I just play the game for the game and nothing else, if I get an achievement then good. I only go for achievements if the game was so good I want to play it again.

I am a trophy whore. I beat Resistance 2 on Super-Human just for the Trophy.

I'll be going for the 10,000 Ranked Kills next (I already have the 1 million XP, as well as all Spectre Intels).

It's always satisfying when the little blee-bloop! noise pops out of your set.. and it can be especially rewarding for achievements you weren't expecting...

such as killing an enemy with a toilet in half life 2...

I do find myself trying to get as many achievments as I can when playing a video game, I do like to look at the achievements to see which ones are easy to get and try and get them, it does give me a reason to go back and play the game.
And I like to know that I have more points and dedcation to the video games than the other poeple on my friends list.

I like the unique Achievements that require out of the way playing and skill to acomplish.
Example: Gunslinger (CoD:WaW, Assassinate General. Amsel with a Pistol Shot.)Who Needs The Power?(200k Cult Of Personality without using Star Power.)
And I hate grinding achievements, especially Muti-Player ones that require the game still being played. Ace Combat 6 has lots of these.

So, More unique and skill related Achievements and less grinding and Multi-Player grinding achievements

That's probably a very good point. Although having some grinding achievments should always be there for the tireless obsessives to complete, those random ones you get by doing something quirky are possibly the best as they're so unexpected, like when I got one for resistance and found out it was because I had been running around smashing lamps all level.

Excuse me if this has already been mentioned, I have only scanned through this thread as I am at work right now.

I always thought Microsoft should offer something for your points, for example, say for every 10,000 points, you should get some free MS points to spend on an arcade game or something similar.

I know it will never happen but I thought it would encourage people to buy more games and rack up more achievements.

Thoughts?

We go for achievements because the psychology that went into designing means that every time you get one you experience a bit more positive reinforcement for the idea that getting achievements is good. Honestly achievements could be more addictive but only if they games companies actually stuck a wire straight into the pleasure sensor of your brain and triggered it every time you got one.

The achievement popping up is like someone patting you on the back and saying "Well Done".
This positive response enforces the behaviour to unlock more achievements.

I personally think it's just a nice little suprise, I don't actively seek them but that doesn't mean I'm not happy when I get one.

I personally don't understand what drives achievement whores...the idea of mindlessly amassing achievements (that serve no real purpose) is alien to me.
It's the "gold star" syndrome. Beating a game or a particularly difficult segment is like getting a good grade on some assignment in elementary school. The achievement is simply the equivalent of a worthless gold start sticker being placed on your paper. It adds nothing of merit to the achievement but recognition of your accomplishment above and beyond the normal level is always fun.

I like PS3's trophies because of the ability to have a quick summary on how good I am at games, which I've completed, and what I've managed to achieve generally. If I had a 360, I'd no doubt have achievement rampages. I also like Sony's promise that people with more trophies will have access to a wider range of betas and extras, although it seems a little unfair on people that can't afford piles of trophy-compatible games.

So you posted just to tell him it's been done before? Who cares? Apparently, 3 pages of people still want to respond so repeat posts are fine.

I started a post that was a repeat and I had all these righteous asshole trolls spouting off at the "mouth" about repeat this, search that. I couldn't help but wonder why they took the time to post in my thread just to tell me it's been done already. Jeesh, go out and make some friends.

Ok point taken, I apologise if merely stating that the thread had been done, in a polite manner, was taken as insulting, the original OP didnt take it as such so why should you? The reason for the point was to join in on that thread, I couldnt care less, whether or not this makes me a "righteous asshole troll" as you put it, and to be honest why the hell would you give a damn, you seem quite content to swing on someone elses post (you may notice my post was done a good few days ago, someone else had already commented, and yet you feel it necessary to state the same damn thing, who's being self righteous now?

P.S mods this is in now way intended to be a flame, or to start a flame, please delete the post should you find it contradicts with that statement.

One thing I think people tend to forget is that gamers have always been obsessed with achievements. Even before the release of the Xbox 360. Even going back as far as the original Super Mario Bros, people have always been concerned with beating their games with faster times, bragging about not dying, and some games even just beating the game was considered a bragging right.

All through the years gamers have been creating achievements on their own. Microsoft was just the first company to think to let the developers put the achievements into the game. For the most part, the gamers who are concerned with achievements today are generally the gamers who were concerned with achievements before they were a visible goal of the game, when they were just an extra challenge to add to the game so that they'd have an excuse to keep playing it over and over again after beating it.

Because they're there.
That. And doing them causes a response. Them being there is like the game saying "I bet you can't do this" so you have to prove it wrong, and you can compete with your friends for getting various achievements.

At least your first reply wasn't a "OMG this topic has been done a gazillion times."
Don't know why that annoys me.

I have a PS3 and when we first got the trophies I was bummed. Of all the things, Sony had to waste their resources copying a completely worthless feature from another system. Then some of the games I had got patched and while for some games, it really was completely worthless (Burnout Paradise), for others (Pixel Junk Monsters) a whole new mode of gameplay was introduced. It was like I got a dozen new levels. For the most part, the stunts you have to pull are things you would do if you liked the game anyway.

So I guess you can say I'm a convert: though I still think some are useless, oftentimes a trophy set can win me over with new gameplay or especially creative icons (like Fallout 3: my only platinum win).
