Hey Hey
I used to play WoW briefly when it first came out. I'd say for about 4-5 months. I played a hunter up to lvl. 35 or so and then I finally quit due to the repetitive nature of the game and got bored. I am sort of dying for a game to play right now though and I was wondering if with all the patches and expansions if the game is any better nowadays.
The only MMO I ever played for prolonged period and enjoyed was City of Heroes but I've played it too much so even the new content is basically the same stuff I've done before but reskinned. Any current players of WoW any idea if its any good now? I am not big on huge groups and raids and all the stuff you'd typically think you'd want to play WoW for. I tend to just be all about small groups or soloing and I only care about having fun not min/maxing.

It's a bit more energetic and flashy with some pretty jazzy new content. I stopped playing a bit ago but I'd imagine a new player could have a lot of fun with it, especially if they disliked the repetitive nature of the grinding the original game had.

Although if you really dislike repetitive game play, I doubt the game will keep you interested in it for very long. The end game is very grind heavy (Not as much as it used to, but it's still a decent grind).

In general, I'd say its a good game, but it really relies on meeting friends in game to really prolong the experience.

I only really stopped playing because my account was hacked several times and I was rather bored of the end game.

Well... they made the leveling pretty damn easy, there are almost no group quests nowadays, most of the quests, where you have to kill an elite, you get some tool, either boosting you or diminishing the power of that particular mob. I can't really tell you whether it's "better" or "worse", because that's really a matter of opinion. I still like it, but that's doesn't really tell you much, since I tastes may vary. Most of my time in the game now is either spent raiding or doing arena with a couple of guildmates, but then again, I've played the game for something like 6½ years now, so I've experienced quite a lot of what the game has to offer.

What I can say though, is give the free-to-level-20 trial a go and see whether you like it. It's with the new leveling experience, introduced in Cataclysm, so I'd say it'll give you pretty good idea of what you're getting into, should you decide to start again. The memories and nostalgia about "the good old days" will always be there, when I first started I had one hell of a time experiencing the game, grindy as it was, but I do have enough sense to acknowledge the leveling experience is better made now, much more user-friendly and really great at telling you where to go next and such on. But as I said, give the trial a chance, before anything else.

If you're planning on a new character, I recommend it. A lot of the starting part's been updated, so now the stuff you do have purpose. Later on, as long as you focus on having fun, and stay away from "pros" during raids, heroics and such, you'll be fine. That still hasn't changed, you WILL repeatedly be called a noob or worse, no matter how good you are.

It can still be a grind, but it's more varied now, at least to me. Just try to find a friend to play with, and it'll be much less boring, if there is anything you HAVE to do.

If you haven't played since before the expansions, then hell yes, you should give it a try. Even if it still doesn't turn out to be your thing, there's been a lot of change and it's worth checking out.

You say you like soloing and small groups. Well, there's still not too much to do in the way of solo questing once you hit max level (although there's more than in vanilla WoW), the actual levelling up is best done through solo questing now. It may be a little too easy, but questing is probably the fastest way to level and Cataclysm rejigged most of the quests so that a lot of zones have an overriding storyline you progress through, which makes things much less grindy.

you can play to lvl 20 for free. try it out, I guess
There is this. Free trials are now no longer time based, but level based. They take you from 1-20 and then ask if you'd like to upgrade (or, if you already have an account, you can leave it sat there and go back to your original if you want to).

So if you're curious, boot up a trial account, play through it a bit and see whether or not it's for you.

Thanks for the responses. Do I miss out on a lot of content if I just reactivate my normal WoW account with no expansions? Or do a lot of the improvements carry over? I know most of the expansions tend to revolve around new races/classes or end content.

Without the expansions you'll end up missing Outland, Northrend and the new Cataclysm zones/raids. You won't be able to participate in the current pvp season and you'll also be unable to do arena. You'll still get the new and improved leveling experience though. It's still a bit grindy but nowhere near as before, especially now with the addition of the dungeon finder.

Hunters are also quite shit in Cataclysm. I suggest you re-roll as a Mage or Druid since they're the "end all-be all" classes for pvp at the moment. By re-rolling you'll also be able to experience the entirety of the 1 to 60 leveling content.

EDIT: Honestly though, if you're just looking for a game to burn time with I don't suggest buying the expansions. Level from 1 to 60 first and see if you really want to continue doing so as the experience once hitting level 85 becomes quite stale. I personally started a whole new character, tauren druid, just so I could experience the new content. After reaching level 85 I got bored and started regretting buying Cata.

I believe you still get everything, just not the races or zones. So you won't be able to get passed level 60 or go anywhere other than the two main continents

You lose out on the Blood Elf/Draenei races if you play your normal WoW account with no expansions (these are activated on the trial account), along with the Blood Elf/Draenei starting zones.

However with the update of the 'Old World' with Cataclysm, older starting zones (such as de trolls, mon!) are now 'better' than the Burning Crusade zones.

So at the outset, you don't miss out on anything. All the new old world zones which were accessible with Cataclysm are freely available to everyone.

a bloody panda? for god sake, they had to put it on the horde side as well because know how touchy those horde wankers are. "wah wah wah, were not the bad guys, were jsut misunderstood, were better than you, wah wah wah" shut up horde, i kill yer orcy children and your ugly women aswell!

I would only return if one of the hero classes was a gunslinger
Most of what you said is silly and really not worth responding to, but as one specific note: Troll women are sex.

Dont do it. Play RIFT or something if you're in need of the high fantasy MMO feeling.

Seriously, WoW is like the autotune club music of MMO gaming. Huge and popular, even though everything about it is absolute shit.

I hate those blue skinned horny tooth jamaican bitches. Trolls suck, they dont even get there own city, they just steal from the orcs, I HATE THEM!
You express actual emotional hate for an entirely neutral fictional race?

Seek help sir, it's not safe to be that invested in something.

BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHhhhhhh....
*wipes vomit from mouth* oh god sorry

Anyways, If I HAD to I would honestly pick for horde it would be an ork. I mean at their teenage years they can't be that bad looking....right? >.>

Or a draenei, yea, I'd hit that. They seem like they would be cool with my weirdness, plus I like their accents.

...

Don't f**king judge me. Its better than the garbage Mass Effect races.

I apologize for being off topic.

It hasn't changed. WoW was never about soloing or small group play. If you aren't interested in raiding I would not recommend going back to it. Questing is just a grind to get to raiding, essentially.

I suggest you look elsewhere, or perhaps wait for Guild Wars 2 to come out. That's what I'm doing.
To be honest, I think that's what most of the MMO community is doing. I've heard (I have no figures to back this up) that WoW's subscription service is taking a nose dive of late.

thanks to the fact that you can now play for free to level twenty, i recommend trying it out for yourself. To get a good idea of what the new cata content is like, I recommend trying out the gnome starting zone for alli and the undead starting zone for horde.
