That's exactly what I use them for. I like going after achievements, but I don't really care about my Gamerscore.

yeah i think achievements are great. I love ones that actually get you to think how to get them, like little puzzles, especially in games like banjo kazooie Nuts'n'bolts such as the "floater in the pipe" It was a fun challenge to get that award ( build a flying cage with wheels on in the end) or speedy of the collosus, which almost requires you to exploit game mechanics.

as for "gamerscore" Yup, pretty much just e-peen.

As somebody with a (fairly) high gamerscore of a little over 20,000 I feel obliged to say that I believe these claims are very much wrong. Unless over 20,000 isn't actually very high I suppose...
