I'm a history teacher, but even I have to admit that I don't know much about her off the top of my head. I remember her being explained to me as basically "Ronald Reagan in a dress" and nothing I've ever heard about her has directly contradicted that. She even kind of looked like a cross dressing Ronald Reagan to me...

Suffice to say that since my opinion of Ronald Reagan is pretty low, she suffers pretty heavily from the mental connection there. If anyone knows any positions she took that weren't as economically callus as Reagan's, I'd be willing to reexamine my image of her.

She sucked, but I don't really see how we could have avoided the Falklands war.

Those sneaky Argentinians...
Actually...we kinda started the war. Thatcher ordered the British Navy to open fire on a civilian Argentinian ship that wasn't anywhere near the fleet. The Argentinians attacking us was a retaliatory gesture. Thatcher wanted a war to distract the British public from the fact she was slowly but surely screwing anybody who wasn't rich and white, I.E., Conservative. :/

OT: I hate Thatcher and Meryl Streep, so this movie will be on my LA LA LA THIS DOESN'T EXIST list from now on, methinks.
Which conspiracy theorist came up with that one? It's very well known that the Argentinians want the Falklands, hell some politicians running for office still bloody talk about reclaiming them.

I googled her just now and I have some bad impressions of her because of the deregulation she did, but some people on this thread think that she was either bad or decent, so I have to say no opinion.

in all truth the Falklands war to both sides was an easy way to calm political discord, for the British and the Argentinians

PS dosent mater who started it, it would have happened sooner or later

I'm citing knowledge gained from reading two books on the subject, watching a documentary written by Andrew Marr, and having a father who lived through the war who also has extensive qualifications in modern British history.

You're citing from Wikipedia.

"Plans have begun for Margaret Thatcher's state funeral. It'll be the first time ever the 21 gun salute is fired into the coffin."
That was Frankie Boyle, I do believe. He also said that they could just save money on the state funeral by giving each scottish person a spade and they'll dig her a grave so deep they can hand her over to the devil themselves.

English: Well I suppose you can say she and Mr. Blair both got things done. They were just the wrong things.

And yes the film does portray her in a positive/sympathetic light.

On an interesting note, be aware that workers still have very little legal protection. Even now in the UK we have no right to strike in national law, only immunity from legal action if the strike is approved by a union that the employer recognises and which has jumped through a dozen difficult procedural hoops.

E.g. you must inform the employer of the result of your ballot immediately ("as soon as reasonably possible"), and will fail if the vote takes place on Friday and you tell them on Monday morning (as in a famous case that happened). Labour law always gives you plenty to get worked up about.

I've read about her, mostly schoolrelated. Gotta say, even though Britain had problems when she got in office she does sound like the biggest hag in modern british history.
Your avatar is stupid.

And now to add value to this post other than an unfunny joke:

I'm actually rather shocked about the number of people here who don't know much or anything about her.
I may be from the nation she somehow clawed her way to the top of, but I was under the impression that she was a little better known than this globally,

Of course we here in NL know Tatcher.
She was truely Iron, and that made my massive worries about Russia nuking the crap out of me a little less.

I don't actually remember the whole armed conflict, but I know of the Falklands...
Can't really say anything about it, tho.

I heard of her first from the movie "Billy Elliot". But no, I'm probably not old enough to know her well enough to have an opinion. Anyone who sends their people out to war though, is a horrible person by definition.
Except that war is often necessary to overthrow evil dictators and bring freedom to enslaved people. Do you feel that the allies were horrible people for choosing to fight Hitler?

Speaking of the Falklands war, I always thought the conflict was interesting for one reason: The Argentine air force had exocet missiles that could really mess up a ship if it hit, but it had to be fired from within line of sight as opposed to over the horizon, and since the Argentines needed to avoid British radar before launching, they'd have to fly very close to the water before they launch, taking the British by surprise. HOWEVER, the Brits would then send Harrier jets back at the Argentines, which, being subsonic, the Argentines could outrun if they used their afterburners. The problem being, the British ships were parked so far off shore that if the Argentines used their afterburners, they wouldn't have enough fuel to make it home.

Moral of the story: The British could have absolutely trounced the Argentine air force if they'd just had two or three AWAKS to watch for the Argentine jets before they got within line of sight of a Royal Navy ship. The Argentine air force could have absolutely trounced the Royal Navy if they'd just had two or three mid-air refueling planes to get their jets home after running away.
