First step: Stop drinking until you've reached the appropriate age.

Second step: Stop letting your friends pressure you into do (illegal) things you don't like.

Here are the best tips I can offer if you really want to be a beer drinker:

a) Drink it in large gulps rather than sips. Sounds counter-intuitive if you don't like it, but it actually makes it much more bearable (and you look more manly drinking it that way) as you consume more beer with less of it interacting with your taste buds.

b) Drink specific beers that you find "better" than others. Even if they still suck, find a brand and start there. For me, it was a local pale ale that I found easiest to drink. Once I became accustomed to that, I moved on to other similar beers. You have to work your way up. (A lot of people find Guinness one of the better beers, though be warned - it is much more filling than most, so don't plan on drinking a lot of it.)

c) Drink wussy beer. Anything that is watery or "light" (like Bud, Molson, Coors, etc.) is easier to consume in large doses than heavier, fuller beers. So, if you're starting out, avoid the majority of European beers for now.

d) Drink a lot of it. I don't mean over-indulge, and certainly don't adopt the tendencies of an alcoholic. Just remember that beer is an acquired taste. The more you drink, the more you get used to it. At the end of the day, have a beer while you watch TV. Partake of a pitcher with friends at the bar. After awhile (and you'll be surprised by how little time it takes if you stick to it) you'll be so used to it you'll be drinking Dos Equis across from the most interesting man in the world! (Well, maybe not. But at least you can look manly instead of gagging on the bubbly.)

EDIT: Also, as I've noticed now reading the above comments, DON'T DRINK UNTIL YOU ARE OF AGE. Seriously, alcohol is not that interesting. The only real reason for it is to give you an excuse to go and hang out in pubs. Until you can do that, alcohol is not worth your time or, more importantly, your money.

I'll leave my post here for anyone else who is the legal drinking age and is interested in cresting the beer hill.

I just man through it >.<

But sereously I hate the taste but I don't like wasting something given to me so I grit my teeth and do the polite thing.

To contrast, I unlike most of my friends have a disposition for hard liqueur where I can drink it straight unfazed and really enjoy it.

Might come from not being able to do a proper shot...

Three points:

-It is an acquired taste, you won't like it at first.
-There are hundreds of different varieties and flavors of beer, if you don't like one, branch out and try something different. Sam Adams alone has over a dozen varieties.
-If all else fails, you don't have to drink it. I drink beer from time to time but when I first started drinking at parties it was Wine or Liquor, not beer.

Why try and get used to something you don't like? By all means try new brews if you want to, but you don't have to adjust.

So, like many not-manly men, I'm cursed with the inability to get past the taste of beer. I've never made it past half a bottle on my own. I'm normally able to take a good first drink, but after that the taste limits me to just sips at a time. Between me and friends, we normally just have beer.
Any suggestion on how to get past the taste, or condition myself to like.
Bah. Never mind that gibberish about not drinking beer. If a rule doesn't make sense why should it be followed? A persons maturity should be judged through the individual, not the age. Just don't get caught and don't be a moron. Besides, life is short. Back when I was a spineless 16 year old I regret never getting into anything over these laws that simply didn't add up. If an intoxicated somebody is going to fuck up your day because he decided to get behind the wheel five beers too much he'll still do it whether he's 16 or in his seventies. Reponsibility is far more important then avoidance.

Silly me, I forgot there was a thead here! Well, on drinking I don't have a whole lot to say. The most advice I got for you is that maybe that brand (or maybe beer in general) just isn't your thing. I don't want to be the one to enforce any bad habits on you but I guess if you're really so keen on drinking something that's basically vegetable/ fruit piss then I guess you can always just try experimenting with liquors if you're willing to spend loads of money just to see what liquors are your kind of thing if any of them even are.

Rum costs a ***** but in my own opinion it mixes good with drinks. Just make sure that someone else buys the rum if you're going to try your first taste of it. Otherwise you just spent quite a bit over just a bottle.

But yes, all in all responsibility is what truly matters, not what age you are. Just always be aware that you'll make your self look like a moron if you drink too much, you'll have a terrible hangover after you drink too much, and if you cross the line too far you might just end up choking on your own vomit like two people I knew.

If you don't like it don't force yourself. Find something else to drink, there's plenty to choose from!

Personally I love a good pint of bitter, but it's not to everybody's taste.

I am included in those people that hate beer. If you go to a bar jack and coke and you don't have to feel any less mainly. Jack and coke is still mainly.

Its nothing to worry about, I'll admit to drinking "*****" beer as women and men call it but that doesn't stop you from being less mainly. Just get over the stigma.

Find a good brand or at least one you hate less, contrary to popular belief beer does actually taste different. If it's a pale lager or pilsner like most beers drink it as cold as possible.

Ya, I hate beer also, I would suggest cider, red apple, pear, or raspberry are some of the good ones, IMO at least.

Simple: don't drink beer. I know this seems unhelpful, bu really, you shouldn't have to drink what you don't like - it's not like beer is actually a necessity of life.

Plus, I don't know what you mean by 'not manly'. Speaking as a woman, I don't find a man any less manly for not liking beer - in fact, a guy can like pink drinks in cocktail glasses if he's man enough to tell the naysayers to bugger off and let him enjoy a drink he happens to actually like the taste of.

I thought the same way when all that was readily available to me was mass-market stuff like Bud and Coors (even some slightly more obscure brands like Dos Eqquis and the like). Then I came to realize: all popular beer (the brands that everyone in the world can name) is rat piss. Seeketh out the lesser known brewers. My roommate works at the largest liquor store in Jersey, so I've been introduced to many, many new brands I never new existed, some of which are quite good!

A few recent notables are Arrogant Bastard Ale (I tried that because of the name alone) and New Holland Dragon's Milk. The latter is particularly tasty (probably the best beer I've ever had), but it gets to me rather quickly. One 22oz. bottle and I'm done for the night.

Thanks for being cool. All the people telling me to wait untill I can legally was starting to get annoying.
I'm always responsible with that kind of stuff, I never over do it, I'm in a private residence, and I have friends that I trust in case anything does happen (kind of overkill, though). It's not like I'm microwaving my brain.
I actually have found Blue Moon to be easier then others. I almost through up after trying to down a whole glass of red wine fast. I mixed wine with sparkling apple cider and that wasn't too bad.
And if all else fails, I know someone who made three gallons of mead.

Or, possibly, stop drinking it until you're old enough. According to your profile, you're only sixteen.
Oh man, I didn't even read the above posts until after I already posted. Yea man, if you're only freaking 16, don't even bother. Drinking really isn't even that big of a deal. I know to you and everyone at your school they think it's this big great thing, and it's "cool and edgy" because they do it. But it's NOT worth it if you're underage, and even if you weren't, it goes without saying that you need to be smart about it. I've seen several people I know totally fuck their lives up because they frequently drank underage, and are now stuck with all kinds of problems related to it.
Why preach to people on the internet its not like it matters anyway. People have the right to do things like drink. Telling sombody off for underage drinking, trying to influence sombody you don't know to stop them from choosing something just because you don't agree with it. I think lots of things are wrong like smoking pot or snorting coke but honestly if I saw someone doing it I wouldnt stop them or tell them they are wrong. People shouldnt try and tell other people whats best for them it creates all kinds of problems. Can you honestly say you know whats best for someone more than they do if so you are either god or a facist and I'm pretty sure you aren't god

My advice is to research beer and appreciate it. Look at its history, and look at the nutrients, and all the heritage it has. Drink respectable beers and try to avoid the watered-down college party beers. Try malt liquor too. And change it up, it might not seem like it to one who isn't a big fan of beer, but every beer has a different taste. You're bound to find one you like, I promise :) try Rolling Rock if you haven't. It's a very pale beer so a lot of people think it's wimpy, but the flavor is great. Try drinking everything at different temperatures too. I like my beer better at room-temp, but a lot of my friends drink it when it's almost frozen. Expand to wine also. Lots and lots of good flavors there!

Hey, when I was your age, I was making homebrew. And mead rocks. Like the other posters said, the diff between good beer and budcoorsmiller is lightyears in length. BTW, to the poster who mentioned Arrogant Bastard, that's my hometown's brew. Sing it, brother.

Sorry, I suppose I should be all "responsible adult" but frack it. Nothing wrong with a couple of beers, especially when your metabolism still won't add it to your belt size. Just don't drink and drive, and just have a few (like three or four tops). Hangovers are such a waste.

I used to have that problem, but one day it kind of just snapped. I now love the taste of beer. I now drink it because I legitimately like the taste.

If that doesn't work for you and you are just in it for the buzz, just try some hard liquor.

My advice is Limonchello. Barely taste the alcohol.
