Alice in Wonderland!!! Were you also disappointed?

sort of. Tim burtons blend of wonderous scenery and creatures mixed with his dark way of designing things fits here better than anything else and dare I say it, I found better than avatars visuals. That's just it though, it was visual, and if it stuck to the usual alice in wonderland plot, that is to say, nonsencical encounter after encounter, it would have been perfect, and trying to crowbar a story in, let alone trying to have Depp or Hathaway constantly take centre stage does nothing but diminish the finished article. Were it not for Steven Fry's voice soothing me throughout, I would have been extremely annoyed by it, but as it stands, it was an alright film, better than many fantasy flims (Twilight being the main culprite), but was ultimately let down by its' own ambition. Also, what was the point of having Christopher Lee in it if you,re going to cut his tongue out after 2 lines of dialogue!?

I think whether or not you hated this film depends largely on what you were expecting. I'd heard that the plot was different from the book (in that a plot exists), and so I was simply expecting to see the character I know and love from the book used for whatever ends the director required, much like the BBC's most recent adaptation of Merlin. In that sense, it didn't disappoint; sure, it wasn't amazing, but I loved the Cheshire Cat and there were some other nice moments, and all in all I enjoyed it. However, I think that it could have used less of the silly, clichéd outer story at the beginning and end, though I suppose it was necessary to set up the film.

I believe it was pretty good.
Even though I was dissapointed by the fact that it did not stick to the book, which I love, they added a new twist to it. Gave it more of a plot.
The book, Alice in Wonderland, is really a collection of mini adventures that happened to her while stuck in Wonderland, with no real follow through plot. Tim Burton has changed that a bit by adding a better point to the story.
Though I am still upset that he did not stick to the book, however I still enjoyed the movie.

I agree with Hank here, i've seen the film and i enjoyed it - most of these negative comments revolve around 'that other one was better'. If all reviews worked this way you do realise that no-one would bother to make new puzzlers after Portal.

The new film is very mainstream, its designed to have a poltline - since the origional had none, it was, very basically 'Alice goes here and looks at the concept art, look how wierd it is'. If you wanted that, forget film tickets and go take some LSD.

This is a very origional interpretation of Alice, the characters are given depth, personalities and stories. The film is even left with a conclusive ending, as opposed to the other, more irrating cliques of 'And then she woke up, and it was all a dream'.

Positives: Beautiful visuals, CGI and costume design

Criticisms: over development of some characters and not others i.e. Alice gives the role of main character to the Hatter all too frequently

Just Alice kind of goofing off and such. That would've been great. We would've gotten more time to enjoy the great characters that makes the wonderland stories so great in the first place.

You get Alan Rickman as the blue caterpillar and you only give him two scenes? Fuck that.

Anyway I agree. The movie was so 'un-crazy' it hurt. It was tame. Why would you take Alice, which is basically about random encounters with silly and random shit, and turn it into a fantasy film of riding across the land, gathering an army and broadswords? Jesus.

The few times when the movie stopped making sense (like when the first frog started talking) it was decent. The Hatter was the most boring character I have seen in a long time. Talking Scotish does not make you crazy.

Anyway at one point when Alice kept changing shape the Hatter said somethig along the lines of: "That's better, now finally you are the right size for me" while looking deeply into Alice's eyes, and the dread of this shit being turned into a love story loomed so close that my brother painfully exclaimed: "No, please!".

It was a dissapointment to say the least. If they want to know how to make a more surreal animated 3D movie they should look at Coraline. That movie got a lot of the shit right that Alice didn't.

The point of Alice in Wonderland is to show weird shit, and for you to be mesmerized by it. What Tim Burton did was make it funny, which derailed the whole story in its entirety and basically made fun of Alice in Wonderland, which is NOT OK.

I thought it was actually quite good - it dealt with the lack of any coherent plot in the original quite well, it looked stunning, and frankly the main problem I had was with the actor who played Alice. Anyone who is supposed to be 'a strong female lead' should ideally be able to convince that she is strong and passionate, rather than sounding incredibly wooden, dull, and frankly as if she would accept anything that people suggested.

I'm a fan of Tim Burton and I was surprised.

It was good. Not great, and not horrible. Avatar sure beats it up in the visuals, but the story is better. The Hatter and Chesire was awesome, and the rabbit was high so iut made me and my friend crack up. The Red queen was amazing and Tim Burton just did an overall good job.

I like Helen, and I like Johnny, but I am SO VERY F*CKING SICK of seeing them opposite each other all the time

I GET IT: they're both kinda wacked-out and 'odd', right?, problem is, they're not very interesting when they're doing the SAME DAMN THING, especially opposite each other, because then I know EXACTLY how things are going to be. Not the plot, but the general atmosphere.

Put them opposite OTHER actors and actresses, and get them to try new roles. I am very sick of this very dull formula

As a movie on its own, it was strictly ok. Once again, Burton takes too much time and and money and wastes it on Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Not saying they're bad actors, but the Burton constantly emphasized how he wanted to focus on Alice..which he kinda didn't. So without comparing it to the old Disney version, it's ok, not amazing, looked kinda cool, stupid battle ending..yeah.

But! Compared to the Disney version...it's pretty bad. I won't expound though because comparisons between two versions of a movie is kinda pointless.

If anything, I would have rather waited for DVD release instead of theaters. But hey, everyone has their own opinions!
