I've still got a PS1 kicking around somewhere. I might have given it to my cousin, not sure.

Anyways, I'll probably keep my consoles for a bit and then give them away or sell em.

I have every console that either myself or my father has owned since 1990, which is 15 consoles (both home and handheld) and over 200 games and was taught to never waste anything that still works (and expensive). other then my PS2, PS3 and 360 the others are safely in the attic or spare bedroom boxed and covered with the games in my room, should i ever want to play my N64 i can get it out and hook it up and play my Perfect Dark. if i want to play Chakan The Forever Man i can just pull out my Sega Mega Drive and play it.

the only way i'm gonna lose my consoles is if they are stolen or my house burns down, otherwise they will remain with me for as long as they can hold out; and even then i will attempt console CPR multiple times.

EDIT: also it means i can play old retro games as the designers intended and not have to hope that a emulation of a retro game on newer consoles is not filled with bugs or bits ripped out and replaced with a new or things taken away from it (recent classic sonic collections and Silent hill HD collection to name a couple).

I kept everything. No real reason, I just don't like to get rid of old consoles. Maybe it's just nostalgia. Although backward compatibility isn't such a reliable thing any more. You can't be sure if all your old games will work on the new console any more.

The only reason I got rid of my old Xbox was because it broke. The disc tray went insane. It would open and close by itself randomly all the time, and it would never respond to any commands to open or close it. Eventually it just stopped opening all together. This was shortly after I got a 360. My 360 seems to be going a similar way actually. The disc tray gets stuck a lot of the time... when there's no disc in there. It's totally fine when there is a disc in there though, so I try to keep one in all the time.

My other older consoles work completely fine though. Except for the fact that my PS2 will almost always refuse to play GT4. Nothing wrong with corrupted memory or anything, it just won't read the disc 95% of the time.
For your 360 issue: I've had mine for years. The only problem was a few months ago the disc tray started having trouble opening. The console was vertical. I put it horizontal and it must have taken weight off some part of the tray, because it started opening easier. If your console is vertical, you might want to try that.

Nostalgia, sometimes they come in handy, backwards compatibility isn't always there... Many reasons.

What worries me is what will happen if microsoft stops supporting the 360, and I get the red ring of death for the fifth time. Will I have no choice but to upgrade to next gen? If the next gen console doesn't have backwards compatability, what happens to my 360 library? Another scary thought is what will happen if they shut down Xbox Live for the 360. Will we lose all the game patches, reducing many titles to the buggy disasters they were on launch day?

As long as it doesn't break, I plan to keep it. Yesterday a buddy and I were playing a co-op campaign of Diablo on the PS1. Once we're done with that, we'll move on to the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1&2 for the PS2. On tuesday I had a couple friends over, and we played a few rounds of Mario Kart on the N64, before playing Gears of War 2. All of my consoles get a decent amount of use.

I've always had it horizontal. I just guess it's because it's getting kind of old now. And we all know how well put together the disc trays of 360s are.

I'm keeping it. I keep all my consoles. Someday I'll have a collection of gaming's past (and possibly quiet a bit of money if any of them become rare).

I'm not buying the the next gen Xbox until it can prove that it's better than the current gen. Whether it be through social interaction like partychat or the actual game line-up, I'm waiting.

I keep my stuff. I doubt I'll get much for my old consoles, and I would like to have them as back up anyway, incase backwards compatibility is not a feature for these new consoles. Also, nostalgia is a pleasant thing.

My intent is to put a lot more mileage on my consoles before buying one of the next gen ones. I'm definitely not going to be buying any of them on day one.

Unless EVERY game it can play is playable on the Next Gen, I'll keep it.
Side Note:You should work on that grammar and spelling my friend...

Having a console tends to last longer than having a top of the line computer (which will be top of the line for like five minutes), so replacing my console once or twice is just a better idea for me.
You have no idea what you're talking about, do you?
Saying that you need to have a top of the line computer at all times, with the absolute latest hardware, is like saying you have to go out and purchase every single new TV that comes out - you really, really don't.
PCs last as long, if not longer than, consoles unless you have OCD and need to upgrade every part every time something new comes out.
My previous PC lasted me 8 years. Hell, it would have lasted me longer but I had a spare $500 and decided to upgrade to a fairly new one that will last me another 8 to 10 years. Could I play everything on absolute maximum settings? No, BF3 ran at about 3 FPS on max settings, but on medium it ran about 80, and Crysis was fine on max.
There really is no need to upgrade your computer every five minutes. Its a waste of time and money, and something that almost nobody does.

One issue I have with backwards compatibility is that in previous generations, iterations in a series would sometimes use memory card data from previous games to unlock extras (this was before DLC, back when you were rewarded for supporting a game series by simply buying the next and previous titles). You can't do this when they upgrade consoles without backwards compatibility. I know it's small but there's more.

Another issue is that we may hold onto our old consoles but they will eventually break down. By that time they won't make that console anymore and people online will either be selling them in bad condition or at a high price because it's "collectable".

Third issue: It's such an obvious cash grab because, more with the PS3 at least, they're re-releasing the previous generation games with updated graphics in lieu of backwards compatability. This means you have to buy the games you already own and still have no access to your save data.

And finally, this is more my issue than anyone elses so I suppose it doesn't count, but my entertainment unit is super heavy and really big so it's virtually impossible to get to the cables behind it without moving it and it's virtually impossible to move period. So yeah, for me it kind of is that hard to change a cable.

They may seem like small problems but it all just seems like a slap in the face to loyal consumers who are willing to pay a good $400+ to keep playing they're games.

Honestly..I have to wait to see if this "used game ban" is true..If it is I'l simply not be buying one.

If its not true, I'l keep my PS3, I still have my PS2 I'm currently playing through NFS: Most Wanted.
Pretty much this.

I've only bought about 20-40 new games and around 200+ throughout my gaming life. So, if they ban used games I will keep my 360 forever!

I'm quite attached to the current generation of games. Doesn't matter if Microsoft were to release a new Xbox next year or in three years time, I'd still demand flawless backwards compatibility. I just bought my friend's old Slim because another disc tray from the original 360s died on me and I wasn't gonna pay MS (again) to send me another console that may not breakdown.

Seriously Microsoft, get your shit together.

You see unlike PC where we can emulate bloody EVERYTHING if we have a big enough power-house, console owners will have to get rid of either their console if they don't have space, or keep it if they do have space so they can play all their games with their data.
But being a console game also encourages people to move with the times and play only the latest system and technology. Also, the console gamers aren't greedy. We don't need the promise of being able to play everything to keep us going. We also trust our memories and do not need to save everything either.

Besides, if we need to go back in time, playstation 3 and 360 already have that ability. We are capable of playing select titles from last generation on both and even more from 2 generations ago on the ps3. We have the ability to do so. We just don't see it as another notch in this mythical and meaningless "why PC is better" debate.

I highly doubt I'll be buying any next gen console at launch, mainly because they're usually ridiculously overpriced with no good games.

I shall probably just put my 360 and PS3 in storage like I have with my previous consoles. I've even got a couple of old gaming laptops and PCs in storage too. I'm never going to touch any of them again, but I like knowing I have still have them.
