How can it be politically incorrect? The African-American community in the U.S. came up with it themselves back in the day.
Because people want to describe every black person on earth as "African Americans." American news has called blacks in Africa, France, and Australia "African Americans." (at least thats all I've seen.. Im sure theres more)

Nothing is wrong with it and anybody who says otherwise is pretentious and insecure.
I agree as well, I think it is a fine term since black people use it amongst themselves.

OT: I would like "niggas" to be a useable term, specifically without the e and the r, since they also use it amongst themselves. If they say it to each other than non-black people should be able to say it too.

To people like that, I simply scorn them for calling me "white," insisting they refer to me as "European American." Asses.

If "black" is politically incorrect, I will use it just to piss of the nuts who tell me not to say "Merry Christmas" because it's offensive to non-Christians. Seriously! You do your thing and I'll do mine.
I say Merry Christmas, even though I'm Agnostic. I don't even think the Atheists care either. The Christians really do act stupid when it comes to other religions and non-religions.
I learned a long time ago that religion is not worth fighting over, because no one wins and sometimes the police get called. I just play live and let live with other religions (or non-religions) and ask that I be given the same courtesy. However, fundimentalists usually don't listen.

I've always had a system when it comes to races. I never say 'African Americans' because the black people here don't run about throwing spears, wearing tribal make up. I have no idea if Africa is really like that anymore... but that's the general mental image.

Anyway, I refer to 'black people' are those who are actually descent, respectable people who are actually friendly and kind. I use the 'other' term for the incredibly ANNOYING ones who can't shut their mouths and give black people a bad image and a bad stereotype and don't work to better themselves.

I do pretty much the same for everybody. Except Native Americans... because that's what they are. They're native to America. They were here pretty much before anybody else. Kinda hard to say the term isn't correct... And there doesn't seem to be a really nasty term for white people...

To be honest, I never could understand racists. There's things to hate about everybody.

I don't see anything wrong with using the term "black person". I use the term "African American" when I'm trying to be especially polite but that doesn't stop me from using "black" to describe someone. I mean I wouldn't get upset if a black person called me white. It's just a commonly used term to describe Causasians. I wouldn't really used "colored" because that has somewhat negative connotations and I definately wouldn't use Negro or the N word.

I don't see anything wrong with using "African American" or "African Canadian" or "African English" or whatever. I know many African Americans are from several generations of americans and have never been to Africa but "African American" is alot easier to use than "American person of African ancestory". I use Asian American or Indian American or Latino American and I would be fine with people using Caucasian or European American to talk about white people. In fact americans have used similar terms to talk about new immigrants such as Italian American, Irish American, or German American. It's just an easy way to say you live in America and have ancestory from another area. America's such an interesting case of ancestory because on the minority of Native Americans can really claim that their ancestors lived in america. I mean I'm 9th generation American (Amish relatives came over in the 17th century) but I still don't consider my ancestors to really be from America.

Most of the time that "black" or "African American" is used by today's generation it isn't in a racist context. There are more offensive words that can be used in that instance.

I'm going to interject here. It seems by this point everyone participating in this discussion has come to the consensus that they will call black people black regardless of what they wish to be called and call them ignorant if they take issue. I am black. I do not mind being called black I prefer it over african american, but there are those who take offense at the term black and you must respect that.
I fail to see why I must. Offence is not always the fault of the offender - sometimes people take offence at things that really don't warrant it. If someone took offence at my innocent use of the word black to describe a group of people, I would apologise and try to placate them because I am spineless and loathe personal confrontation. Inside, however, I would be thinking that they were an oversensitive tosser. I find our society's utter horror of causing offence bizarre. I have been offended at things in my life and it usually ain't that bad.
You don't have to apologize or be sorry but if there offended don't antagonize them by calling them black its not something that's hard and most people aren't offended by it but if they are just respect that.

So.. lately a lot of black people have been angry at me because I say "Black people" instead of "African American.." Personally, I think the term "African American" is stupid and incomplete.. what if I mean blacks in Africa? Or England? or Cuba? And what if a white guy is born in Africa, and moves to America? He would be African American too, despite being white.
The point is.. what is so wrong with just saying "black people?" We can say white, mexican, etc... but we can't say black now? Its only recently that this is happening to me

...btw, I'm native american
Well I suppose if you call yourself "Native American" instead of "Red Person/People" you could at least extend the favor and refer to people of African decent "African American" instead of "Black Person/People."

BTW I'm going to call you a "Red Person" from now on until you stop useing the term "Black People" in any and all posts here.

Behold African American's you have a new champion here on the escapist and he (Ma55ter_fett) is a dick, but you can't always choose your allies.
ok i'll bite. why? why do you decide to blatantly state you're a racist fuck for the sake of being a racist fuck i mean black isn't and insult ok deal with it if people were being racist they would call blacks nigers or slaves and i'm sure there are many other racist words. black is merely a description as is white and if you complain about the term black then why should i or any other white skinned person have to put up with being white? you sir are an idiot whining about racism well being racist yourself. now have i penetrated that skull of yours or are you going to ignore me or better yet come back at me with a racist comment THAT would make my day because i get so much pleasure out of ripping these things apart come on i dare you ma55ter_fett this will only entertain me.

oh and just to make this clear i am not racist and do not extend any of the offensive words to anyone if you are offended then go cool off or reply in a calm intelligent fashion(well i want ma55ter_fett to be an idiot make tearing his comments apart easier) i am not using the racist words i put in here to attack anyone as i don't care about were someones family tree goes nor do i care about the amount of Melanin one has.

i am white i am proud i am behind 7 proxies so HA
EDIT: this was posted by a bored white teen who was angry. please ignore this comment because it's mostly shit

'African-American' means "We don't know where in Africa our ancestors came from because they were forcibly removed from their homelands then forced to toil away in America while being forbidden to hold on their languages, religions and traditions". It's simple and easier to remember,no?

I can just call myself Nigerian-American but I know that most other 'African-Americans' don't have that option.
He's talking about the "American" part, because there are many people with African heritage who have never set foot in the US of A.
Oh,well, that is plain Factually Incorrect. Political Incorrectness is a non-issue in that regard. Immigrants outside of the USA not only know where their ancestors are from, they just directly left their ancestral homelands on a boat or plane. A man who left Sudan to live in France is Sudanese-French.
What? What are you objecting to here? What is "incorrect"? The OP was commenting that African-American doesn't apply to non-Americans, like when I explained to someone that Thierry Henry was black, he said "African-American" and I said "No, French."
I'm only objecting to misuse of the term African-American to describe non-Americans in my next to most recent post. Like I said, that's factually incorrect to do so right out, making its political correctness or incorrectness a moot point beyond that.

<color=purple> It seems that people are extremely touchy in the subjects that matter the least. It does not make one bit of sense.

Are you really, really attached to another persons racial identifier? Why? If they want to be called African American, call em African American. Is a few extra syllables too much to ask for in exchange to showing someone a little more respect in there eyes? Isn't that just as unreasonable and rude as what you're accusing them of being? There is a nearly infinite number of things you should be more worried about then a noun which you think isn't optimally clear.

Meh....eventually we're going to run out of "non-racist adjectives" to use on people; from now on I'll just call them "insecure", "indecisive","intellectually stymied"....I mean, that would work SO much better.... :/

A world where anyone can say anything about anyone is a world we should live in.
What?! Have you heard what comes out of people's mouths? There is real racism out there, like white supremacists, who genuinely believe that anyone but whites are dirt. Then there's the rascit attitudes of the Arabs who believe white people are the devil's get. Then there are sexist guys who say the most disgusting degrading things about women. These are a few off the top of my head.

An egalitarian world is the world we should live in. But that's never going to happen.
just for the record the white supremacists also think irish are shit. its fun to piss them off being of irish heritage.

so it's gone full circle... Eventually they might bring back the N-word but not refer it to blacks, but ot another demographic of stupid people who are mentally inferior(the original word's connotation)
