About the "internet"

The internet today seems to have become synonymous with a kind of haven for the depraved and deviant of society, a place where the "anonymous" is a living entity of collective refuse from every part of the intellectual and societal spectrum.

Or at least thats what is true for some of the people I know. To myself and many others (I hope) the internet is still just that thing that Time Warner advertises about on TV.

Recently, I made my way to 4chan's infamous /b/ forum board, and was had somewhat mixed reactions to it. But I digress.

What I want to ask this forum, which I have found to be at least somewhat more sane than many of the others I have come across on my pilgrimage across the world wide web, is this:

What does the internet mean to you?

P.S. The child of an acquaintance of mine asked a rather innocent, yet profound question the other day: "What does the "inthernet" (she's adorable) look like?"

It's everything and nothing at the same time. It's a place to fit in while being an outcast, and just the same it'll make you feel like you're alone when you're far from it.

I see the net as a fancy place where I can chat with a wide variety of interesting and fascinating people (that's you lot) who usually have interesting things to say. Those other people... the "trash heap" on other websites or communities online are places that I choose to ignore or not take part in. That, as far as I am concerned, is not the internet that I mess around in.

To put it in a less round-a-bout way... The Internet is freedom. I like Freedom.

Well I'll answer your last question first. Since the Internet is virtual, it doesn't actually 'look' like anything. I suppose if one were to apply some sort of image to it, I suppose the most fitting would be that of a spider's web or possibly a cloud.

As for what the Internet is to me, mostly a cesspool. Before the Internet, only truly talented or at least semi-talented people got to share their creative ideas with the world in areas such as movies, art, etc. Now anyone with 1/4 of a brain and an Internet connection can upload their shit for all the world to see, regardless of whether or not the world actually wants to see it; and for 80-90% of 'em, we don't. With sites like YouTube and Newgrounds, attentions seeking dipshits can slap together some 1/2 asses piece of shit and upload it just to get attention and we have to wade through all that to find the few that were done by people who actually put some effort in. And don't get me started on Facebook & Twitter.
