So I was reading the halo AI driving and it got me thinking.

I don't know if this is just my experience with games but has anyone else ever noticed that enemy AI is usually a lot better than friendly AI? I know Yahtzee complained about some AI problems he had with Juarez and Army of 2. I always find that if i jump into a vehicle driven by a friendly AI he will inevitably get stuck on a tree and cant manage to back up and drive around it. Or your AI partner will walk off randomly and not help in the fire fight where help would be nice. But then you have the enemy AI in the same game doing double backflips in their vehicles while shooting precise RPGs at your ass. Seems weird that game designers can make such smart enemies and such dumb friendlies.

I guess the enemies are designed to be a challenge, whereas if friendly AI was too good then it would make the player redundant, I do agree though, in games like Rainbow Six, half decent friendlies would be welcome

Mass Effect. The enemy AI never seemed to run in front of each other in such a way as to limit their attacking power, but my two compatriots would more than happily stand in front of my bullets, feebly ricocheting off their invincible friendly fire shields.

Halo too is fairly guilty of this, although it's hard to tell as sometimes the enemy driving AI is just as bad - if not worse. I've seen some truly shocking driving of vehicles by Halo's enemy AI as well as the friendly stuff.

To be completely honest, I don't mind if AI is impractical so much, so long as they're realistic. I'd rather my AI teammates cower and piss their pants at the first sign of trouble then stand still shooting people 15 miles away while jabbering some nonsense. Though currently they seem to both lack tact and realism as they either rush into my grenades or worse, throw some at me.

The worst is when there is friendly fire in the game and you are sending out a constant stream of lead death on the enemy and one of ur AI buddies steps in front of you and then you get the awesome "Mission Failed: Friend Fire Will Not be Tolerated". And im just thinking well that dude just got taken out by Darwin, not me! I was also messing around on battlefield 2 the other day (single player) and my team was all huddled around one base and would not help capture the other points so we lost. I was just thinking wtf is wrong with this AI the whole time.

Yep, noticed this. I have yet to see good friendly AI.
I thought your follower in Fallout 3 was decent. They actually kill your enemies! (More than I can say for most AI...)
Man I dont ever really care if they kill shit just as long as they don't do something so dumb it makes u fail the mission. I thought that AI in Uncharted 2 was really good. Ur friends would actually fire on enemies (though hardly ever really do a whole lot of damage) and would even take some fire from enemies letting you focus on something else or get some easy shots off on that enemy.

If the hypnotized Big Daddy from Bioshock counts, then he was great. You even get lotsa money when he dies after 10 minutes of fighting!

Yep. Decent AI there... but the enemy AI was not too great to begin with. I have Resident Evil 5 on the way through gamefly. I hope the friendly AI it isn't as bad as I have heard...

Just get through it as fast as possible so they can send you Brutal Legend or Uncharted 2!

For the most part, but I have failed optional objective because they automatically attack every enemy. They tried to help me when I fought the gang leader, and when I was dodging the ant queen. I had to restart, and tell them to stay!

Uncharted had some good friendly AI. While not the most useful in combat, they never need any babysitting and never get in the way. Its actually fun and entertaining having them around, without headache.

Unless you have dog meat or other meele kind of aid

i had to restore previous saves just for the amount of times i blew the head of dog meat while aiming at the head of a super mutant

and i remember that when the mistery stranger appeared half the time he kept shooting at a rock or a three than the enemy he was supposed to be aiming

I definitely noticed it. The enemy AI in Halo was infinitely smarter than my allies'. They already have shields, so is it too much to ask that my friends be competent? Someone has to be doing this on purpose. The enemy AI would work just as well if applied to our side (it's just that the guys on our side have no shields)

Remember the AI from the Battlefield series, stealing vehicles from you ramming planes into the ground, standing in front of you when you shoot ect ect. I hate that AI

True. Fallout 3 had the best friendly AI (Jericho kept stealing my EXP XD), but even then it had a tendency to screw up. I'm a sneaky snake stealthy character, and I found that, if I wanted to get anywhere unseen, I needed to leave Dogmeat behind, but, then, because my health was limited, I needed Dogmeat with me.

I think the only halfway decent AI character out there is probably the dog from Fable II, and that's just because they programmed it specifically not to annoy you. It didn't go running off cliffs and it didn't die during combat. If only AI people could be as good.

To be honest, AI is usually at its best when it stays out of the way.

I think it's not so much that enemy AI is better, though I'm not saying that it isn't, but you definitely notice a lot more if you're allied units are massive idiots because the result is you or them getting killed.
