I don't think the climbing would be fun with modern buildings. Part of the beauty of AC is that roofs are always a quick escape. And a 10+ story building is not a quick climb.
Hmmm. Maybe I was wrong with the word "modern day." To me, The Assassin's Creed could be a little more futuristic in terms of setting considering something like the Animus exists.
Still...In the future, we're likely to continue building taller and taller buildings, as land becomes scarcer.
The Citidel can be seen from all parts of the city..

Perhaps he could use one of those window cleaner's carts to scale up a building. I think the setting should be a time where are no helicopters. because realistically you can't escape thermal vision to well. It'd be a bit like a Hitman/Mirrors edge/Mercenaries all mixed in.

I saw someone say a WW2 setting somewhere. That'd be nice. But perhaps it'll be placed a different way to velvet assassin. Darn, it's all been done before.

But hey. If it works, use it.

think about if they used the insides of buildings as well, though, then in could look something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GpOroM0g80
Wow. Show Ubisoft this clip. I want a free-running game that awesome.

Set it in the late Victorian era. Then you can take historical liberties again, but in an awesome Steampunk manner.

I really want to play ACII..6 more months...

Asassin's Creed is what it is because it was somewhat original in it's own way. Why would you want to make it in a modern time..WITH GUNS?? Do we not have enough shooter games? Did you not play Hitman to satisfy your needs?
Better yet, they could make the Animus see into the future, so we could play with Desmond's future relative, the space marine. That would be awesome /sarcasm

You have the Crusades, and then the Rennasiance

My bet is they'll pick another pivotal part of world history

American Revolution, French Revolution or...as I really, personally hope: the English Civil War

Damn that would be incredible

Or...wait!

Better yet!: The Seven Years War. It's pratically the first World War (when you consider the world was basically Europe back then in terms of importance and power)

The 7 year War assassain could travel between the cities in Paris, Berlin, London etc! Could be pretty cool

It seemed to me that it is going to have to be in Desmond's time. No more being permanently in the past- I think.

Do any of you guys watch LOST? Cos' I imagine Assassin's Creed III will be like some of the episodes centered around the character Desmond (hilariously) and around season 3 and 4 he begins inadvertently jumping around between his past and the present, trying to keep some frame of reference to keep him from losing his sanity.

I would like to see a game like this focusing more on having little control in when you slip into Altair, Ezio, another ancestor... or even Desmond himself when he's younger! Overall, that would make the experience perfect for me- and just that certain je ne sais qoui that keeps me from being totally immersed in the game

I wouldn't like it to be honest. I think as soon as you give the assassin guns, you lose sight of the game. It might be a cool game, but I wouldn't want it to be an Assassin's Creed. Perhaps its own standalone title.

Assassins creed 3 IN ANTARCTICA!
How about setting it in Europe less guns or it could be in the cold war on either side of the iron curtain. Trying to get people past the Berlin wall would be fun.
The Cold War does sound like a fairly nice setting for the next game. Less guns, less blood, but the deception and art of sabotage during those times were heavy.
You could poison someone and as they stumble towards the wall they'd get killed by the landmine for maximum gut splattering tastyness.

I wonder if a subliminal messaging device would be allowed by the assassins morals in that time period.

Depends what part of the world he's going to be in, Skyscrapers will be fucking hard to climb. I suspect he will pull his hood up since he's always wearing his hoodie.

After all the training with Ezio, and all of Leonardo's inventions with the hidden blade, I imagine Desmond having modern twin hidden blades and hidden guns. I also imagine the two hidden guns combined to become a modern and compact sniper rifle for long-ranged assassinations.

As for his conflict with enemies with guns, I think he stands fairly a chance melding with a large crowd on the cityscape. They could also equip him with a timed stealth camouflage or some sort. His speed in free-running also makes it hard for non-assault-rifle weapons to hit him.

These are all just my imagination concocting up some weird possible dream game in mind, but I think it's possible for a modern day Assassin's Creed to be fun.
Stealth Camo really isn't to plausible.

Bullets go faster than any human or animal.

OT: it can very well be modern as most of the Piece of Eden locations are in remote villages or ancient cities so the buildings will still be scalable, also Desmond may now not travel as a lone assassin as they travel in groups...I predict some sort of Co-op and more ranged weaponry if its Modern they want.

That would be an interesting approach, but I can't help but think the inclusion of weapons like silenced pistols and high-powered sniper rifles would kind of kill the appeal of the game. Getting in close to assassinate your target with a blade is a challenge of patience, stealth and ability to perceive one's surroundings. It makes the kill incredibly satisying and personal when you finally pull it off.

If you were armed with a sniper rifle, it could be as simple as finding a secluded rooftop, taking your shot and moving on. This isn't to say it wouldn't be challenging to do this in a way that doesn't draw much attention... But to me, it doesn't hold a candle to having to get as close as you need to be to kill with a knife.

I think we can all agree it would be fun. However, I think we can all also agree that it probably won't happen in Ass Creed 3.

Ass Creed 3 has already been set up to take place in the past again, and I have heard alot of rumors about WWII being the setting.

Though, the least they could do is mix in a little present time gameplay with the past. Something like Desmond doing other things outside the Animus.
You know, I'm betting that the animus won't be revisitng in Assassin's Creed 3, I think he will be a lucky individual and be able to control visiting his ancestors. Thus providing two times of playability. The past, and the present, your idea seems like it would fit well with this theory

Your theory makes sense, considering that Desmond

did pay a little visit to Altair in his dreams that time. Plus, all that stuff from the Animus bleeding over into his reality would allow him to see ancestor's memories.

Too bad you aren't a gameplay designer at Ubisoft. I highly doubt they'll be that creative with it.

Honestly I think an Assassins Creed set in the modern day will only work if it's set half and half with another "period piece" setting.

Now, I havn't finished Assassins Creed 2 yet, so I may not know all the facts. But, from what I've got so far, I'm guessing Desmond will no longer need the animus to access his ancestors memorys. He could just fall asleep and find himself as a chick in nazi germany or a cave man with duel hidden clubs or whatever it is.

That's the biggest pull for me with Assassins Creed appart from the parkour, the fact that it's set in a time and place I don't know and havn't explored. I can get modern day from other games.

Assassin's Creed 3: Vice City. I will so run a ***** over in my maserati just for the kicks of it. I'd run over kittens too if it meant I didn't have to do the platform puzzles like the assassins tombs had.
I liked the tombs. Seemed like a nice change of pace after running into a place and stabing someone.

I could care less about the setting, unless they fix the characters faces. Have you seen their faces in ACII? They're horrible. Yahtzee's comparison with lucy and a fish aren't that far appart.
