Right, so i got some spare cash and in a store nearby they're both enough to get. But only one. I've heard mixed opinions about FF13 and i've played quite a few FF's myself, my favourite being FF10. Alan Wake also looks interesting but i'm not entirely sure on it though. Also, if you any suggestions for other games, gimme!

So, go ahead. Gimme your opinions!
I own both. I have beaten Alan Wake twice now, once on normal, once on Nightmare. I have beaten XIII once. I actually stopped playing XIII to play Wake.

You are getting a lot of people telling you Wake is short. This is true, but then most games today are (those that aren't RPG anyway). Later this month, Wake will be getting a free download episode for those who bought it new, so that will increase the lenght. XIII is long, but it's long in the way a lot of Final Fantasy games are. That is to say, a lot of it is running around killing monsters. Also, prepare to be confused if you're not willing to do a lot of reading in the Datalog.

Both games have some plot issues, Wake's being some plot holes and "Wait...what?" moments, where XIII feels rushed and empty at places. Both play very well, although XIII takes time to get going and the combat doesn't really get intense and fast until late in the game. Early fights feel like grinding.

I bet you're probably wondering which I'm suggesting now. I say pick up Alan Wake. XIII is not going anywhere for a long time, so you'll be able to find it. Wake probably is sadly. Square has billions of dollars already and Final Fantasy will survive whether you buy this game or not. Alan Wake and Remedy can use all the help they can get. Plus, as Yatzhee put it, it's the first game that actually feels like a horror game in a long time.

Simplest solution for parents: Make Silent Hill 2 the gateway game.

When they're old enough to play through the whole of Silent Hill 2 without crying, buy them games they're too old to legally buy.

Problem solved!
This has nothing to do with what i'm asking. I really enjoyed the Final Fantasy series but i've gone off it and i didn't like FF12 at all and really want FF13 to redeemm JRPG's for me.
Ah I do apologise. I had this thread in one tab and another thread about what kids shouldn't be allowed to play in another tab. Must have commented on the wrong one.

But er, my heart says to recommend FF13 (Cos Final Fantasy games statistically are still amazing). My brain says Alan Wake (Cos that trend of good FF games is a decreasing one).

I really disliked Final Fantasy 13, it has more angst than fucking up your daughters sweet sixteenth. I knew going into a FF game, there would be story telling, long cutscenes, angst etc. But I hated all the characters. None of them were interesting!

That's my two cents.

Alan Wake seems like a great rental, I would rent it and enjoy it!

Both games were really a let down for me. However, they did seem to keep my low standards happy and kept me well entertained for the short while that they did. Just don't expect anything your going to reply or want to go back to, because you'll probably just sell them back to the store or let them collect dust when your done with them.

Get Red Dead Redemption.

It's better than both of them.

I don't know about Alan Wake, but I wouldn't get FFXIII until you know for certain you'd like it.
FFXIII has a decent storyline, though nowhere near as good as other games, it takes a VERY long time to beat, but it also has some of the most annoying characters in videogaming history(Vanille, I hate you. And Snow, I hate you too.) And the game picks up after twenty hours, but gets very dull about 3 hours before you can beat the game. I still haven't finished it. So yeah, you should really look it up before you spend the money. I'm still not sure whether I liked FFXIII or not. It had some AWESOME moments, but it also had some very, very, VERY annoying ones.
