Nothing for Australia day itself. Its a public holiday, but I'm not going to dedicate it to a country that's really nothing special to me. I'm spending the morning sleeping till one of my friends comes down, then we're heading out to Ballarat in the afternoon for another friend's party which goes from 5 till 9 the next morning before heading back home Monday, dropping her off at her house then going to my Nanna's 70th birthday Lunch.
Hectic day or two for me, but it would be regardless of whether it was Australia day or not. The day itself really isn't anything special.

I get that many Aboriginal people are against Australia day because it was the day that we colonized and tried to genetically erase them, but that was in the past.
Hahahaha that made me laugh. Sure we committed genocide on them, but let's just forget about that and chill! Riiiiight.

Usually just spend it out of the heat, try and hang with friends. Whatever, I don't really think much of Australia Day.

we didn't do a fucking thing. White people did bad shit in the past, but I have done no such thing and am tired of being expected to feel guilty over it. I was born here, and as such am Australian, the aboriginal people were born here and as such are Australian, the Lebanese community, Australian, the Vietnamese community, Australian. Anyone born here or holding citizenship, Australian. We are all Australian and we are all in this world together, so can we please stop with the 'your ancestor fucked over my ancestor' bullshit.

I'm not at all proud to be Australian, so I dunno. Perhaps I'll try to wash the Australia taste out of my mouth with some Vienna schnitzel or something. Most places in the world have some problems with racism and general sensitivity towards minorities, but Australia is very special in that we openly celebrate the disempowerment of the native culture we trod upon -- and, as usual, there'll be the call for minorities to get out of "our" country.

So I guess I don't like to think of myself as "Australian", but in terms of my individual heritages. I've never been much at ease with the culture of this place.

I'll start by not remembering what day it is, most likely- Probably end up hearing about it from the loons making noise outside.

Then I'll turn the air conditioning up and play Pokemon, and pretend I'm in Alaska.

I might have a BBQ or go to the movies and see Django, won't really be doing much until the T20 match starts and then I'll be cheering our cricketers on.

It's not as though history consists of isolated events that no longer affect us. Aboriginal people continue to suffer from the wrongs that were committed in the past. If I slaughtered your grandparents and took all your stuff, such that you were forced to live in destitution and poverty while I reaped all the benefits, would you be so quick to let the past be the past?

I am back in japan now, but back in the days when i was in Perth, we had a house over looking the Swan river, so we always had a huge pool BBQ party. Every year the hot tub ends up smelling like beer, and all the water guns end up being full of white wine.
Now i am freezing my butt off in snowy tokyo!!

... Realistically? Drink and get into fights. I'll probably be drinking with the same people I'll be fighting, and fighting the folks I usually drink with.

As much as I dislike Australia (Shut up, don't tell me to 'gtfo' unless you're willing to pay for my ticket and temporary living accommodation), I make a surprisingly good Aussie.
I'm just not racist to everything that isn't 'white Aussie'. The most racist my family gets is 'dirty lebs till proven otherwise'.

Yea, Turk/Syrian + German. Grew up in middle eastern communities, Blacktown... spent some time with the Italians and Russians in the eastern suburbs.
You know the 2 races/cultures that all those places dislike? Aussies and the Lebanese.

Homework. Hours and hours of oh so joyful homework. Why do I never listen when people tell me not to leave it to the last minute? Even now I am on the Escapist instead of all the homework I still have to do by Wednesday.

Probably just either have a Barbie or head down to the beach to relax, luckily I'm in the 10% of Australia where there aren't bogans around in big numbers just loads and loads of bloody tourists

You mean Invasion day? Yeah, I probably won't be doing anything special. Most places celebrate their independence while we're here celebrating colonialism. Makes you proud to be Australian.
I'm planning on burning a flag and posting it on facebook to make bogans rage.

Responsible trolling.

My family was driven out of both of our nations of origin. Their properties were burned/seized, their family killed and they fled across the planet to Australia. I do not hold that against the nations that conducted those acts today, because sins of the father is a bullshit doctrine.

DO we need to do more for the aboriginal community? Fuck oath we do.
Is it a moral failing of this nation that conditions in the settlements are fucking terrible? Of course it is.
But if you try and dress it up in a sins of the father context, you are wrong.

People in AUSTRALIA get arsey about immigrants?

Oh the delicious irony.

Thank you Aussies, for making me one very amused pom.
You're still my favourite penal colony.
Woo! We beat the US!

And yeah, lots of people hate immigrants. Even those whose living ancestors are immigrants.

Hell, some people want Indigenous Australians to go back to whatever country they came from.

It's just a total coincidence that the life expectancy of Indigenous Australians is some 20 years less than the average then?

Do not confuse our sins with the sins of our fathers. If people want to talk about the shit that goes on in the settlements I will be right fucking on board. I spent enough time living in the territory to know that we need to do more, just do not dress it up as inherited guilt for having been born British descendent in Australia.
