She whispers something in my ear the message is unclear she motions outside
I trail her closely from behind she tries hard not to cry She shakes underneath the pouring rain
"I can't compete with all your damn ideas, this isn't working out for you and me.
The truth is I'm too tired of playing pretend.
This is goodbye this is the end"

Last night by Motion City Soundtrack.
It always just makes me sad on the inside.

I have far too many, music has a very profound effect on me emotionally at any time, still 3 that come to mind right now:

1)

"I've been ashamed
I've been put down
Head in my hands
My life on the ground

Left heaven to save
Liars and thieves
Sinners like me
Your blood sets us free

Who am I
That You would remember me?"

2)

"It hasn't always been this way
I remember brighter days
Before the dark ones came
Stole my mind
And wrapped my souls in chains

Now I live among the dead
Fighting voices in my head
Hoping someone hears me crying in the night
And carries me away

Set me free of these chains holding me
Is anybody out there hearing me?
Set me free"

These first 2 because they make me realise just how small and insignificant I am in the grand scheme of things

and then 3)

"I am Vindicated
I am selfish
I am wrong
I am right
I swear I'm right
I swear I knew it all along

And I am flawed
But I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself"

Its both sad because its very close to how I see myself, flawed, but at the same time it gives me hope, I can get past my flaws, see the positives and become a better man because of it.

"I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello." From Helloy Goodbye by the Beatles.
I'm not sure why. I guess it just speaks to the optimist in me.

Wait... If you have no idea what she's singing about, then it's not the lyrics which are making you sad, right? It's just the melody.

Stop Swimming by Porcupine Tree

'I know that the lift can be painfully slow,
So I think that I'll leave by the window'

Dunno what it is about that lyric but I just get a but there is something about it that really gets me.

All of Love Ire & Song by Frank Turner, I can't single out just one line. The man is a genius when it comes to lyrics.
Yes. Just yes. In fact, this almost makes me want to change my choice to the lyrics from the song, Love, Ire and Song which is perhaps the most inspirational song ever... When the revolution comes....

You don't have to understand what someone's singing to get the full effect. It's not just what she sings, it's how she sings it. It's so mournful and sorrowful, it's hard not to get all depressed.
Also if you have an issue with my post, then maybe the bigger issue is with the actual thread, since it's never just what they sing that makes you sad. The backing music gives the lyrics grounding and power that the lyrics usually couldn't achieve on their own.

"And while you're dying, I'll be Still Alive"

Umm... No reason for this. Now, please assume the Party Escort Position

OT: After some hard thinking, I came upon the decision of a part of "Illusion" by VNV Nation

"The world is just illusion,
Always trying to change you"

What matters is that it is the lyrics, not the music. You should be able to read the lyrics and get the same feeling you get when listening to the song.
It's not that I don't totally agree with you. Both are important when it comes to music. I like the way someone once said that a song is like being in love; the music is the physical interaction: the sex, but the lyrics are everything else: that which speaks to the heart.
All I'm saying is, is that this thread is about one of those two things. And I like that. It gives people on the forums a chance to really talk about whatever the message of a song makes them feel.
But might I suggest that you make a separate thread, if "the bigger issue" is what you feel should be addressed?

The entirety of "Tiny Vessels" by Death Cab for Cutie. The first time I listened to the song, I was reluctantly in a relationship that just wasn't working out. I didn't care about her at all, but I couldn't let her know that, I just couldn't break it off. It was one of the most difficult times of my life. This didn't make it any easier.

This is the moment that you know
That you told her that you loved her but you don't.
You touch her skin and then you think
That she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.
Yeah, she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.

I spent two weeks in Silverlake
The California sun cascading down my face
There was a girl with light brown streaks
And she was beautiful but she didn't mean a thing to me.
Yeah she was beautiful but she didn't mean a thing to me.

Wanted to believe in all the words that i was speaking
As we moved together in the dark
And all the friends that i was telling
And all the playful misspellings
And every bite i gave you left a mark

Tiny vessels oozed into your neck
And formed the bruises
That you said you didn't want to fade
But they did and so did i that day

All i see are dark grey clouds
In the distance moving closer with every hour
So when you ask "was something wrong?"
That i think "you're damn right there is but we can't talk about it now.
No, we can't talk about it now."

So one last touch and then you'll go
And we'll pretend that it meant something so much more
But it was vile, and it was cheap
And you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me
Yeah you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me

"I am just a worthless liar.
I am just an imbecile.
I will only complicate you.
Trust in me and fall as well.
I will find a center in you.
I will chew it up and leave,
I will work to elevate you
just enough to bring you down."

Sober - Tool

Gets me every time.
And one that doesn't exactly hit me in the guts but I like it nonetheless is:

"Insane - Am I the only mother fucker with a brain?
I'm hearing voices but all they do is complain,
How many times have you wanted to kill,
Everything and everyone - Say you'll do it but never will!"

Eyeless - Slipknot

Sad songs don't usually get to me, especially piano-heavy ones, but this song is the exception.

I just happened to be looking at a very sad pic when I first heard it, made worse by the fact that the song's lyrics actually fit the image quite well. ;_;

Most of the song "Kanashimi no Hate" by Mucc.
I prefer the second half:

At the end of sorrow?

How will I adjust? What if the insects crowd around inside me

Monstrocities that corrupted this town of horrors so long ago

There's no safe place left
He died with a smile on his face

Ah, we know the end of sorrow will be in our desperate struggle for breath

Ah, someday, someday the day will come when our hearts can laugh

Since you're never coming back, if you?re never coming back

Our tears lost their purpose.

Our sorrow will disappear
Someday.

"It's over
You don't need to tell me
I hope you're with someone who makes you
feel safe in your sleep, then tonight
I won't kill myself, trying to stay in your life
I got no distance left to run

When you see me
Please, turn your back and walk away
I don't want to see you
Cos i know the dreams that you keep is where we meet
When your coming down, think of me here
I got no distance left to run

It's over, I knew it would end this way
I hope you're with someone who makes you feel
That this life is alive
And it settles down, stays around
Spends more time with you
I got no distance left to run"

mmm... well, right now i am in a time of my life where all i see are opportunities, but there was a time where one small line made me cry my eyes out, from "Mad World"

"And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
the dreams in which I´m dying are the best I´ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
when people run in circles is a very, very
mad world, mad world"

it just... hit too close to home, i was trapped in a spiral going down, just... falling to nothingness... and those lyrics only reminded me of how i lost control of my life.

but now its all well and good :p

I should probably mention a rather recent one. I'd been procrastinating listening to the new Portal 2 song, for whatever silly reason. Well, when I finally downloaded it, this line struck me as oddly powerful.

"One day they woke me up...so I could live forever."

So cold, and yet so strong. Blew my little mind, it did.

lol Maybe I'm just a sexual being, but I don't get the same feeling from reading the lyrics as I do when hearing the whole song. To me they're just rhyme-y words with absolutely no context without the music.

Here's another sunday morning call
Yer hear yer head-a-banging on the door
Slip your shoes on and then out you crawl
Into a day that couldn't give you more
But what for?
