you have all heard the warnings, you've seen the labels and you all know the potential fatal risks of smoking.

So why do you continue?

I will go with the time honoured answer that non-smokers refuse to accept: I enjoy it.

Probably for the same reason people continue eating fattty foods and drinking soda: Because they're racist.

Inb4 it relieves stress.

Smoking doesn't relieve stress, it relieves the withdrawal symptoms of not smoking.

Ahh, the devil nicotine. That rush as you breath her in and the smoke slaps the back of your throat like a leather paddle to be held in your lungs like vaporised excitement. That instant between breaths of peace and clarity as it enters your blood before the wonderful catharsis of the exhalation. And you stand basking in the afterglow as the smoke forms whimsical patterns in the moonlight, as if a child was playing with clouds.

Plus if I didn't smoke I might end up living forever.

That's a very strange way to phrase it.

Eating doesn't relieve hunger, it relieves the withdrawal symptoms of not eating.

not true. at least at the start anyway.

Was working on my senior thesis last semester, ended at my wits end and turns to cigs in lieu of another smokable substance that may or may not be against Escapist TOS to say.

smoking did provide a very temporary nicotine high that was very very nice when I needed it.

But it's really a poor drug. that feeling doesn't last and then your chain smoking a whole pack just to get it back.

suffice to say, I've since quit it was remarkably easy.

False equivalence.

Sure, to begin with :D

But the more an individual smokes, the less it is about fighting stress, and the more it is about preventing withdrawal.

So yea, fail joke on your part....

Saying false equivalence doesn't make it a false equivalence. You have to explain why it is a false equivalence.

How about the fact we don't have a choice in the matter?

I thought that was blindingly obvious, but hey ho, I forget, this is the internet.

What do you enjoy about it? The smell? The smoke going into your lungs? That feeling of suffocation that makes you lightheaded?

My apologies if my allergies, family history of asthma, and sensitive lungs cause you to classify me as "some lame anti-tobacco fag". I don't mean to insult or patronize you when I cough because you've lit up a cigarette, it's simply the reaction my body has.

OT: As you'd probably be able to gather, I'm not a smoker. My respiratory tract is pretty messed up as it is, I don't need to willfully damage it further.

Nothing against people who do smoke, though, so long as they don't act all smug over the people who don't like it.

I do actually like the smell of tobacco and the smoke going into the lungs thing. In fact I did quit for years and I really really missed that the most. Nothing quite replaces that feeling. Every now and then I will still have a smoke because I still enjoy it.

I quit smoking about 6 months ago. I was never a heavy smoker, but I spent 3 years of my life living in a country where 2/3 of the adult male population and half of all doctors smoke. Given that my hangouts are loaded with smokers and no ventilation, there's really no difference between smoking and not smoking a cigarette.

I don't miss it too much. It was mainly done out of camaraderie.

People have all kinds of reasons to justify an addiction. Sometimes those reasons are even valid ones, never remotely good enough to cover up the downsides in my opinion, but still. I for one have mostly given up on understanding it and just avoid being around people who are smoking when I can.

What really mystifies me these days on this subject is the extreme lack of popularity of E-cigs. An alternative to traditional cigarettes that are much safer, healthier, and cheaper, can be tailored to the exact nicotine content and flavor the user wants, and yet I have seen exactly two in use since they came out.

To give people something they can feel smug and superior about.

It's a small contribution to my world, but I am happy to do my duty.

EDIT: I do make my best effort to not inconvenience anyone else, though. I never smoke indoors, and try to avoid crowded streets, wheezy people, children and the likes, and I make sure to put the butt out carefully and leaving it in a bin.

Some people just aren't considerate to others when they smoke. They deserve the whine.

Well I was talking about the insulting patronizing cough, so obviously my comment was not aimed at you or people with similar problems.
I'll smoke somewhere else if somebody is really bothered by it, no problem.

The thing is, when you are already standing outside because it has been banned indoors, and somebody comes up to you coughing or crying or whatever, then yeah, I get mean. Who wouldn't, you know?

Yeah, I get that.

People should be able to mind their own business.

Though not entirely the same thing, I've had a bunch of people give me the dirty looks and patronizing prejudgments over the years due to the fact that I like having long hair and am overweight.

Hell, one guy in Kansas called me a hippie because of my hair. I'm probably about as far from a hippie as you could conceivably get while still being on the "left" politically-speaking.
