Haha, i've never ever understood the whole political correctness thing with what to call blacks. As i've said many times, I am from Africa and I am an immigrant to America so I am basically "African-American" (but I am Pakistani/Indian). And since Africa obviously has a lot of black people, one must know how to treat them. I'm sure you guys know this very well, but black folks in America are NOTHING like real black Africans; most of them don't know the first thing about Africa (except that it's full of starving and dying people)and nothing of their rich heritage so they should not and do not even diserve (for the most part) to even be called African. In Africa, the racial terms used are based on each specific ethnic group in the different African countries, like the Mwanga and Rungu ethnic groups in my country (Zambia) and if you don't know their specific ethnic group or tribe you just say "Zambian".

So.. lately a lot of black people have been angry at me because I say "Black people" instead of "African American.." Personally, I think the term "African American" is stupid and incomplete.. what if I mean blacks in Africa? Or England? or Cuba? And what if a white guy is born in Africa, and moves to America? He would be African American too, despite being white.
The point is.. what is so wrong with just saying "black people?" We can say white, mexican, etc... but we can't say black now? Its only recently that this is happening to me

...btw, I'm native american
Well I suppose if you call yourself "Native American" instead of "Red Person/People" you could at least extend the favor and refer to people of African decent "African American" instead of "Black Person/People."

BTW I'm going to call you a "Red Person" from now on until you stop useing the term "Black People" in any and all posts here.

Behold African American's you have a new champion here on the escapist and he (Ma55ter_fett) is a dick, but you can't always choose your allies.
But I live in America, and my ancestors were Native to this land, so "native American" is the correct term. As for calling me red, I'm from a northern Inuit tribe, so my skin is the same color as a white person's.

A world where anyone can say anything about anyone is a world we should live in.
What?! Have you heard what comes out of people's mouths? There is real racism out there, like white supremacists, who genuinely believe that anyone but whites are dirt. Then there's the rascit attitudes of the Arabs who believe white people are the devil's get. Then there are sexist guys who say the most disgusting degrading things about women. These are a few off the top of my head.

An egalitarian world is the world we should live in. But that's never going to happen.
People should be allowed to say what ever they want. As long as they don't act on what they say I see no problem in saying these things.

"Taking offence" is possibly the most annoying thing people can do.

"If you don't say X you will offend me" Fuck that, fucking stupid.

Funny how only minorities can pull this shit, A black kid called my mate some form of white racial slur at school and recieved no punishment for it.

If my mate had of called him a ****** he would have got expelled.
"People should be able to say what ever they want. As long as they don't act on what they say i see no problem in saying these things"

So your fine with what the Taliban say about us in their promotional videos? Your fine with what Nazi extremist say about Jews and the Zionist movement? Your fine with propaganda?

Although i hate it when people take it to far, and read to much into a simple comment when they're genuine racists they should keep their opinions to themselves. Just because you don't act on it doesn't mean you should be able to say something offensive.

I don't live in America so i can't comment of current racial tensions between blacks and whites. I do however live in Australia where we have a far more diverse population.

Here in California we can't say mexican, apparently it's "their word", but we can say black.
Wait....what!? If they're from Mexico, you're not allowed to mention it?

"So where are you from? Is it..you know, that place? The country south of here?"
Mexican american I guess, there is alot of them here, some are ok with it but others, act like I'm saying spick or something. IDK???
Oh I suppose if they're actually American citizens now they might prefer to be called that than Mexican, does make sense.

Would be like me calling y'all colonials. :D
SOME are citizens, but I suppose it does make sense for some....:D

No longer really true and kinda irritating.

If "black" is politically incorrect, I will use it just to piss of the nuts who tell me not to say "Merry Christmas" because it's offensive to non-Christians. Seriously! You do your thing and I'll do mine.
Indeed. I say Merry Christmas all the time.

I don't hate any other religion/faith or what holiday they celebrate.

To quote Mr. Garrison, "Merry fucking Christmas!"

I'd post the whole song, but I don't feel like searching.
Ah, thank you. I am now happy :D

This guy is an African American. Would anyone call him that? Nope. Fact is he's more African then most black people. This is why using African American to refer to black people is wrong.
Besides, didn't they figure out that genetically we're all from Africa anyway? That means every American (indians included) is an African American. This is why I hate political correctness, calling someone black is so much easier then then factoring in the genetic lineage of the human race or finding out if they actually did come here from Africa.

I remember once a professer was giving a talk to my school, and someone called him african american and it took the dude like 10 minutes to explain that he was from africa and lived there, therefore he was simply african.

I am reminded of a case where a guy was suspended for putting up posters claiming he was deserving of an 'African american' award because... he wasn't black! You see he was born in Africa, moved to America and considered himself (rightfully) as African American. Not only did people take issue with the colour of his skin, but they suspended him and his friends for even claiming they should be applicable for this award! I guess it is alright to be a racist if your black.

I just did a little look in to refresh my memory and the, that thing we mistake for irony, is the first people who received said rewards where actually white! It was later changed to be an award available only to black people, without anyone involved in the whole mess realising how stupid and racist they where being.

Personally I hate the term for two reasons, the one mentioned here where most 'African Americans' have never stepped foot in Africa and know nothing about any African culture. The second and bigger issue is because of segregation! The term itself is used to isolate minority groups from the rest of us, labeling them as different from the rest of Americans. To make it worse labeling this difference comes BEFORE America.

Words have meaning and power, and I see this as just a way to get people used to even more of the old segregation. A major problem in the USA, mostly residing with the black community segregating itself.

I've always used the term, "Black people." I never saw any reason to call them any different. I've never run into any problems for saying black.

The term african american is given to someone who was born in north america but thair decendents are from africa hence "African American".

If you where to describe someones race who was born in Europe (Especially Britian) They would be reffered to as "Afro Carribian" (i.e decendent from either africa of the carribian)

If you were to refer to anyone who was 'black or coloured' in the south pacific i.e austrailia/New Zealand/Fiji that'll be a whole new kettle of fish, most probbably reffered to as aborigine.

i apologise in advance if i got any of this wrong or offend anyone in this reply.

This thread seems like it is just an excuse to get a rise up out of people and complain about black people wanting to be referred to a certain way. I also think political correctness is way overstated.

PC is just a term conservative males made up so they could add one more thing to their ever-growing list of things to whine about.
"Boo hoo, pity us. We're white male victims. Boo hoo!"

/sarcasm

Yeah, seriously. No one pulls that shit in my school, because there's a well known white kid the year below me who moved from South Africa. The only people who say "African Americans" are the teachers who don't have tenure. The ones who DO have tenure can get away with anything, like how my physics teacher called a girl a whore to her face.

I personally stick with Black brown white and asian. (I say asian instead of yellow because tbh they arn't actually yellow as far as I can tell).

If they dont like it, they can emigrate to france or something with the rest of the insane PC people.
