Today, at around 6 o'clock, I come in to my study to play a few rounds of Mortal Kombat, and get cracking on Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. I turn on my Ps3, to find that it's acting up. The controller dowsn't want to connect, and the system isn't turning on. Just staying quiet, with a light fan going, and the standby light blinking at me. This worries me, but, after another try, it turns on. To an error message. I find this a little odd, but think nothing of it, I've seen this particular message before, after power-cuts and the like. Corrupted data and all that jazz. I quickly check the PS Store, and my console shuts itself down with three beeps. Uh-oh.

I go to turn it on again, to find that it is giving me the long-fabled Yellow Light Of Death. Countless hours spent on my beloved machine, and it's dead.

R.I.P. PS3

2007 - 2011

P.S. You know what REALLY bugs me, apart from the fact that I'm out of a job, only have JUST enough money to replace it, and that my MK9 disk is still in there without me being able to get it out without dismantling the BDD? I just bought a copy of Borderlands GOTY... It's arriving tomorrow.

Now it is time to upgrade to a new, manly, slimfast model!

And if you haven't got enough money, you could sell the old one to someone on the street who doesn't know its dead ;)

You could try the Microsoft trick of sending it off to Sony, although I imagine the best they can do for you is get your game back. As a fellow PS3 user, I feel your loss.
R.I.P.

The worst part is the newer ones aren't compatible with PS1/2 games. I even went out of my way to buy a fat one thinking it would be old enough to have compatibility but no luck.

I feel your pain though, I got mine release day back in 2006 and it died December 27th, 2010.

That doesn't bother me. I have a PS1 and 2, both in pristine condition, like they've just been bought.

What bugs me, is that it has gone, just after my 6 week GCSE exam period has ended. That, and that I now can't play Borderlands D=

I have a Playstation 2 in perfect working condition too but it does not have wireless controllers nor is it hooked up to a 60" LCD, sadly. Yeah, mine died during my winter break, but I was not too inconvenienced as I usually PC game.

I don't remember exactly how but there is a pretty simple trick to getting the disk out without any shenanigans. Just give google a try and you're good to go (at least when you get your new PS3)

Bury it at sea.

My XBOX died once, but like our Lord Jeebus it arose again! In 3 day...weeks. I did get a fancy game voucher, which is more then those bloody Christians got.

That sucks, man. It (YLOD) happened to me twice: once with the older backwards-compatible model, and once with the slim. Luckily, I was within warranty both times (tho in the first case I was on my last week of warranty!) Currently, my PS3 won't read Bluray discs, but plays PS1 games, DVDs, and downloaded stuff fine. I've pretty much decided not to fix it, as I've gotten used to being without. If fixing your PS3 would eat up *all* your money, you might wanna consider just letting it lie for a bit, but yeah.. Borderlands is pretty fun.

Alleluia. May Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest.
Filings to filings; rust to rust.

That sucks, may the replacement live on for a thousand years.

my ps3 just died last week

depending on the model if you turn off the main switch at the back, hold the eject button and turn the switch back on you may be able to get the disc out.

Damn, that sucks. The good news is though, that it is fixable. My PS3 YLOD'ed about 2 months ago or so, but it's happy and running perfectly fine again. I already wrote a post about it some time ago, here's the link, if you want to give it a try. You might as well, it can't get much worse than YLOD anyway.

The basic idea of fixing YLOD is taking the PS3 apart entirely, heating GPU, CPU and motherboard with a heatgun, use flux and put it all back together. There's a video included in the post above, it's very easy to follow.

Mine died too! D: But I'm not giving up on it! It's a backwards compatible PS3 with a brand spanking new 320 GB hard drive that I personally put in. :3 And my fiancé bought me. :)) Just bought a PS3 tool kit and some thermal paste for it! Going to take it apart, clean it and apply some thermal paste in hopes that it will reawaken! >:D

It sucks too because it happened while I was playing The Uncharted 3 beta. xD Only got to play it twice. :(

I feel like the only person with older current gen stuff that doesn't have any problems. Maybe my love for all platforms and games has the great gaming gods smiling down on me.

P.S. Thanks great gaming gods!
