I learned about it through "Ronald McDonald Insanity"... am I doing this wrong?

Anyways, I tried to track an English copy of it down, but no dice. All I know is that it's the ultimate in Bullet Hell and looks awesome.

This video makes me even sadder that I can't find a copy for poor old me.
The only English versions that exist are fan patches for pirated copies. The series creator has some sort of an aversion to selling his games outside of Japan. [sub][sub][sub][sub]Why do I know that?[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub]

Great. Is there any way for me to legally acquire a copy without having to learn Japanese?

I thought I'd played one of those games for a bit... but I guess I must have missed the grand epic scenery and such. Seriously, the only thing I remember from the game was brightly coloured balls of death and a little girl who thought she was in Super Swiv.

Although looking at the comments, I'm not sure I did play it, if it's so hard to come by. How many little girl shooters are there?

You'd have to look into it, but to the best of my knowledge, the entire Western fanbase for this series is based on torrents and translation patches.

You don't need to know Japanese to play it. As other have stated, it's a shoot em' up. It doesn't actually need a story, for playing, at least. Major fandom, yeah you might kinda want to know what they're saying. Playing, no.

And there's lots of places that sell it. J-List of course being one of them(if the site's porny-ness doesn't scare you off), and I'm sure Gensokyo.org knows all the best places to buy it. They have a very strict no-piracy policy. Also, patching isn't illegal.

Yes ok, its a JP meme in a country that has been burnt out on Japan and anime for quite some time. Plus, when was it bullet hell titles were majorly popular? 1995? over 15 years ago?

I can see no way of viewing your reaction as anything other than satire and misdirection. Yes its an interesting construction, Yes its completely understandable that few people are familiar with it.

But good attempt at humor none the less.

Silly me. I somehow forgot to unlearn the assumption that most people didn't actually care where a game was made from another thread I made. And that those of us who made a big deal out of that sort of thing were the weirdos. Also, Touhou isn't an anime.

I think you overestimate how many people are completely disinterested in everything related to Japan. And how much people care in general.

Also, I didn't think it was possible to make such a quintessentially hipster statement as "You haven't heard of Touhou? Wow, you lose the right to play videogames!", but you managed it. Congratulations.
And people tell me I take what people say too seriously and don't know how to take joke.

You're taking that statement, way, way too seriously.

Also, it doesn't help that other, similar forums, like the Terraria forums I've read, and most other video game forums in general I've visited, have heard of Touhou. Y'all are all making way too big of a deal out of this statement.

Anyway, I'm tired of this conversation. It's detracting from how awesome the video is.

How the hell have you people never heard of fucking TOUHOU? Sheesh, this is a GAMING website and Touhou's the biggest shmup around. I don't even play shmups and I know of (and in fact, have played some) Touhou!

Also, lol @ Cracked:

Just The Facts
1. All of the Characters are little girls.
2. Despite what Fact #1 may lead you to believe, the games are extremely difficult.
3. The Touhou Fanbase has achieved levels of craziness that make other Fanbases look downright lazy.
Well, #1 is false, not all Toehoes are lolis... some of them even have boobs. Oh, and there's what, one single, solitary, much-harried (I would imagine) boy among the dozens of characters.

Also, the little girls are the ones that do the raping.
Caption of a pic with Flan showing her RAEPFACE. Cracked gains an Awesomeness level.

Also, article needs to be updated: Touhou has a fucking fan-made anime now.

As for obtaining it, No Export For You is in full force. However, ZUN doesn't care. IIRC he even came out and said westerners should just pirate the damn thing, since there is no possible way they can buy it. At all.

No its not anime... but it is representative of Japanese culture. Given the massive over saturation in the west with Anime, we now see active resistance and even resentment toward anything of Japanese culture in some respects. I think you underestimate how many people in the west were practically given no other alternative for entertainment as children and now that they are adults are so sick of it that they will pass on ANYTHING Japanese because of it.

But its a moot point. adamant affection for Japanese culture IS a niche trend. And Bullet hell games have not been widespread popular in quite a long time, so to take personal offense at people not even being aware of something that is in essence double niche oriented is a tad irrational.

Or in short it is not at all surprising that people are not aware of a niche game from an archaic game type exported from a country whos cultural offerings are a very acquired taste.

Anyway, Not familiar with the reference personally, I understand why. The video is cool and the creation is somewhat impressive (I loose a lot of respect for any minecraft creation that is crafted by multiple people using infiniblock mods.) But honestly I am more intrigued by your voxel thread.

A anime meme basically? Am I missing something?

As far as the minecraft video, wow. Not as impressive as Middle Earth but damn, still a lot of time and effort put into and still pretty nice.

How have you not heard of New Zealand! The Lord of the Rigs films were shot here! All those Mountains and vistas were REAL!

That is what you sound like to someone who has only heard of Touhou in the most generalist of terms (ie that its a Japanese IP.) Please take a page out of the Bronies handbook and keep calm.

I too have never heard of this series ever. I have heard of bullet-hell shooters but Ive never played any them. Based on everyones reactions you may be sliiiightly overestimating its popularity.

From the video though it does look really cool, and I can tell the attention to detail must be enormous.

Okay, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and apparently it's some kind of bullet hell shooter. I dunno. I don't know about it myself, and I've been gaming since the early eighties. I think I might have heard the name once before but that's about it.

Terraria Online is a weeaboo site, apparently. Also, Touhou is pretty big on youtube. With again, dozens of videos with millions of views.

And there are plenty of alternatives to the word weeaboo.

If this is true, and I still assert that I'm being trolled. Well... I didn't realize it were possible for my opinion of the Escapist to go any lower.

If you want to look up what it is, all the information is in this thread. Therefor I don't need to tell you anything more. It is arguable the most famous shooting game in the world. Or certainly one of them. And I am one of several million hardcore fans that have been following it religiously for probably around a decade or close to it.
Then maybe you should leave? Find better pastures which can truly appreciate your tastes?

Sorry if we don't recognise a town from the obscure spin off backstory of a Japamese bullet hell game made several years ago.

[sub][sub]God damn.[/sub][/sub]
This.

I want to say more but I am actually dumbfounded. Every time I try and type something, my brain just freezes.
