So.. lately a lot of black people have been angry at me because I say "Black people" instead of "African American.." Personally, I think the term "African American" is stupid and incomplete.. what if I mean blacks in Africa? Or England? or Cuba? And what if a white guy is born in Africa, and moves to America? He would be African American too, despite being white.
The point is.. what is so wrong with just saying "black people?" We can say white, mexican, etc... but we can't say black now? Its only recently that this is happening to me

...btw, I'm native american
Well I suppose if you call yourself "Native American" instead of "Red Person/People" you could at least extend the favor and refer to people of African decent "African American" instead of "Black Person/People."

BTW I'm going to call you a "Red Person" from now on until you stop useing the term "Black People" in any and all posts here.

Behold African American's you have a new champion here on the escapist and he (Ma55ter_fett) is a dick, but you can't always choose your allies.
But I live in America, and my ancestors were Native to this land, so "native American" is the correct term. As for calling me red, I'm from a northern Inuit tribe, so my skin is the same color as a white person's.
You miss my point, largely because I think you refuse to see it.

Why refer to people by the color of their skin?

Why if you call African American's "black" do you not call Asian Americans "yellow" or Mexican American's "brown" or a Native American "red"

Doesn't it seem a little stupid to you?

If it doesn't then I have a little poem for you.

Friend we do not see eye to eye
Unless we agree to disagree,
Ceaseless enemies will we forever be.
Knowing this I say to you,

You have these choices two.
Opinions held by you are either wrong,
Unless I was trolling you all along.

Assuming you're not trolling me, its just the name of the race. white, Black, Asian, etc.. its not all about skin color, its just the name for it

I actually had to look up my race when I applied for US college. Never knew I originated from the Caucasus.

The topic is even more difficult in Europe, there's not many african americans here. But not all are african either.

So what else to call them if not black? I suppose moor (moro, maure, mouro, ...) would be an option, though it does sound outdated. And, besides having negative implications in history as well, is just a derivative of the greek word for black anyways. Being respectful of another is one thing. But political correctness is impossible and keeps over-shooting in so many directions.

ok i'll bite. why? why do you decide to blatantly state you're a racist fuck for the sake of being a racist fuck i mean black isn't and insult ok deal with it if people were being racist they would call blacks nigers or slaves and i'm sure there are many other racist words. black is merely a description as is white and if you complain about the term black then why should i or any other white skinned person have to put up with being white? you sir are an idiot whining about racism well being racist yourself. now have i penetrated that skull of yours or are you going to ignore me or better yet come back at me with a racist comment THAT would make my day because i get so much pleasure out of ripping these things apart come on i dare you ma55ter_fett this will only entertain me.

oh and just to make this clear i am not racist and do not extend any of the offensive words to anyone if you are offended then go cool off or reply in a calm intelligent fashion(well i want ma55ter_fett to be an idiot make tearing his comments apart easier) i am not using the racist words i put in here to attack anyone as i don't care about were someones family tree goes nor do i care about the amount of Melanin one has.

i am white i am proud i am behind 7 proxies so HA
What?

Perhaps you should read my post again.

Then maybe you'll see what I was trying to say (flew right over your head though) is that classifying a whole group of people by their skin color is demeaning and utterly stupid.

If you insist on calling everyone with the least bit of African blood in their veins "black" then you may as well go all out and call Mexican Americans "brown" and Asian Americans "yellow' and Native Americans "red" and European Americans "white".

Do you see how stupid it is to call people by the color of their skin.

If all you truly see when you look at an African American is the color of his skin then you sir/madam are the proud recipient of this poem.

ok i'll admit it you have shown maturity and intelligence you win my friend to be honest i pulled more than half that stuff out of my ass because i was angry and felt like trolling and to tell you what wasn't crap i only use black and white as descriptions as i would use tanned though i don't really use the terms unless asked or i don't know the persons name. but still if i see a black, tanned, colored, white, or other person i'd use there name as stated i use black as a description of skin color as i would use it to describe hair color and sorry about the amount of shit i made you read i was angry, tired and bored.

Whenever I refer to someone of an african descend, i almost always call them 'black", i admit it. But its not that im trying to be racist, i just dont have a better phrase for it. I am actually claiming ignorance on this one, but if anyone has a good phrase that i could use that is 3 syllables or less, could you kindly suggest one. Also I dont usually follow "political correctness", its usually just pointless euphamisms that im too apathetic to conform to.
Just for the record, I often refer to myself as really "white".
(I realize how incoherant this post is)
Furthermore, I dont usually distinguish people based on where they are from (ie calling someone african, indian, chinese) unless they were actually born there. Like i dont say im italian or german, i just mention that i descend from that. I am Canadian.

Here in California we can't say mexican, apparently it's "their word", but we can say black.
o_O That doesnt make sense, maybe they are not mexicans at all but from other central/south american country. Dont think they would be prefered to be called latinos or hispanics. I could be wrong tho.

There are actually white african americans.

BECAUSE AFRICA HAS WHITE PEOPLE.

not trying to be arrogant here, but if a white african couple (most probably south african) immigrated to america. produced a child with each other in that country. would the childs race be noted as White african american or Caucasion?

I personnaly belive it would be the latter

You're talking about the dark brown people, right?

Yeah, they aren't black or African-American. What is wrong with your eyes?

^ Every childs reaction ever to hearing they're "black".

Seriously, it's a word, I don't mind what you call me and you shouldn't mind what I call you.

I guess for the same reason we don't call others yellow people, red people, orange people....

I'm white & I never get offended when I hear "Whities" "Crackers" "Honkies" "Mongrels" or "Caucasians." (Hell, I use them all myself, & the look on an uppity old white guy's face when a young white girl calls him any of those is priceless).

For how I see it, when people stop thinking of things as racist & stop reacting negaticely or flinching at terms, they'll just become words, & the people who do use them in offence won't get the reactions they hoped, kind of like how igoring an insult or cold-shouldering a complete asshole is more effective & less foolish than arguing or deffending yourself.
