My reaction is fuck political correctness. African American is not an accurate turn. Now, if you had a man from Africa who migrated to America, I'd call him an African-American, but, as you say, there are white people in Africa, too. Most black people are too removed from Africa to be called African. They have no connection to the land, the culture or the people. They are just American.
Honestly, I like to avoid using even the term "Black people" when it's not necessary for people to understand what I mean, because even that is misleading. It leads to the assumption that all black people in this country are the same, which isn't true. What we normally think of as "black culture" is really just urban black culture. There are diverse cultural groups among the black people in this country and urban black culture does not represent a majority. Again, even "urban black culture" is misleading because urban black culture in New York is different in many ways from urban black culture in San Francisco.
So really, whatever bullshit people try to push on me, I'm going to go for technical specificity over political correctness, but as far I'm concerned, I'd rather avoid the "something-American" mindset altogether.

I saw that episode of Venture Brothers, too.

Classifying groups of people by where they come from originally+where they live now is stupid. Stupider is using such a classification where it is not factually correct.

Here in California we can't say mexican, apparently it's "their word", but we can say black.
Wait....what!? If they're from Mexico, you're not allowed to mention it?

"So where are you from? Is it..you know, that place? The country south of here?"

Indeed. I say Merry Christmas all the time.

I don't hate any other religion/faith or what holiday they celebrate.

To quote Mr. Garrison, "Merry fucking Christmas!"

I'd post the whole song, but I don't feel like searching.

When they say "call me african american" i ask them if they were born or are native from africa. if they say they were born in america i say "then i'll just say black thanks, because i don't make you call me caucasian, or anglosaxon, dick" the individual seems to get the point after that.

Native American as in You were born in America or native American as in American Indian? haha. Isn't trying to be politically correct fun?

I had black professor always made a big deal about being black. "I've never been to Africa so why are you telling me i am?" He also told us that if he was white he would prefer to be called caucasian and told us the origins. (It was a sociology class)

So.. lately a lot of black people have been angry at me because I say "Black people" instead of "African American.." Personally, I think the term "African American" is stupid and incomplete.. what if I mean blacks in Africa? Or England? or Cuba? And what if a white guy is born in Africa, and moves to America? He would be African American too, despite being white.
The point is.. what is so wrong with just saying "black people?" We can say white, mexican, etc... but we can't say black now? Its only recently that this is happening to me

...btw, I'm native american

Well I suppose if you call yourself "Native American" instead of "Red Person/People" you could at least extend the favor and refer to people of African decent "African American" instead of "Black Person/People."

BTW I'm going to call you a "Red Person" from now on until you stop useing the term "Black People" in any and all posts here.

Behold African American's you have a new champion here on the escapist and he (Ma55ter_fett) is a dick, but you can't always choose your allies.

Well, this thread has started me with an idea which I will carry out. Instead of calling black people, Black People or African Americans, I'm going to start calling them Zulus.

I mean it, I'm really going to do that. The probability (being that I live in Texas) I don't think to many will get it.

On topic. It's a double standard, again. I'm starting to think this whole political correctness thing can be left behind. I'm getting really sick of different people groups abuse it to advance themselves in society when they are not the best qualified.

Oh I suppose if they're actually American citizens now they might prefer to be called that than Mexican, does make sense.

Would be like me calling y'all colonials. :D

No longer really true and kinda irritating.

I remember such a case, where a white man was born in africa and he refered to himself as african american, and people were going apeshit over it. Literally acting like he was some white supremacist. What im trying to get at is, people are effin retarded.

I try to leave out race entirely most of the time, but I call them blacks because it's faster.
For other groups I call them by their heritage(Asians, Arabs, Latinos...) aside from whites.

Well, of course I wouldn't call people African-American if one or both of those were incorrect. For example, I describe my black friend as Anglo-African.

Actually...You're the only person who bought that up.

I was confused about my Heritage....Really, I'm not African...I'm Afro American mixed with Jaimanca/ cuban discrent.

It's a delicate sitaution and really a pain in the butt. My advice would be to either keep using Black or try 'Afro-american.'

I hope that's helps...a little.
