i was playing earlier on today and i usually use the same strategy which works most of the time.

what i do is initially i will invest all my villager into gathering wood and start off builing a wall to seperate me and my enemys, i usually delete a section of the wall and put 2-4 defense towers on the outside of my newly made gap. i then get 10 units with a strong range attack just behind the gap to pick of most of the attackers, i then have a row of pikemen inside the gap in a defensive stance to protect my ranged units from cavalry. this defense is usually very cheap especially if you invest in a few preists to keep healing them.

while my defense is doing its bit i build up my resources and build a few artillery units and then build up a good army to defend my artillery, i then send my army toward the attackers and use my artillery to take out walls and out-posts then send my troops in to take out the barracks, the stables etc then the villagers and finally the town centre

i hate maps that involve sea battles, its too easy its usually first to build a warship and then simply bombard the enemy when they try to build a dock. Failing that just build a wall so they cant unload, build alot of cannon towers and place artillery along the shore-line

I would eventually cheat and spawn armies of laser men and just go on a rampage.

Get to the 2nd age as fast as possible, send in half my army to harrass them while I'm getting resources and building walls.

In the end have about 5 layers of walls with Longbow men each section, and each section closed off from the defending towers.

Bam.

nice one, nothing better than a good defense and have the enemy waste thier resources in constant suicidal raids. its good to keep up a defense for ages until you can progress to the final age where you demolish them with your epic new artillery

if i was against you id get some long range artillery and take down your towers, walls, and archers then send in my cavalry. but the computer is stupid and would never think of doing that

I never had any strategies. I was pretty young after all.

I do, however, remember a great game against the computer:

It was me and three AI teams. A map with a large gold reserve in the middle. I rushed to the gold reserve and built a wall around it. Then I began mining, and building my base around the gold reserve. From there on I took out two of the other players with ease. Only one was left. I proceeded to build a wall diagonally across the map. The larger half belonged to me. I tried rushing the enemy with all I had, but it was not enough. I never managed to finish that game. I just felt so powerful when I was in complete control of the map. The enemy only had a cluster of buildings in one end of the map.

Um mongol horsemen and a wall of monks.

2/3 heal other monks 1/3 convert enemy soldiers. Mongols flank and try to split the enemy force.

yeah theyve nerfed them now in AoE III, they only heal now. I remember that was a good tactic in AoE II, convert convert convert and use all thier resources to build the troops and you simply conver them

You have just made me sad. I hope you are happy about that.... I guess I was right to buy Civ V rather than AOE III. I may pick it up at some point, but AOE II was the best. Are the mongols still playable and fun in AOE 3?

nah youve got: british, german, spanish, dutch, french, portugese, russian and ottoman

out of which your gonna want to either play as ottoman (they get some awesome artillery) or the russian (they get cheaper more badass soldiers). i suppose the brits get rockets and longbowmen so you might want to play as them too but the rest are crap.

im considering getting AoE II again it was definatly better
