Simple really, I've been console-less since last November and I am now having Vietnam style flashbacks of Oblivion that need satisfying. I was hoping for a balanced and considered answer from you guys as to which console is most reliable and offers the best value for money out of the 360 and PS3. I've got a load of games for the 360 but I got through two of them in two years so reliability is a big issue.

And please don't let this descend into the 'my console is better than yours' debate like every other thread on this topic.

Well, for reliability I can't help but say the PS3. It lasts pretty long and there are far fewer catalogued errors with it.
The 360 has some pretty damn good exclusives, like Left4Dead and Gears, and so does the PS3, like Final Fantasy and God of War.
It all comes down to exclusives, and whether you're prepared to pay subscription.

A truly balanced answer is not an answer at all. :)

Well, strictly speaking from my perspective, I had an overall more positive experience with my PS3.

It's not a bad choice if you're concerned with reliability, and there's more than enough games to satisfy your needs.

If we're just talking reliability, the 360 has a failure rate somewhere between "unacceptable" and "abhorrent", depending on where the data originates. Besides that, it and the PS3 are very very comparable. It's just a matter of exclusives. If you already have a lot of 360 games, though, I'd say that sounds better... unless it fails again.

Whatever you do don't get a cheap PC for Oblivion then get stuck in the trap of downloading and playing the thousands of mods there are for the game. That would be terrible.

I have a laptop that can play a fair few older games but I dislike the aspect of constantly checking to see if a game will run on it or not and it becoming obsolete so quickly.

Although you have a point there, if you REALLY want a console, wait for the next generation. Its kinda pointless buying 7th gen when 8th is imo just around the corner. Id say 2014? :p

If you have money to waste, go for PS3.

Wait so you had a 360 but it broke? Did you play all these 360 games and most of the exclusives for the console? If you haven't played the games you've already bought I'd go for the 360.. but then again I guess you could sell them. If you haven't had a ps3 before and want to try out the exclusives go for it.

Quick question, my pc's quite old and wont play games that were released in the last few years all that well... Anyway, how much would it cost to get a pc that plays recently released games, and Crysis. Not a big fps'er but really want to see how good it looks.

I would say Xbox again because of the games you already have but if you want a PS3, get one. Again I say, this generation is balanced. If you do buy a PS3, get the slim. The YLOD is more frequent in the fattys.

Go for oblivion on PC.

Personally I would invest in better parts for my PC if anything, maybe some new games. But if you really want a console I guess the 360 is the most common choice.

I doesn't become obsolete -that- quickly. I have a computer that is maybe about 4 years old and I can still play the games I want to play just fine. Having a proper desktop is way more worth it than a console IMO.

However as far as a console goes, and if you don't want a desktop, I'd get a 360. While the first run of the consoles was rather questionable, Microsoft has really turned things around and the consoles are more reliable now. No to mention, Microsoft offers 3 year warranties on their consoles. The Library is also pretty decent as well.

In regards to the PS3, I personally haven't found many games that are of much interest maybe aside from God of War 3 , Metal Gear Solid 4, and Little Big Planet. I'm sure others can give you recommendations on other games, but those were the only ones that seemed to be worth playing IMO. Honestly, the PS2 has a much better library, but the ability to play those games on some of the newer PS3's can be questionable. In that regard, you might just be better off getting a PS2. They're on the cheap and there is a large library of very good games, and if you look in the right places, you can get some excellent games on the cheap.

700 bucks from scratch, if you're smart. (not including, mouse, keyboard, monitor)

Upgrading then costs less. Much Much less.

For Crysis you'll need a pretty intensive rig I think. I've got a laptop which aren't well known for gaming but it runs Rome Total War and Battlefield 2 smoothly which is good enough at the moment.

Ultimately, if reliability is your priority, don't touch a 360 with a bargepole. Reportedly the new 360s are more reliable than old 360s, but that's a bit like saying new tyres are more round than old tyres. That said, when multiformat games are concerned, the PS3 tends to be most likely to wind up with a cruddy port. That not to say all PS3 games are cruddy ports, far from it. On exclusives, we can argue all week on which console has better exclusives.

From the OP, it sounds that you have most of the 360 assessories you want already, so the 360 will probably wind up a bit cheaper than a PS3 and having to buy your games & assessories again. On balance, it's your call.

That all said, once you get a taste for Oblivion's PC mods, you're likely to not look back. So, to conclude, buy/build a PC.

My personal recommendation is the PS3.

The online is free, and is server based as opposed to Xbox LIVE where you pay for peer to peer. You have your controller rechargable battery, and wifi included with the price, rather than paying for a £60 wifi dongle and a play and charge kit. It has just as many decent exclusives, and the multiplatform games, admittedly aren't always as good as their 360 counterparts but the differences are minor.
The hardware is more reliable as well statistically speaking.

That's just what I think, fact of the matter is I own both and enjoy them both. I'm just saying which one the best value for money and most reliable console is in my opinion.
