It had to do with the people on the game, and yes - that's where most of the complaint basis against MW2 lies.
Em I have to strongly disagree with you there. A lot of complaints come from imbalanced gameplay due to lack of testing and cut back of several features from the PC release to control modding and squeaze some extra money out of the game from DLC. There are also many other valid reasons why the game is hated and not even have the hate is based around the community.

Why is a knife more valuable than a gun? Melee weapons that one-hit-kill, from any angle, with just a button push, have no place in a competitive multiplayer.
The knife is more valuable than the gun due to an imbalanced mechanic from CoD4 being boost by perks in MW2. The knife is also a one hit kill to keep it the same as the bashing technique from the other games. Being bashed by a rifle or pistol whipped on the skull is an instant kill. Also back then bashing required more skill as you did not lunge forward with it and had to aim the swing arc to hit them with it and bashing duels were quite fun. So with the mechanics of bashing and how they worked so well and that a proper bash from a soldier would either be a kill or knock you out I have to disagree that a 1 hit kill from any angle should have no place in competitive play. I would also like to add it was 2 hits from a pistol to kill unless you bashed then in the head. Thats right you could bash people in the head to kill them which I found great that they took that into account.
OT: Just block and report the people if necessary. They are just looking for similar interested people or the last person is being a twat. If you don't want to join just say no and if they persist in asking just block them.
