Other M was absolutely Fantastic!

No, I am not being sarcastic. As a veteran of all the 2D games, this was the closest thing we got to another Super Metroid and not an FPS on a console. The only complaint I have against it is Samus herself... but you know what? I don't care because the best Metroid games have no dialog at all, they are about the games, not Samus. It was easy to ignore her because I could just mute the TV at the cut-scenes, and I did at some point.

What should they do for the next metroid game to make it spectacular? They should try to make another game like Super or the hand held games. Ever Play Shadow Complex? It's the closest thing I have played on a console that has felt like a Metroid game. They should do something like that. Or even better... HD sprites!!! Also NO DIALOG.
Shadow complex was the shit. I really don't have anything to contribute besides that.

Okay maybe I do. Go back to old school like you are saying. Seems like games just get screwed up when people try to church em up.

your argument is once again redundant. please see my most recent post before this one to understand why you are completely missing the point. (you haven't read it because it was a comment to somebody else)
You know, actually making a winning argument is more effective than saying you're winning an argument.
Don't worry I hate Other: M too. we're in the same boat buddy.

If they want to tell a story, less focus on monologuing and greater focus on environmental storytelling. I'm not saying to eliminate dialogue completely, but more often than not, let us see and react to what's happening instead of spending five minutes explaining what a thumbs down sign means.

For improving the gameplay (which I actually thought was dull), a little more freedom to explore and get stuff that rewards you for doing so. Also, no more instant recharges of missiles and no more game-breaking Sensemove.

But who knows? Maybe I still wouldn't play it. The only Metroid games I've actually enjoyed playing are Super and Fusion. Hate the NES game, hated Other M, and I haven't really played the other games. The stuff I've mentioned is pretty much what makes Super Metroid awesome (to me, anyway).

The Prime series is definitely worth checking out. Those are Metroid games that actually play like Metroid games.

No, for me, and a lot of other people you have to look at the game as a whole, and that includes character and story, to say that Other M is great is just wrong, going by it alone, it is the story of a woman who has trouble concentrating due to a past event that is never fully explained in the story, meets former allies, is reminded of her greatest failures, becoming emotionally crippled in front of an old enemy that she never manages to emotionally confront or beat, who thanks the person that shoots her in the back as opposed to explaining a situation, and always emulating him instead of becoming her own person and it ends with her never overcoming the fear of an enemy, with her emeotionally dependant on a dead man, and opting to go with whatever he thought was right.

It was true and utter trash. The gameplay was okay though, I guess that puts this game at a "pretty bad" level.

It's sexist because in Other M Samus basically has little to no personality traits outside of various negative stereotypes associated with women.

reason i'm reposting this quote is bc i feel some might of missed it and it pretty much hit the nail on the head on why other M is considered sexist.

the whole game reeks of bad mostly japanese stereotypes on woman, and as I said in my long WoT post(go read it on the first page) there were so many scenes that could of been done waaaaaaaay better, while still showing emotions ranging from sadness to anger, without things coming off as sexist, the ridley scene is easily the biggest and best example.

I enjoyed 'Other M', if it wasn't for Samus being turned into a week little girl that needed a big man to help out her wittle self.

Wow...huh...

I liked the gameplay of Other M, and while it could have been less linear, the 2.5D presentation was good. Was not fond of the mix of FPS and sidescroller, though, so I hope they pick one or the other.

Did like the combination beam affects rather than having to swap out. That felt good, that by the end of the game you were utterly destroying everything in your path, and even leaving a wake.

They can fuck off with that emotionless, brainless pest of a narrator, though. No offense to the woman, but voice acting should not be her schtick. At all. And whoever wrote the terribly crowbarred in mother crap needs to take a step back.

Still, I did like the gameplay reasonably well.

I'll second everyone who said that Metroid needs exploration and desolation. I absolutely adored roaming around those Chozo ruins in Metroid Prime 1, figuring out all kinds of details about what happened to that planet, about all the plant and animal life. It made Metroid special.

How about some actual bounty hunting?
Hah! You'll have to stick with this for that:
The rumors of it getting cancelled better be wrong. Seriously, it's basically the wet dream of everyone who ever wanted to play as Boba Fett.
Now, y'see, if you just swap this guy out for Samus, you'd have a Metroid game with all the "character development" you need. Just add a few... metroids I guess.

That does look pretty sweet though.

Simple. Metroid Other M did not happen.

Focus on atmosphere, exploration, upgrades, backtracking (basically Prime 1 & 2) and have Samus shut the hell up. It works wonders, because then the player can project almost anything he/ she wants onto her.

No NPCs. Only voices come from AIs and prerecorded messages.

Multiple planets? Underwater cities? Huge space stations? Lunar bases? Multiple, interconnected floating islands/ fortresses? Basically, I don't want to traverse only the equivalents of the omni-present jungle, water, lava/ fire, desert, ice, techno levels.

If jungle...throw in some underground tunnels/ caverns. Or huge trees that create a canopy that you can traverse. If desert...again tunnels/ caverns but also rocky plateaus (Grand Canyon style).

The keyword is sprawling. Vastness is also a good one.

Metroid: Other M has great gameplay, and considering the Metroid series isn't at all story focused, that's all that matters to me. Sure there was a little lore here and there, and a minor backstory to cover all the games, but we are not talking Planescape Torment material here.

The complaints mostly seem like fanboy banter to me, and nothing really remotely concrete other than "Oh ma gawd! they Destroyed Samus'es personally!" like she even had one in the first place.

It has nothing on Prime, or Super Metroid though, as they are both vastly superior in terms of gameplay, (as well as having a better sense of Immersion) but Other M get's some bad rep, over some seriously silly reasons.

[small] I would say it's better than Prime 2: Echoes, and the god awful Hunters... [/small]

Reading through this thread, I am impressed that the debate about Other M has actually been pretty civilized.

Anyway I just thought of something else, I thought Other M's levels were kind of bland samey which is bad in comparison with Prime's varied and interesting levels.

Samus wakes up in the shower like a scene out of the first Resident Evil flick. Other M was all a dream then she straps on her cannon and fires at a dummy that vaguely resembles Ridley.
