Karma strikes again! This was coming from a mile away.

Also, it goes to show that being an arrogant douchebag and trying to troll the internet with your "meme" will get you fired.

I have a feeling this is all part of Microsoft's marketing strategy. They are just spreading the worst rumours possible about their next console as the actual one wouldn't be able to live up to the high expectations people would otherwise have.

So when they finally reveal it as not actually being always online everyone will be like "Oh Microsoft, thanks for listening to us and not actually making it always online. You truly listen to and value your customers."

Then when people criticize the actual features of the Nextbox fanboys will be like "Well at least it's not always online" and forget about the underwhelming-ness.

That's right Microsoft.. I see what you are doing there..

Well, all I can say for sure - given the information available - is that if Microsoft did fire him, it was a prudent decision. After all, it's a business. The goal of a business is to make money, and one way that effort can be hampered is making your customers angry.

And hopefully - if they were planning to make the next Xbox always-online in the first place - this will make them reconsider. After all, releasing a product that actually has that feature would drive away a lot more customers than saying "Deal with it" in response to a rumor.

Off-topic: Whichever company's slogan is "Our wisdom is teeth" can kiss my ass.

Even then that sounds like a pretty stupid idea... it's like going "Surprise! We're not as bad as you think we are! Sure we're still no less evil than Sony, but we're not as bad as always online! Wait... guys? You still there? No don't leave, I'm sorry for all those jokes and insults/open contempt we appeared to show you but we didn't mean it! Please come back!"
I'm not convinced it wouldn't come off as anything else than Microsoft seeing all the bad press, scrapping the feature then trying to bluff that it was a joke all along.
I wonder if Orth would get his job back then if that was the case? I mean sure he was a jerk, but he was doing what Microsoft wanted.. hmm.

Beautiful. Yes this was well deserved he was a total jackass who obviously wasn't taking his position seriously, you don't make statements that hint's your customers are being whiny bitches its their money for gods sake.

Microsoft has earned back some respect from me for firing this total cretin.

Considering he compared a having a phone line to gaming I don't think he's that great of a loss to the industry. Guy clearly has no clue.

This right here is why Chris doesn't talk about games on No Right Answer. Even when you aren't high up in a company, when you are in the public eye what you say on the subject can reflect on that company. The higher up the bigger impact.

That sounds devious enough that it just might be true, I wouldn't put it past them.

I doubt it was out of the kindness of their hearts.
Yeah it wasn't because I thought they were trying to dissipate a stupid rumour I bet they'd love an always online console. It's just that microsoft does a lot of stupid shit (see windows 8) and getting rid of this Orth chump seems like a genuinely sensible move.

However thanks for telling me about NDA's I had no idea what they were before you explained it.

Not surprised, just karma working in a surprisingly swift fashion. Mind you if that's the kind of mindset that Microsoft breeds then I'm still not impressed. They've not released a statement to curb these things he said so I can only ignorantly assume they're still true in a fashion.

And a person's opinions and life views are more often than not a product of their environment.

He was thrown under the bus for being the spokesperson of that mindset but I can't help but feel that was just a few leaves of a very vicious weed that's got it's roots quite far into the company.

Time will tell if it's true or not.

Not really surprised. Even the most blind of Microsoft excecs knows that broadband or cable access isn't as widespread as we like to believe. The US and Canada have terrible network infrastructures in this regard, so there's still plenty of corners where you're stuck paying for a glorified 3G or satellite connection. Orth was basically insulting anyone who has the "misfortune" of living out in the country, as well as anyone who's in one of the unavoidable "dark zones" a lot of ISPs have to compose with. Even in the densest urban areas, there's spots where connectivity is unavoidably shitty. As anyone knows, the solution to this isn't as simple as moving out. Not all of us can afford it.

Considering, going always-online will throttle the potential clientèle for the 720.

Haaaahahaha, karma hammer time! There was no way he could get away with talking like that to the customer base, look at some of this unprofessional shit...

And Microsoft's apology:
"We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers. We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."
The very fact all this has happened puts some faith in me that Microsoft aren't stupid enough to make XBox 720 always-online. Just some faith :p
