Anna Navarre
in Deus Ex, but only if you do it right. There are of course multiple opportunities for you to make this character die, this being Deus Ex and all, so, the one where:
You have her kill phrase and meet her leaving UNATCO Headquarters. I know that the conversation options change depending on what you did up to this point, but the best one, in my opinion, is where you and her have a very frank, civil discussion. Both of you know that you're going to have to fight and I think Navarre knows she is going to lose. And so she lays out her whole philosophy. How freedom is an illusion, how she grew up in the flatlands of eastern Europe and misses being naive in her old home, but now she's aware of how the world works and she can't go back. She knows she's a slave to the system now, but better to reign in hell. You almost get the sense that you could turn her to your side, if the situation were a bit different, but she's adamant that she'd rather be on the inside than risk everything. So you respond with kill phrase "I hope you return to your old home, Flatlander Woman." And, unlike other times where she responds angrily, this time she says the classic "How did you know?" with a resigned sense of relief. Then she collapses.

Compare this to Herman who dies screaming and yelling and the quiet dignity of Navarre's death really hits home

Starcraft: Death of the Overmind. It's not the Overmind's death that's epic, but Tassadar's. He pumps a carrier full of light and dark templar energies, and then plows it into a massive brain like creature that is supposed to be immortal. Also, if this information is a spoiler to you, then I feel deeply sorry for you.

Okay, I have to give you this one. It's always been one of my favorite cut scenes ever.

ENORMO-SPOILERS INCOMING. Just mentioning the game title will probably spoil it, so here goes.

John Marston's death at the end of Red Dead Redemption. Never has a game death hit me quite so hard, probably because I'm one of the lucky few who didn't have it spoiled, which is why I wanted to be so careful about it. I cried manly tears because it was just so sudden. Think about it, Dead Eye throughout the game has made you invincible. Giving you one moment of Dead Eye lifts your spirits only to cruelly stomp on your pathetic ideals of hope. It truly was the death of the West.
Missed this one with my last post, have to comment on this. This may be my favorite. How could I forget. I too did not have this moment spoiled and it was a beautiful thing.

As for the spoiler tag, T-Bone, you really should say the name of the game before you say the total spoiler. I edited the quote in my post here. That way somebody can still turn around if they see the name of the game and maybe not have it completely ruined. But with just blurting it out finally, I think some people may be surprised.

Good catch on that one, I've put up a fourth barrier.

Because I'd absolutely hate for it to be spoiled. I went in to TITLE REMOVED without knowing anything about it and I loved it. The PLOT POINT REMOVED was incredible, until some jackass went around and spoiled it among my friend group. Thankfully I had already finished but I can't stand spoilers. Again, good call on the spoiler tags.

I agree entirely. That moment hit me like a punch to the chest. It's one of the most powerful moments I've ever experienced while gaming.

For some reason the death scene of The End from MGS3 stuck with me, so I'll go with that. One of the coolest boss battles I've played, too.

Oh yeah, and there's the one at the end of Soul Reaver 2, where
Raziel the wraith kills Raziel the Sarafan with the Blood Reaver, looks into the eyes of his former self and, with as much disgust as he can muster, says, "I renounce you."

One that made me shed a tear would have to be one from Nier.

Emil's. Especially the usage of the characters name. It all comes together so well.

Nothing like shooting a person in the head with the Black Hawk in Fallout 3 while in VATS.

I got in trouble for spoiling these, even though the game is 18 years old:

In the beginning of Dante's Inferno...

I don't care who you are, any game in which you make Death himself beg for his life sets a new standard for badass.

This thread easily gets the "best title ever" award!

I'd go for any boss in WoW. You know, after you wiped a few times before you killed him... It's so satisfying!

I love first person deaths. Mirror's Edge deaths were awesome, especially if you jumped off a reaaaaaaaaally tall building. The noise begins to get so loud it scares you.

For scripted deaths...uhh. The ending of Quake 1 was lulz. You telefragged Shub-Niggurath. :p

The President of the Middle Eastern Nation (did they ever say its name) in CoD 4. Having yourself ride around in a car watching as a revolution takes place around you, then getting executed all while in first person is pretty chilling. And later on when you're the soldier who gets to crawl around after the nuke goes off.

Hell, another good one is from MW2:
Roach's and Ghost's death at the hands of General Shepard. First person deaths are usually pretty heavy.

And the one death at the end of Brutal Legend was kinda funny. You know which one I'm talking about.
