A couple of days ago, I saw my best friend sporting a Fedora, and I realized something. I kinda want a nice hat to wear, something that just seems plain neat, not a baseball cap, something that you don't see every day but don't begrudge people for wearing. Any ideas?

Oh yeah. Nothing says "dashing", "sophisticated", or "cool" like a good top-hat. Well, maybe a fez, but for entirely different reasons. ;)

Spetsnaz beret. Nothing says "I kill people for a living" like a beret.
Just make sure you can pull off wearing a beret without incident.

Fedoras are always classy, but my go-to hat would most definitely be my umbreon hat. That shits the classiest of all pokemon hats. :3

Then you have a different opinion on people who wear fedoras than I do.

I like the ivy cap

Being entirely serious, I'd like to help you out, OP. I'm not exactly an expert or afficionado of hats, but I know a thing or two.

First of all, just as no man is an island, no hat can be pulled off without a suitable paired outfit.

What is your typical choice of casual/smart casual outfit?

I will give you advice on hats. Do not wear it indoors lest you be a schumck.
As for what sort of hat to wear, it's a personal thing. I'm not a hat person, but occasionally in the colder months I'll go with a simple black beanie. Don't get a fedora unless it REALLY suits you and you can REALLY pull it off, otherwise you'll just look like a nob-end. Maybe if you want to be just a little unique, something like a denim skullcap. I dunno. Get some examples, post some pictures, let us judge you! hooray!

Seriously, don't do it.

I really have to second this. I've seen several clowns walking around with fedoras and none of them look "cool". They just look like self-absorbed dorks.

If you want a 'classy' hat, get an Ivy Hat, a flatcap, or even a Hipster Beret. Those are at least acceptable in public and you won't look like a dork.

I really like tiny cute hats, I have one for a christmassy costume, but I doubt that would look very nice on a guy, it's more like a hairpiece than a hat. Most guys dont suit hats because the clothes they wear do not fit with the hat... You could always take inspiration from Adam Savage (MythBusters), cause that type of hat works better than most with a casual outfit... When I see a guy with a fedora it's usually accompanied by tight jeans (frequently in an absurd color) and multi-colored shirts. That automatically has me think "douche"...

If your kind of the fit military type a Boonie is always neat, and works in both rain and sun... But thats maybe a bit too much like a cap, more a practical piece of headwear rather than a decorative one. You COULD just do like me though and wear mostly cat ears instead, those are cute and fun to wear, and I bet you'd get even more positive attention if you wore some as a guy than one does as a girl.

A toque hat. It's plain and simple, and isn't actually all that hot in the summer.

Either that or a chef hat.

Or a very tiny top hat.

Or just don't wear a hat because it's an easy way for people to stereotype you.

That said, I'm wearing a top hat.

Somebody beat me to it.

There's a saying I have that goes with Fedoras:
If you're not in a suit, the Fedora is moot.

Pretty self explanatory, and it conveys the meaning nicely: wear that shit with nice clothes, or don't wear it at all.

As cool as they are, I have yet to see someone wear a top hat casually and with out irony.

Seconding this one. It's one of the few hats I've seen people wear casually in public, and it has the added bonus of not being a fedora. Seriously, the fedora has become the go to hat for people trying to differentiate themselves, there are so many hats that need more love.

Could go with a legionaries cap

Though I am more fond of the sniper version. That or a boonie/bushwacker if your living in an area where its logical and you can pull it off.
