A question for non British people

I remember seeing her on the TV when I was little, but otherwise didn't hear much about her while growing up.

I never really understood the Falklands War. We weren't taught much about it, but it seems odd to me that a country like Argentina would challenge Britain. That just seems like a bad idea. It also seems logically unreasonable to want islands so far away from your country. Unless there's a vast wealth of resources that you can't live without, why bother?

To be fair, Argentina started that war. Okay the Falklands are far away from Britain, but they (and their people) fall under the protection of The Crown. Argentina invaded, we kicked them out. Simple.

There's no 'could have avoided here'. Being nice only works if the other people want it to.

She closed down mines because they weren't making money right? It seems to me it had to be done. It might have been good for the country as a whole. We may never know. I know to little about the falklands war to form an educated opinion.

Not an expert on her or anything. I wasn't alive at the time. I just remember a bit from school. There were very mixed oppinions on her in class. Our resident commies hated her.

She must have done something right to get re-elected twice (or was it thrice?). I get the impression the bad deisions were made towards the end. The war wasn't really that bad as far as wars go. In fact it was positively gentlemanly. Agreeing not to attack each other's countries and play it out across the sea and the Falklands.

Edit: Should say I'm British/Scottish so it's not like the question was aimed at me.

Well my Da was in the TA in Northern Ireland while she was in power, and he doesn't stop praising her. He keeps saying stuff like she's the sort of leader Ireland needed. From other opinions I've gathered, I think I would emigrate as quick as I could(mind you I'll probably be doing that anyway)if someone like her got into power here.

One of the things that cracks me up the most about Jimmi Carr is when he came to New York to do Comedy Central Presents he talked very slow for the American audience. It's like an added joke for everyone who was paying attention.

I'm Canadian and have indeed heard of Thatcher. I like her because as I far as I know she was against the socialism of Britain at the time and did a great deal to end it.

Also she stomped on Argentina which was awesome.

Wow. "Stomped on Socialism" is not a good thing. She put half the country out of work and fucked the economy for anyone not earning well above the national average.

She is the reason people hate conservatives.
It's right wingers like her who want to cut education funding (fucking the poor) removing the NHS - free healthcare (fucking the poor) jacking up Uni fees (fucking the poor) removing benefits/jobseeker's allowance (fucking the unemployed) while at the same time firing half of the country's manual workforce and other lower-income jobs (fucking the poor).

That's not the same I'm afraid. Unlike America, Britain isn't completely run by big oil or other corporations.

However, the same could be said for Hitler, what I'm not sure is exactly a positive point...Not that I want to be seen comparing her to Hitler, just that in governing not doing things is sometimes a large part of the job too.

OT: She was before my time, but from what I hear she was just about Satan with a vagina sitting on a throne of milk bottles snatched from the cold, dead hands of orphans who starved after their only source of income (mines) were closed.
I'm sure she was doing what she thought was best for the country, but she did some really damn terrible things along the way.

They knew of no oil around the Falklands at the time, or if they did it was not economical to extract (at the time) and certainly not why there was war.

It wasn't about resources. It was about not letting the people on the island who wanted to remain British be invaded by a forgein nation, who at the time had a Military dictatorship and a bad human rights record, and who were doing it to prop up support. Thatcher did use it to prop up her support aswell, but that wasn't the reason for going to war. It was to protect the freedoms of the islanders.
