not even joking. it really does help. (not embarrassed or anything to admit to it)

if i can't sleep, (which i usually can't anyway as im decently hyper) get a good wank or play some games in the dark, get myself some good case of the snoozes

i too have irregualr sleep and dont know of any sure fire way to deal with it, but i do know a few things to help. firstly, fap, fap lots. secondly fap more. thirdly, completly black out your room. forthly(?), concentrate on your breathing and just that, dont let your mind wonder or else you'll start thinking to deeply and wont sleep. finally just try to relax, have a big shit or smoke a little bedtime spliff, anything that helps you relax really.

I'm being absolutely serious when I say this: wank till you can wank no more. This will be the best sleep you can possibly have.

I call bullshit on that. Doesn't work at all...
Yeah I agree there. If anything it keeps you up longer...

The first rule of Sleep is: Do not talk about sleep!
The second rule of Sleep is: Try to stay awake!
The more you think about sleep, the more active your mind becomes, thus only worsening the problem.

Then theres the following questions:
- Do you sleep in a noise-free environment?/Or is your environment too quiet? (Do you have any electrical machines running like a computer thru the night or loud traffic close to you?)
- Do you worry about (personal/study/work/social/gaming) issues while trying to sleep? (Do you keep your mind busy while in bed?)
- Do you eat between 3 hours before and upto the point of sleeping? (A busy stomach is a busy mind)
- Do you perform movement before going to bed? (A tired mind won't sleep in an active body and vice versa as stated above)

Please check the above things before taking any other actions like taking a pill and perhaps missing the actual problem.
First you need to pinpoint if the sleeping problems are the cause (disorder) or the actual result of something else.

I myself have been diagnosed with chronic dissomnia so i know how its like not being able to sleep when needed.
I've had medication for it and could sleep very well with them, yet getting up became the new problem so i stopped.
Now i simply write my personal stuff down in a notebook if thats the problem, take a walk or grab my bike for about 30mins to an hour before sleeping if my body ain't tired, stopped eating before going to bed and depending on the mood i either listen to some soothing music or turn off all electrical machines (hardly any traffic here so thats not my problem).
The solutions to a temporary sleeping problem can be used for permament ones, altho it will require quite alot of willpower to achieve.

Give those things a try, at least they're free!
And regardless of the outcome, good luck!

Try not sleeping in your bed - sleep on the couch, the floor, a table possibly, and see if it helps you.

If not, what makes me tired is watching TV (mainly Adult Swim) at night, or Morgan Freeman.

First try masturbation, something that naturally induces sleep. Also working out or eating a lot before hand can help.

In a worst case scenario stay up very very long until you are so tired you have to sleep, do this at a reasonable time.

Besides that you should ask a doctor that can give you some advice (and some plidex or dormicum), the next best thing that works for me is to lay down and try to read a book...

I know it's not much use now, but go and see a doctor about it. I had trouble sleeping for years, and now I have some medication to deal with the underlying problem, I can finally sleep like a regular human being. It feels really, really good.

In the short term, though, try reading until your eyes start closing of their own accord. For some reason, escapism helps with sleep. However, films and games require too much interaction, and will wake you up again. Reading, however, seems to work fine!

Also, and this is pretty much impossible, try not to worry about the fact you're not sleeping. Don't look at a clock to work out how long you've been awake for, don't keep reminding yourself you're still awake. Think of something else for your mind to drift off to. If your imagination's any good, construct a little world out of it.

Okay, for years now, I've had trouble sleeping. Like, very bad trouble. Slowly I've noticed myself begin to change, as I become worse, and I'm slowing down and becoming less good at performing...well, most tasks. Most nights, now, I generally spend a good...I suppose until about 5-8am actually trying to fall asleep. Even if I'm VERY tired, I will reach a certain point in the night and suddenly I lose the ability to fall asleep, same time everynight. Even though I've been anticipating it all day.

However, tomorrow I have to be up early, and I will be doing something that requires a lot of concentration. Are there any suggests for food or some activity I can do? I feel very groggy, but sleeping itself is out of the question. Before someone suggests sleeping pills or a doctor, or anything that requires routine or something that'll take longer than a day, it's currently 12:47am... I have to be asleep, now. It's not something I can put off until tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Thank you!
I actually have the same problem. I can sleep all day if I want to but as soon as 9pm rolls around I can't sleep at all. For immediate fix I would recommend reading something rather boring until you pass out. This should be a book rather than something on your computer.

Now for future cases pick up a bottle of Tylenol PM or some other sleep aid. Be careful not to overuse them, however. Only use them in cases like this where you must be up very early. If that doesn't work, see a doctor. He may be able to give you something stronger.

I'd open a window. Get some fresh air in your room.

And turn your lights off.

Apart from that, I haven't got much else.

Put on some classical music and take a bunch of tylenol. Walk around your house for a bit, but most important FORGET ABOUT BEING AWAKE. If you feel anxiety about tomorrow or even worse, anxiety about something bad happening tomorrow because you didn't get enough sleep, you'll never be able to get to sleep.
But you should get to a doctor about the whole sleep thing asap after that. Not healthy man D:

I agree. In fact, I usually wank myself out of bed in the morning if I can't get myself up :D

I suffer from similar sleep-disorder problems. Sadly the only thing that seems to work consistently for me is cuddling a girl...and right now I'm single (and wide awake). Short of blunt-force trauma or enough alcohol to kill an entire frat house, you're just gonna have to deal.

Try Melatonin. It's not a narcotic, it's a compound your body produces while sleeping. Taking a supplement (you can get at any vitamin or health food store) just before you plan on going to be should help.
Melatonin isn't the best for falling asleep, but it has the added bonuses of not being addictive and won't make you sleep too much. A lot of sleeping aids will put you out for 10+ easy; Melatonin won't.

Should be perfect for someone who just needs it once in a while.
Yes.
As long as you give yourself 6- 8 hours sleep, you wont be drowsy when you wake up either.

I used to have insomnia (really I think I?m just a night owl because left to my own devices I?ll revert back to staying up later and later) and I tried chamomile, valerian root, and other natural remedies but melatonin was the only one that would just knock me out. Maybe it doesn?t work that well for everybody but it worked well for me.
