so, ZP claimed that the game was shitty for the first few hours and I wanted to know if it gets better later?

ZPs reliability depends on how compatible your preferences are with yahtzee.
If you want those 80 hours of wrangling, go ahead. I had the patience to finish the game but, aside from the choice effect thing it's not really that great when you get into it. The combat is dynamic sure, but its done by mouse and that reduces its interest. Middle of the game monsters become more an annoyance than a challenge and you can't really get better weapons than what you already have. The very best part of the game is, trust me, the dice minigame side-quest.
A whole lot of trouble was seen making that game and it resulted in a MMORPG-like grinder.
A dissapointment.

I thought the Witcher was absolutely amazing, but I am a sucker for Dark fantasy and not many things pander to my lone bastard cravings.

Its the closest to a Conan RPG I reckon we get, but with a more medieval twist. I very very much liked the combat and the crafting.

But then I have been playing Wow for six years now so what do I know!

That rather depends on your opinions. I loved the game, and my favourite bits where the opening chapters, the rest is fairly similar in style. So if a person hated the first few hours (like Yahtzee did) then they'll probably hate the rest too as it doesn't radically alter 10 hours in or anything.

Ironically though, it was the ZP review that prompted me to buy the game, since a lot of the things Yahtzee complained about where the sorts of things I tend to like in a game.

But yeah it all depends on taste.

A lot of what Yahtzee complained about I never encountered e.g., collecting monster drops was optional, you don't need to read books to collect skulls, combat was as complex as rock-paper-scissors, etc. The only point I can remember that agree with was that you do spend a lot of sexy time with the ladies (it is optional but why wouldn't you?!).

The Witcher is a great dark fantasy rpg from the start with a great story that improves as it starts to deal with the consequences of your actions instead of good vs evil choices that other games would do. I would highly recommend to anyone.

There was a patch that came out recently that improves the game substantially.

All new copies of the game have that patch, ZP reviewed and unpatched game.

The unpatched game was bad. The translation was pretty shitty and the whole fucking game was infested with goddamned fucking gigantic loading screens.

The patched game has much better translation, a bunch of content that was previously cut or unimplemented and 80% less load times. I'm not pulling that number out of my ass. There was something to do with memory or programming conflicts because the game wasn't really built for Windows, or at least not the same version of Windows, something like that and the end result was I shit you not 5-10 minute loading screens to step through a fucking door.

The game on the market now is significantly improved over the one ZP reviewed.

wait, here we go, this is a snip from the come-on on its Steam page for the 'updated' version:

*Superior dialogue and cutscenes - The developers have re-recorded and rewritten more than 5000 lines of dialogue in English and redone the entire German edition to create more a more consistent experience, while adding more than 200 gesture animations to make characters behave more believably in dialogue and cutscenes.

*Enhanced inventory - The new inventory system makes item use and organization less complicated by introducing a separate sack for any alchemical ingredients, as well as a simple sort-and-stack function. Spend less time managing your inventory and more time playing the game.

*Technical improvements - The enhancements made to the technical side of the game are too numerous to list, but a few of the highlights include greatly reduced loading times, greater stability, improved combat responsiveness, faster inventory loading, the option to turn autosave on or off, and more.
This is just three of the blurbs and each of them are something ZP complained about, because when he reviewed it, they hadn't been fixed yet.

i've not played more than about an hour of it but it seemed like a pretty good game. Apparently it gets better too.

I played about half-way through The Witcher (I think), and it isn't a great game in my opinion. I didn't like the rhythm-based combat. The story was good enough to get me half-way, but after that I stopped caring and stopped playing.

The 'sex' is silly. The screen goes blurry and a tarot card of the woman pops up - in which she's covered by a strategically placed sheet or vines for the nymph.

Why is this called a 'dark fantasy' game? What characterizes The Witcher as 'dark'?

It took me about eight hours to get through the first area alone. I thought the game was very solid, there is a lot of side quest stuff to work on as well if you are into that type of thing. I ended up restarting because I missed a few things in the first area (yeah I am that guy).

The second area really seemed to open up the game for me but almost too much as it was much bigger than the first. I felt lost for the longest time. Very good time sink though if you want to focus on one game for awhile.

Yahtzee's exaggerating again, it's a bit slow at the start but it's not shit, and it definitely gets better. It's got great writing, characters and roleplaying choice and consequence stuff. Overall it's a great game.
