I'm rather partial to this variety of cap:
Neither pretentious nor archaic, and still classy and functional. I own three of them. You should get one.

Most men can pull off the winter beanie. I haven't heard Western hats mentioned yet; depending on your geographic region you may not have to be a redneck for it.

EDIT: come to think of it, 'tis the season.

Only my hat is darker and has a big ass feather. A great hat for anytime that is not job related.

I wear s Spider-man hat covered in comic book style buttons. So do something like that. Get a hat representing something you like and customize it with buttons of things you like.

Damn it, somebody already posted the fedora image.

Wear whatever is comfortable, and whatever you like the look of the best.

I'm going to agree with everyone else on this thread in that -DON'T WEAR A FEDORA- you will look stupid.

I've always been partial to bowler hats, mainly because they make you look like a batman villain.

As a person who wears a fedora around I'd recommend you go with the fedora like your friend.

Also, I would just like to take a second to compliment him on his excellent sense of fashion.

Go with a hat, do it. I have come across the same decision as you and as soon as I have some spending cash (after the Christmas season most likely) I'm getting myself a nice hat. Although personally I'm going to be going with a trilby as I prefer the brim to go up in the back. Don't listen to all of these people nay-saying nice hats, although if your personal style is more casual then you might want a hat that will reflect that.

I came to this same conclusion (about wearing a hat) 3 years ago, and I've been horribly addicted to wearing my Kangol "cabbie cap" almost every day now. It's to the point where people don't recognize me without it.

Just be forewarned, it's hard to go back

He needs to go with the Sean Connery look (Sean Connery never ages!)

Oh boy, I forgot how awesome he looked in an ushanka. Too bad my ushanka is not as cool as his.

Get a Stetson, Stetsons are cool.

I myself have started wearing the affectionately named "There's something wrong with that guy hat" more or less every day. Though that's more to prevent ear ache than style though.

flat-cap or a beanie is good, suitable during this time of year too. Don't get a fedora... just don't
