It seems to me a lot of the advertising on Escapist is pointless. Aside from perhaps alerting me that a game I'd been waiting for for over a year has recently come out [I generally know the quarter, not the exact date] the advertising is a waste.

It's a gaming website. Most of us here follow games fairly closely and have a good idea of what we plan to get and what we plan to avoid. Seeing Duke Nukem plastered all over the video frames isn't going to incite in me an urge to purchase. Nor is showing me the Skyrim trailer a billion more times going to make me want to buy the game anymore.

I'm glad it pays the hard workers behind the scenes at Escapist, but as for efficiency; not so much maybe.

not that long ago I watched a trailer for brink with a brink ad that popped up before the trailer that wouldnt let me watch it right away. and the border ad around the trailer was an ad for brink and the ad that was on the side of the page was also for brink.

I think some of those may have been a little pointless yeah?.

I don't know -- I prefer the gaming related ads to the non-gaming related ones that have been showing up recently. Case in point, I have an ad for Best Western hotels up at the top of the page right now. It doesn't fit with the design of the site, but the majority of the gaming based ads do. Either way, The Escapist needs to make money -- I'm not going to begrudge them a banner ad or two.

Yo dawg, I heard you like Brink so we...

ah screw it, that's joke's overplayed by now.

The ads are fine for the most part, but I hate that one slide-down one that comes out of nowhere asking for feedback of some sort. It inevitably covers up a post I'm trying to read and I can't close it like a normal pop-up window. Annoys the hell out of me.

To clarify, I'm not saying I dislike the ads, I just got to thinking that it's not terribly efficient. It'd be like putting one of those 'Basic Algebra Tutoring' papers with the tear-able tabs at a quantum physics lab lobby.

Who cares, though?
There's some kinda logic and efficiency to the art of advertising, or they wouldn't be doing it.
Ad people will do what they do, and more importantly, they'll pay Themis Media to let them do it.

I'm all for paying Susan's salary.

There have already been fights and arguments over this. Out of all the Escapist does for its own revenue, the things you are speaking about are the least harmful of all.

The advertising works on a sub-conscious level as much as anything else, just because you dismiss it, doesn't mean it has no effect.

It would be nice if the videos didn't cut to the adverts 15 seconds in, but on the whole...I'm not really bothered by any of it.

Oh, I don't even register adds anymore. And no, I do not have any exterior programs to get rid of them on here. I'm just very good at forgetting them again.

Now ad-captchas... that'd be a sly way!

Given the choice between advertisements and having to pay for our Escapist content, I know which I'd pick. =p

The only ones that irritate me are the ones that interrupt the videos. I'll be sitting watching unskippable when an ad will appear showcasing the extremely less funny 'bad teacher', and then reset the video to the beginning.

Paying the money for the Publisher's Club is so worth it. As they say, time is money, so less time spent watching ads means that you make money by paying for the subscription.

[small]At least, that's how I like to justify it[/small]

One of the first captcha systems they used showed logos and things like that. It wasn't well received.

right...
why are the ads so off the mark?, first ads for the marines, which i assume is regionally based, then on for Duke Nukem Forever, which according to your reviews and forums is THE WORST LET DOWN EVER

Either way the Escapist gets paid, either from your wallet or advertising agecies.

I do remember the days of youtube where video ads were laughable, but since when they did it, EVERYONE does it, seriously its like the "like" feature, it's everywhere now.
