Not sure how known any of these truly are, but out of everyone I know personally I'm the only one who listens to em so I'll just throw em out.

Clutch is a band that I love and not many people seem to be familiar with. They're from Maryland, and their sound is like bluesy, funky rock. Some good songs to check out are:
Elephant Riders
Electric Worry
Opposum Minister
Careful With That Mic
Big News
Tight Like That

Old Crow Medicine Show (bluegrass)
Ozark Mountain Dardevils (mountain/blues/rock/pop mix)
Cusco (instrumental, mostly flute and drum with Celtic and Native American themes)
Father Bill Vera and the Beaters (bluesy rock and pop)

Defunct but still available:
Creedance Clearwater Revival (rock, for those too young for their brief chart-topping albums)
Georgia Satellites (hard southern rock with attitude)
Grateful Dead (the Dead ARE a category)
Muddy Waters (blues man who invented electricity)

Turisas is a favorite of mine. Their albums are pure brilliance but when ya see them live theres just no words for it... though 'farking brilliant' is one that comes to mind

I'm gonna have to second this one. Imagine a symphonic metal band, with Viking lyrics and the singer from.......Demon Hunter or something like that....... and you'll have Turisas. Fucking love them.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I've followed some links and found outstanding stuff. Now it's my turn to list my favorite bands that don't (as far as I know) have mainstream appeal.

No Means No - A punk band from British Columbia
Rasputina - Two lady cellists (one who does the vocals) and a drummer
The Dresden Dolls - Amanda Palmer sings and plays piano and Brian Viglione plays drums.

The songs from all three have clever lyrics, much sarcasm and bitterness, and are musically brilliant.

...and now time for my secret confession. Whatever media I'm listening to (be it vinyl, cassette, cd, or mp3) I will always have some Hall and Oates available.

Never saw the big attraction in Children Of Bodom, i always saw it as more of a gateway band, what kids listen to when they start to get into DECENT metal (not sh1t like 'avenged sevenfold' and 'bullet for my valentine' etc.)

Anywho, good bands that are probably known to a few more than i give credit for;

Visual Audio Sensory Theatre or 'VAST' (Earlier stuff was Indusrtial, now they're just rock)
All Shall Perish (Heavy Metal with facemelting Guitar work)
Frontline Assembly (Grindingly satisfying Industrial)
Thrice (Hard rock/post-hardcore/alternative)
Devin Townsend (Metal...but different)
UNKLE (electro/hiphop/experimental)
Danny Elfman (Orchestral)

I absolutely love sam roberts and queens of the stone age, though, if you are canadian, I am sure those are in your everyday radio listening. Other than that, I have a long list of good punk music that is absolutely essential to listen to, such as:

against me: new wave, reinventing axl rose, or eternal cowboy
Bad religion: process of belief, grey race, or against the grain
Anti-Flag: any ol album will do
gogol bordellos: same as above
flogging molly: Wave, whiskey on a sunday (best celtic music there is to offer

that is all i want to write at this point, because i could go on for ages, take a look if you want your mind blown!!!
