Also, is it really so bad if some people are a little shorter? I'm not trying to advocate tobacco products but merely try to further discussion.
Personally, I'm all for the banning of tobacco in public areas (including out-door areas, the wind is not enough) and think that keeping the legal age to 18 here is a good idea.

Peer pressure isn't as easy as just saying "no", whatever after school specials have taught you, especially for kids. I'm not just talking about there being some psychological press, I mean that it's in the very basic instincts of humanity to fit in a group. This is extra true for kids, where being able to do as you are told is vital to survival. Peer pressure affects EVERYONE, and to say that anyone that does something stupid because of peer pressure is weak is... I don't even know how to say it... offensive and uneducated I've already mentioned, but .. no.. just no.
I can't even get my arguments straight because what you're saying disturbs me deeply.
Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were 16, clearly you've got the world figured out.brandon237 said:Seriously?Varya said:Woah! I'm 16 and been offered a great many things, and by offered I mean "There are five of us here, we are literally the most popular and influential people in this grade and some of us are your friends, you are having this naow".
If some average bastard like me from the bottom of the world can do it time and again, then so can other people.
If you give up your own morals / health / safety et cetera because a group told you to, then they aren't worth the effort. Sure, if you yourself want to or don't mind doing something they ask because that is not against who you are, go nuts, but otherwise, I stand by that statement, you are just being weak.
But we live in a civilised age, following instinct is normally the worst way to deal with modern society. Admittedly yes, society is moving too forward too fast the individuals within it to keep up, but I personally still think it is weak of someone to to give into something they are against.Varya said:Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were 16, clearly you've got the world figured out.brandon237 said:Seriously?Varya said:Woah! Listen. I'm not saying it's not possible to say no, or even that you shouldn't, but giving in to peer pressure can't simply explained away as "weak"
I'm real happy that you stood up for yourself, when I was your age, I did to, but in many instances things aren't that easy. I was lucky, I have ADD, so my social skills are a bit off, which means fitting in wasn't even on the radar for me a lot of times. But just because I as in that situation, doesn't mean I don't recognizes that this is a problem for many. Peer pressure is something we have built in, it's basic instinct, "stick with the group". On a primal level, doing what the rest of the group does means survival. If doing minor stupid things means inclusion, and thereby protection, minor stupid thing seems like the right thing to do.
Lastly, I don't think for a second that just because you've said no to smoking, you've never given in to peer pressure. It's in everything we do. It's why we have fashion, pop music national symbols. It's how we identify our self as a group. Sometimes it's harmless, sometimes it's less so, but we've all given in to it. If you think differently, you're fooling yourself.
