From what I've heard from my Japanese board friends (another forum I'm a member of) the game is overtly and even grotesquely sexual. I'm not saying this is a bad or good thing, but the amount of censorship needed would be very, very vast indeed. And that's just to escape an AO rating, let alone getting passed the puritan parents that campaign sexual themes with merit (such as those in Mass Effect, which were the result of going out of your way to form a bond with someone).

If they try, though I highly doubt they will, I wish them luck. They are on hard times as it is... A massive money sink could kill them.

There's nothing wrong with overt sex for sex's sake. Nudity for nudity's sake is fine too. I personally don't seek it out and find it pandering and silly in video games and movies, but there's nothing 'wrong' with it. But try telling that to the rest of the world -_-
Speaking of which,There's Fox News on the horizon, continuing to ruin lives.

Honestly the gameplay for Catherine looked quite lacklustre and disappointing.
As long as the SMT series and various other JRPG's are release, I don't really care.

In the case of the US, based on how uptight people are about violent video games, I am in no way, shape or form surprised that that game won't be released here. It's not the first time sex in a game has freaked people out, it won't be the last. Certain (older-generation) people are fine with violence, but repressed and terrified of sex.
Atlus is smart for not wanting to risk their brand with such a title. In Japan, it's not as big of an issue, in the west (even Europe), it would be.

But no one actually watches Fox News and thinks they are getting serious, honest and unbiased reports... right? We all know it's full of crap, liars and bigots who are not above warping the truth and even inventing things to further their campaign of wholesome, upper-class (white) American beliefs (delusions)... right?
They are one of the highest rated cable shows in the US. O'Reilly's show is the highest rated show on cable (or was). Be afraid for us, very afraid.

We need to take some goddamn action! Otherwise good games with mature themes will never come out here because they are getting wrongly stacked on the same pile as games like Rapelay! (Look it up,and bring brain bleach)

Hey,maybe the west will get the game under a late-June 2011 release. (Supreme court's final decision on games is in June)

An idea just struck me: Atlus is going to be at E3 2011 in June. Maybe that is when they surprise their NA fans? It is a possibility.

I have no idea what this is or what the OP is talking about. How bout a little set up next time? I enjoy reading about industry trash even if I don't know/don't care about the title.

Well, let's operate under the preconception that the game is a strong attempt at a work of art. It deals with sexuality, it's pretty clear that's the central theme.

Now, let's set aside the American dialogue on adult-themes in video games and look at the broader picture for a moment. American attitudes towards sexuality are simply not the same as Japanese attitudes towards sexuality. But the game is about sexuality?! The game might hit a lot of things that are important to Japanese sexuality, it may critique it, villify it, exort it, celebrate it. It might be about a man dealing with Japanese sexual culture.

That doesn't translate well. You either have a localization that changes it to approximate American symbols and concerns and critiques, or you have a localization that assumes you to be knowledgable of Japanese norms; either way you're not able to see the game as it is intended. The game is specific to Japanese culture, so a localization to other cultures might simply not be appropriate or on the radar.

Crying shame tho. I do want this game out here.

Change to them looking in on the west. They know if they release the likes of Catherine on our end of the world it'll immediately become the medias new RapeLay because all the people who will hear that story are the people who will never bother learning about it. They want to avoid the shitstorm it will undoubtedly cause. They'd already be accusing Atlus for attempting to turn kids gay if any of them every heard about Persona 4.

Yeah but think about something,I keep hearing that none of those people heard of Heavy Rain, which is a French game, maybe games made in other countries can go under the carpet. I mean if RapeLay wasn't mentioned whatsoever in that supreme court case, maybe Catherine can slip under the radar
