I personally would avoid pokemon altogether. Like most Nintendo products its main audience is child sex abusers.
You know that one new thread about the stupidest things you've ever heard? I think this takes the cake, pie, and quite possibly the ice cream. Wow...
Why? Have you not seen nintendo's products. They seem stuck in a time warp for people seemingly unable to give up being a child. I worry about these people. I certainly won't let my kids around somone's house if Daddy is into Mario.
Yes, I'd much rather let my child around "somone" who plays wholesome games like Grand Theft Auto. How else are they going to learn important life lessons like that you can get your money back if you just kill the hooker after your finished with her. Plus we all know that when Toad tells Mario that Peach is in another castle, Mario reenacts the prison rape scene from American History X. "You wanna act like a Princess? I'mma treat you like a princess!"
ON TOPIC: Pokemon X and Y are fine games. In my opinion, keeping up with all the new pokemon isn't the biggest obstacle to tackle. Until you get into competitive battles, all you really need to know is what type they are so you can wipe them up with a dirty dish rag, and GameFreak has done a fine job across the generations of letting a pokemon's design reflect such traits. See a blue pokemon shaped like a fish with ice around it's mouth? It's probably water/ice. Is it a turtle instead of a fish? Most likely water or water/??? with high defense. See some neutrally colored mammal with no obvious tells as to what the hell it is other than a pokemon version of an animal? Probably normal type. Purple? Poison. Purple and especially mean looking? Poison/Dark. See an evil looking tree called Trevenant? Tree and revenant; Grass and Ghost. Something shaped like a ball? Expect it to blow up.
Of course, out of 700 something odd pokemon, there are exceptions, but the most difficulty you'll have will be trying to keep up with all the new moves and abilities. I've played every generation and I still occasionally catch myself going "He used Flatter? What the hell is Flatter?" But it's still an amazing ride, and I HIGHLY recommend that you pick it up.
