I am black and don't care what you call me. I even let a few of the people say the N word if they don't mean it in a derogatory way. I will let you in on something I thought you already knew about the "African American" controversy. We don't make you say that shit because were insecure. We just like to make people jump through hoops. Most of the time we like to fuck with people around us. If it bothered us so much, we wouldn't say it to each other. I have been around black people who get "offended" and afterwards I call them out for being sensitive. They just respond saying I like to fuck with them people.

Personally, I've never seen a white or black person, so I refer to them as light-skinned people and dark-skinned people. Anyone who has a problem with that is someone I ought not be speaking with in the first place.

'African-American' means "We don't know where in Africa our ancestors came from because they were forcibly removed from their homelands then forced to toil away in America while being forbidden to hold on their languages, religions and traditions". It's simple and easier to remember,no?

I can just call myself Nigerian-American but I know that most other 'African-Americans' don't have that option.
But they aren't African right? Their ancestors were but they aren't as they didn't live in Africa, probably haven't even been there either.

Besides, neither African nor American (or Nigerian for that matter) are genetic in nature, all are demonyms. If you personally never lived in Africa you can't possibly be African, at most you are "of African descent". Further consider the problem of referring to very dark complexioned people who do not trace their ancestry to Africa (such as Australian Aborigines) as "African-American".

So, if you must make ethnic distinctions based primarily on skin complexion "Black" or "Negro" are really the only two appropriate names for people with very dark complexion.
The intent of the 'African' part of 'African American', like, say, Russo-American,is just to let people know where their ancestors immigrated from unlike someone living in the place where their ethnic or racial group originally emerged, who are just natives. It just isn't very specific, like Native American.

As for Australian Aborigines, they should be refered to by their individual tribe names if they still choose to be called by them. If not, that's what the term Aborigine is for.
Again,'African American' for dark skinned people not of African decent is out-and-out factually incorrect.

Are you really, really attached to another persons racial identifier? Why? If they want to be called African American, call em African American. Is a few extra syllables too much to ask for in exchange to showing someone a little more respect in there eyes? Isn't that just as unreasonable and rude as what you're accusing them of being? There is a nearly infinite number of things you should be more worried about then a noun which you think isn't optimally clear.
Umm...did you mean adjective there?
No, I meant noun. In hindsight, I was walking into a grammar debate disaster, but, "African American" can be both a adjective or noun (As in "The African American person is over there" or "The African American is over there)

So.. lately a lot of black people have been angry at me because I say "Black people" instead of "African American.." Personally, I think the term "African American" is stupid and incomplete.. what if I mean blacks in Africa? Or England? or Cuba? And what if a white guy is born in Africa, and moves to America? He would be African American too, despite being white.
The point is.. what is so wrong with just saying "black people?" We can say white, mexican, etc... but we can't say black now? Its only recently that this is happening to me

...btw, I'm native american
Why does your race matter? Are you afraid of being called a racist?
Because anywhere else I bring it up, everyone assumes I'm some white supremacist and doesn't bother responding with anything meaningful

Political correctness in general is just stupid. Just because you note that someone is black doesn't mean you're judging them for it. Seriously, people are too sensitive about some things...

Unfortunately, I understand. I'm amazed that part of my post was commented on.

I think this is more true than anyone wants to let on. Of course if you state such intelligent logic aloud, you are branded a racist.

Political Correctness is not stupid. Stupid is stupid. Political Correctness may include some oversensitive people freaking out and suing over minor details, but it also includes school teachers not being allowed to call their students vicious racial slurs. Like everything else in the world, taking extremes is usually dangerous, and overarching, broad, knee jerk judgments like, "Political correctness is stupid" are dangerous.

Here in California we can't say mexican, apparently it's "their word", but we can say black.
WAT!? Now thats just stupid... soon, Mexican will be the new N word
So will Chipotle be sued for calling its restaurant the "Mexican Grill?" That'll suck, I love their food.

There's a difference between political correctness and simple douchebaggery. Racial slurs are, of course, not okay, but that is a pretty basic matter of etiquette (for lack of a better term). Of course teachers shouldn't be able to insult students based on race or anything like that, but the inability to simply identify people by their color, ethnicity, or country of origin is just stupid.

There are tonnes of black people who aren't from Africa, just say you're avoiding being presumptuous when you call them black people.

Alterinativly, learn their names or don't call people by skin colour.

Once they start calling me Irish American, I'll call them African American. But if they call me white, then I'm going to call them Mexican or Black.

Seeing as I am Whiteboy, Cracka and Honkey, all of which I am called on a daily basis, as insults, I don't see their problem with me saying they are black simply as a way of specifying them. Maybe I should start insisting on being called European-American...

He'll be FIRED! But seriously though, they set him up for that one. I didn't know "Mexican" was a new bad term. I live in San Jose, and I haven't heard anyone be offended. Then again, there are a lot of Vietnamese in San Jose.

I too am black and I do mess with people like that. Having mostly white friends they know I am generally an asshole. If someone calls me black I pretend to be angry about it. afterwards I tell them its okay and i generally don't care.

What does grind my gears however is that most people like to point out that I'm black. My sociology teach being one of them likes to ask me questions about how I feel about white people using the N word. I really don't if they use it, just how they use it.

Also I'm asked about my feelings toward slavery. Yes its apart of my background but I have no knowledge of it, nor do I have any hate towards white people because of it. It happen hundreds of years ago. Its important not to forget, but its also important to move on.

The people crying PC stuff are just stupid. As a gypsy who grew up in Hungary, I was faced with discrimination every day, but this "political correctness" is bullshit. I should have the right to call anybody what I want to, as long as it's not mean. The word "Black" is not mean, and neither is the word "White". The only way to stop racism is to stop talking about it and making a big deal over it.
Yay! A person who has actually experiences racism is writing on this this topic.

You're right though. Political correctness is bullshit to the point where it's offensive. Black people aren't "people of color;" they're black. I am not a "person of the Hebrew faith;" I'm Jewish (my avatar is there for the sake of irony). Granted I'd kill you if you called me a Kike, but there's a bold line between not being politically correct and being a racist fuck.

It is quite literally the biggest joke ever played. Every time someone has a uncomfortable racial conversation it is like we just pulled their pants down in public. It is a joke that is 24 hrs and everywhere. It is really quite amazing.
