It gives me a happy feeling. It's getting to the stage where I even prefer it to the classic EverQuest "DIIING!"

I love that "B'dunk!" noise. Now I can get B'dunks on my phone. :D

For me, I don't really care about achievements on my consoles, but on WoW I love 'em. Why? 'Cause I think they're a ton of fun, for the most part, and add another piece of customization to the game.

They're entirely pointless to me. I don't play games for achievements and I don't feel differently when one pops up on the screen. Playing the game itself is enough for me. Don't understand how they can add replayability either. A game is replayable if you can go through it again doing stuff differently. Whether this is a different character build in an RPG, going through an FPS again using different weapons/tactics (eg. in FarCry 2 I have done assault, sniper and stealth builds), or just playing through on a higher difficulty.

I don't play games to feel like I've achieved something no more than I read books to. I don't need a score or bragging rights to enjoy something.

I love it when acheivments are deliberatley made to be funny.

Some of the most hillarious moments of my gaming life have been at the result of a well planned out acheivment.

I remember thinking murderously about planting an active grenade in someones pocket while pickpocketing them in Fallout 3.

"This will never work" i tell myself with a hopefull and evil smile.... then BLOOP - Acheivment unlocked...... BOOOOM!!!

The best of them are like challenges to play the game in a way you might not have played before... thus exposing you to a gameplay style that you might end up enjoying quite a lot.

The worst of them are just scavenger hunts and grinding.

I always take a look at the achievements and go for the ones that sound like fun.

Like everyone says, it's for the egotist who wants to show off how much time they can play a game without having fun (for the most part). I'm sure you can tell, but I don't give a damn about getting the achievements, if they happens, great, but I refuse to go out of my way for them.

Modern games lack a score system for the most part. Achievements give players a numerical score similar to the scores of games from days long past so as to re-create that old high-score thing. It shows where you stand compared to your friends I think.

Granted, it seems like a raw deal getting a mere 20 points for killing 500 somethings with a gun in Fable 3 where in Super Mario Brothers you got 100 for every turtle you stomp. Or was it 50?

Anyway, that's my theory. Games today only show numbers over an opponent's head if you're playing an RPG so achievements score you based on how many times you've done it to enemy X while blindfolded.

The concept of a meta-score isn't a new one, but in gaming it can make sense. The bad part so far has been implementation. You can play Dead or Aliuve Xtreme 2 and never see the full 1000 points, but play a game of Avatar and have the full 1000 in under 2 minutes.

If these things had been governed better, they'd be much more relevant. As they are now, they're more or less a nuisance. I have a pretty okay gamerscore (I s'pose), but I'm a completionist, so I was always shooting for 100% in the games I play going back to 486 PCs. This feeds my completionist nature, but also attempts to exploit it (such as with online achievements).

The worst part though are that game companies actually use these things to pad out the value of their games, meaning you'll spend less time enjoying the game and more time grinding for that 1000 head-shots or 40 ranked multiplayer wins.

Kinda makes me miss the old days.

Really, it's fun. Don't take it seriously, and you'll be fine.

I mean, honestly, I like "leveling up," so maybe that taints my perception.

I don't really care about the overall amount of points from achievements across games. But when I get all of them in a single game it just gives me a feeling that I have made the most of the game. In certain games they can be implemented better than complete level X on this difficulty, I get the most fun out of the really weird achievements which make you do things you probably wouldn't of done.

Makes people play the games fully, extracting every bit of fun out of it...
That or just to make people feel special. So I believe the question is, why not?

They make you do crazy things that nobody sane would ever try to do. Like this:

Or I would never try to do Mile High Club in CoD4 on Expert without the achievement involved. Never did get that one, though.
After 2 and a half hours of nonstop attempts and headshotting the fucking hostage 3 times, I got this. And now I'm sort of bragging with it. This is the point of achievements.

They have a lot of zany humour, and they can bring back memories of awesome kills, deaths, or random occurrences. They also give you proof of awesome things you've accomplished.

Say you jump from a building, get two headshots in the air, and then stomp on someone's face as you land, in that action preventing yourself from dying. No-one would believe you (I wouldn't!) but if there was an achievement, well:

Because they're better than bragging rights. They're bragging rights with clearly visibly proof.
Onyx says it perfectly.

Not really much into achievements mostly, but they can be nice every once in a while.
Feels good to do something impressive and have an achievement saying "HOLY SHIT!!" or something pop up.
And some are just amusing, like in TF2.

i see trophies/achievements as something extra to do in the game, like once iv completed the game i can still go back through and try to do all the trophies too, gives the game more playability having something more to do once its completed

Games are collectibles that gamers can get. There like finding all the stars or getting 100%. It doesn't matter but getting them makes gamers feel accomplished.

I gather Achievements are basically like those gold star stickers you got in pre/elementary school. Pretty and pretty useless. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I'm used to getting something that actually changes/enhances gameplay as my reward.
