Varchld, "you'll understand when you're older" is a statement which has been thrown at me numerous times and it just won't do. That isn't a proper explanation. You'll have to elaborate. You'll have to explain in detail why I'm not mature enough to play games which I have been playing for years with no negative effect before you convince me of anything.

No, I do not consider myself to be more mature than many 18 year olds and I disapprove of the assumption. I know that I'm still just a kid and I accept that but I don't accept the idea that these games are in any way inappropriate.

Yes, there is ageism in all online games, and it's here to stay. If someone's voice hasn't broken, we're all going to assume that he is an immature, selfish, and impulsive little boy (and the older kids have personal experience about that because they were more or less the same way at that age, and now they detest it). So here's what you do:
First, prove that you're seriously playing the game. Help your team, kill enemies, whatever. Whenever you need to say something, make sure it contributes to the situation at hand, and make sure you type it in chat mode instead of using the mic. After you make it known that you're a useful player, THEN use the mic. No one will be able to judge you, because they know how you really are.
I was playing CSS one day, and an 8-year old was on. No one spoke down to him at all. He was polite, a skilled player, and he never said anything stupid, unusual, or immature. If you had replaced his voice with a grown man's, you wouldn't be able to tell an 8-year old was on.

Oh, and one more thing. CONSTANTLY saying the words "epic", "fail", "noob", "fag", "******", or "your mom" is a surefire way to display your immaturity.

I'm 14, don't use my mic in any online gaming unless a friend is with me or it's absolutely neccisary. I would say that I'm "mature" though people have different opinions on what "mature" is.

I play M games. My dad doesn't mind, just as long as I don't take it to seriously. I don't mind because they're fun.

I'm one of the lucky ones whereas my voice is a deep bass and finished changing. To understand how low it is, someone mistook me for a 21 year old before.

I don't get what's so bad about letting kids play M games. Aslong as the parents are fine with it, and the kid doesn't go crazy, then fine let him enjoy him/her self. If the kid goes crazy, then mute him or kick him for being stupid, not because he's 2 months under the required age or some bullshit.

One thing I do agree on what some people are saying is; Come on, if you have a sqeaky voice and you sound 13 or 12 or something, then don't complain when people treat you like a dumb kid. Either ignore them, or prove that you are a mature young man/woman. I've met retarded 3 year olds, I've met mentally unstable 25 year olds, I don't care how old you are just aslong as you arn't ruining my fun or annoying me.

It's some of your own age range that ruin it for you all.

Because of these things. Kids have a different view of what's funny, and they think saying these stupid things are funny. Adults see it as immature, which shows you are not mature enough to play this game.

You can't have your cake, and eat it too, children. You can't act immature and still expect mature privelages. And unfortunately for the mature acting kids, there's only one way of preventing these things happening, and it's sticking an M sticker on the case, and not allowing you to play it.

Wait, what? I don't live in USA, but is there really a law like that?
Yeah. Age ratings are partially law enforced. Not to the point where the kids will be arrested for playing them, obviously, but companies get fined if they are caught selling M games to kids.

Under the same law that prohibits them selling alcahol and porn to kids.

And to cover their asses against these laws, mods will enforce these rules, by kicking/banning people who aren't supposed to be on the game.

*EDIT* and I'm not from the US either, bt it's the same here in the UK. And everywhere really.

Look, I believe you need to have an Iq above 115 to play +M rated games, Or online games for that matter. Mostly because if stupid people can't play video games, the online interactions would be harder. Plus If your REALLY a hardcore gamer, you should be playing UNO Thats some hardcore sh!t. I don't really care the age as long as there not annoying or completly stupid.

But they already sold them the game, so how would that help?

Meh, personally I couldn't give two shits about the law. I'd rather have barbarism, where the strong take what they want from the weak. It works better that way.

Although "you'll understand when you're older" is something young people (including myself) don't like to hear, it's absolutely true. However, I'll attempt to explain it as best I can.

It's not as much about maturity in terms of game content as it is about maturity in terms of the social aspect (XBL for example). The fact is that the overwhelming majority of young gamers (pre-pubescent gamers, more specifically) detract from the gaming experience while playing online, at least in my opinion. The reason they detract from the gaming experience is that:

1) They have high-pitched, squeaky voices (which are annoying, and you'll realize that when you're older. If your voice has already changed, then ignore this reason)
2) They generally don't have anything intelligent to contribute to most conversations
3) Many of them (not all, but many) think stupid things like team-killing is fun and enjoyable

There's my 2 cents for you. While you may not agree with it, many others do, and you will understand once you're older, as I did.

Well, there isn't a law that prohibits kids from playing the games, but there is one that prohibits kids from buying them. It's a matter of parental discretion.

I am from the US, so that's how it is (unless I've misinterpreted the law :S)

I've never played with you, but the problem is MOST and yes, MOST swear to no end use words like N****r, other racial slurs and many other curse words that I find distasteful and ignorant. So, yes, I tell them to go away, let their balls drop and THEN come back.

There isn't a law stopping them playing it, but to cover themselves from any accusationsthat can lead to lawsuits, finingsm for whatever reason, the mods will just kick the underage people.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what you're saying, but explain what you mean by "mods." Do you mean mods for specific games or just for networks like XBL in general?

Age isn't a problem, it's maturity, like many have said before me.
Seriously, I've been playing violent games since I was five, and started playing online when I was 12 or 13, I'm 18 now. I'm perfectly fine, sorta. To say that age requirements are like a law of god or something, gives me the urge to call you a retard, and a possible hypocrite.

Ok, enough flaming, I recommend that you find a server with good regulars and mods, be respectful to them and the newbies, they'll respect you. Just don't be annoying.

That happened to me before my voice broke, annoyed me more because the most I was saying was "There's a guy coming down the right." The lovely responses I got were mostly, "SHUT UP KID AND LEARN YOUR LEFT AND RIGHT." They got more annoyed when I laughed as they got attacked from the right.
Some people are idiots; but trust me it doesn't end when your voice breaks. Now I just get people telling me to "Shut up you British fag." To which I normally reply "Do you even know the difference between being British and English?" They usually stutter a bit before calling me a British fag again and booting me.
It's not because of your age that people do things like that, it's because their nob heads and feel like bullying somebody, you're different it's easy.

Not that I've heard of....where exactly did this "law" come from?
