the turn 4 of a random game length capture and control, you are playing guard, your forces remaining are a near full strength conscript squad, a mostly crippled but not fleeing infantry platoon with heavy weapon teams,2 autocannons and a lascannon team, a stormtrooper squad with valkerie support and a leman russ battle tank with no battlecannon but lascannon still works.

your opponant is tau, they have 2 squads of fire warriors, one devilfish a hammerhead, railgun armed, 2 broadside battle suits and 2 full squads of crisis suits with fuision blasters and burst cannons yet to arrive via deepstrike,

the game is tied at one objective a piece, how do you win the game

Call in the space marines? *trollface*

But seriously I play nids so I wont be of much help here. I would think protecting those lascannons while they rip apart some suits is going to be a top priority while getting some guys to the 3rd(if there is one) objective to hunker down for the long fight.

On a side note, my experience playing 40k so far has been either a) I have enough cover to get in close and rip my enemy to shreds or b) alien reenactment of D-Day while just enough critters make it up close to make the enemy regret this engagement though I ultimately lose.

Be really, really lucky? Apart from that you'll need to kill the fire warriors (its been a while since Ive played but last time I did only troop choices of a certain strength could claim objectives) so they cant contest any objectives. Roll the Leman Russ up and try to pot shot one of the broadsides or the hammerhead and then use it to screen the storm troopers and conscripts as they rush the enemy held objective. Hold your objective with the heavy weapons infantry, try and get the other guy to deepstrike his crisis suits in the open and then unload with the heavy weapons and Valykrie on them. If you are very, very fortunate you might just pull a minor victory. On the otehr hand, you could just hold out for a draw.

Get into cover.

Hunker down.

Shred tank types with heavy weapons.

Hold until game over.

Sometimes it's better to draw and save face.

the Broadsides will rip u apart unless u get into cover,
Don't rely on the Lemon Russ the Hammerheads railgun or the Broadsides twinlinked railguns will make it disappear
Fire Warrior will own any Guard infinity out side CCQ

so yea, without a miracle you have a chance of winning at about >2%, just a fact Tau > Guard (unless it is a full mechanized division then u have a greater chance)

Meh, they're not really problems any more, it's all been solved and documented. High-level chess is all memory and pattern recognition, and no real tactics. Screw chess, I want to play Go!

Then again, I doubt that a high level W40k player has much difficulty with this situation either.

This.

Or go all out for the slim chance of winning.

At least make him pay for it in blood if he is going to win.

hmm pretty tough. hammerhead and firewarriors mean that the usual guard strategy of drowning them in a bucket full of dice by cheap flashlight guns won't work..i'd say it's looking bad for the emperors faceles hordes.

then again, 40k is so incredibly luck based that pretty much anything could happen.

It would be good if there was an image to go on, but from what you stated, you could do an all or nothing charge and hope the dice favour you, or hunker down for a draw.

It really depends. What characters do the IG have, where is everyone, what's cover like, who's got line-of-fire on the Hammerhead, what's the Valkyrie kitted out with etc.?

Ideally, leg the conscripts at the Broadsides and tarpit them, take out the Hammerhead with the Russ's lascannon, the stormtroopers can move towards the objective and get the heavy weapons teams into a piece of cover somewhere in the middle of the battlefield (or close to it). The infantry platoon is fucked, probably, but you've made for a tough ask, as Crisis Battlesuits usually own Guard.

Sorry, mate.
