now we have all seen the best and the worst, there have been great RPG's and Things that like to call themsleves RPG's but are actually life sucking rip offs.

i wanna know what makes a Good RPG a Great RPG the most recent one i can think of is Oblivion (don't post about me missing the fact about Fallout 3) i liked Oblivion because as soon as escaped from the sewers (or jail) i just left my jaw hanging. to me a Great RPG is one that makes you feel part of another world not a different version of reality (thats why i didn't say Fallout 3) i remeber in past RPG's being very time consuming and almost not worth playing because they simply don't let do what you shouldbe doing.

anyway whats your veiws on a Good RPG?

I would most definatly say Fallout 3 puts you in another world, its just that the other world is techncially earth, in name and geographical structure anyways.

Anyways a good RPG for me has to be one of two things. It either has to be a playable book with lost of customizable abilities and gear or it has to be an attempt at emulating a tabletop game. I don't count Never winter nights in this because I think they screwed some things up but overall I think that if a game feels immersive and captivating like a tabletop and has complex rules to toy around with like a tabletop its worthy of praise. Alternatively if a game feels like a book that I don't want to put down mixed with mechanics I can toy with and customize, well, thats again something I adore. Just one girls opinion though.

If an RPG is immersive enough to start blurring the lines between reality and the game, it is a good RPG.

Sounds very arbitrary to me.

This, but add great story. Story is crazy important to me. If I don't care about the characters, I don't care too much about the game.

I'm a huge fan of the Baldur's Gate series for that very reason. Who couldn't love Minsc and Boo? Or Edwin? or Khaleid? Or Imoen? or Xzar?

Good Story
Immersive
More than 5 voice actors (ties into immersive)
Good combat system
Good landscapes (no copy-paste bullcrap again)
An actual difficulty curve
Character Development (Kingdom Hearts, I'm talking to you)
And Nobuo Uematsu making the game music for ALL RPGs. (This one, not so much)

To me a good RPG is all about story and characters. Even dynamics between a character and an animal is important as it adds to the experience. Currently one of my favorite RPGs (and its a JRPG before anyone asks) is Enchant Arm. So in the game the main character has a dog. Now like every pet he really cares about this. The game takes this dynamic and uses it to push the story line when

The bad guy turns the dog into a three-headed Ceberus guard dog
I personally think this is a great way to use the dynamics between characters. You don't need to feel like you're in the game to me. I take RPGs partially for the movie, the spectacle. Immersion is important but I like story to be honest.

I'm playing through number 2 again now (well not this moment, but you know what I mean) and thoroughly enjoying it. Male half-elf chaotic neutral sorcerer, Aerie, Jaheira, Minsc, Boo, Yoshimo and Korgan. Gonna trade out Korgan for a Paladin as soon as I finish his quest, I've managed to grab a Carsomyr and I kinda want to put it to use.

A good RPG involves pen, paper, dice, a few books, and a DM that knows what s/he's doing.

Oh man you're speaking my language. I BUTCHERED that game with an undead hunter paladin. I actually have the 'Complete' MOD which let's you use the BG:2 engine (And all it's extra perks!) and play through the entire series (Expansions and all) in one go! Same Character, no game switching, BG:2 abilities in BG 1, higher resolution in BG 1, Oh man...I love that freaking series.

Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 (plus expansions) are easily my favourite RPGs of all time.

GO FOR THE EYES BOO!!!
If only my laptop wasn't broken... I'd seriously put down L4D, CoD4, and Fallout 3 tonight and just Baldur's Gate my way to bliss.

*sigh*

It's good to know that I'm not the only die-hard fan.

Enh, I don't really think any of those things are necessary for a good tabletop RPG.

Sometimes helpful, but that's different from "necessary."

While I'll give you that a lack of paper, pencil, and even dice can make for a systems (Nobilis, if I remember correctly, works on a diceless system revolving around concepts, though I've heard bad reviews for it), have you tried playing with a bad DM/GM/ST/HM/Whatever other two letters you can combine?

Roleplaying with a bad GM sucks.

Roleplaying with no GM works just fine, though.

Most of the games I like most do have a distinct GM role, but it's often watered down a bit compared to a traditional GM: more like the "bass player" than the nexus of authority.

HAY! don't knock the bass player... hehe

Seriously though with the GMs we have around here I can't imagine the game being as fun if they did not have the absolute authority. Things would not be so crazy
