and go back to sleep, waiting for either the Earth to self-destruct fighting over who actually is going to represent us or the aliens being violently dispatched courtesy of the American favourite combo from the '40s to the '90s: Mr. Nuke and the Warheads.

This thread made me realise that I am ready for a zombie invasion but vastly unprepared for aliens. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE.

Zombies, you can kill with something along the lines of "Shotgun shell in face."

Aliens? Nice broad spectrum there. Fire? Makes them grow. Kniife? They spray acid blood in your face. Nukes? Energy shields. Guns? High-tech armour plating.

My plan? Get a survival kit ready and read up on how to live in the wilderness. Not much I could really do to counter a whole alien fleet.

Humanity would react the only way we know how, we would go to war. And if they can get here from wherever they are, we will almost certainly lose. As for me, I would grab my guns and my camping gear, and some friends, run over to walmart to grab whatever supplies we still need and then run off into the massive trackless forests of the Adirondacks and try our luck surviving on our own.

So, you wake up one morning and it turns out that a large alien fleet has arrived and is invading Earth. How do you think the world would react in its current state? More importantly, how would YOU react?

I'm here to answer any questions on the nature of the invasion, by the way.

Do they speak english? What are they after? Can I surrender to them? Will I be able to steal their technology? Do they have any concept of lying? What are their vulnerabilities?

1.No. They are essentially giant insects (About human height).
2.They want to get rid of humanity as it is a race that could present a problem in the future.
3. You can, but they'll probably just use you for experimentation or melt you down into your base proteins for their food reserves.
4. Probably not. It's controlled via neural uplink and wasn't designed for humans to use.
5. Well, they're a little tougher than humans, but everything that kills us should kill them eventually. However, they have a FAR higher tolerance for radiation.

Where is the fleet and can the ICBMs reach them? The biggest issue I see with the feasibility of an alien invasion is the presence of orbital support. Unless they're threatening to use viral warfare, once their ships are knocked out the ground forces would be target practice.

They have point defense, so the nukes wouldn't reach the ships. The main reason that they're engaging in a ground war is that this world is similar enough to their own that they could colonise, if it wasn't for all the armed apes.

Assuming that these aliens are advanced enough to cross the gulf between stars they are incomprehensibly advanced. Either they would enslave us, to which there is almost no point as if they were advanced enough to get here they are advanced enough to use robots and supercomputers to harvest anything of worth from this planet, or they would exterminate us.

Our best hope would be that they thought we were interesting enough to study. Then most of us would be annihilated as 90% of the planet gets carpet bombed/terraformed and the remainder would be studied in some enclaves around the planet, much like we treat the few native indigenous tribes that still exist.

I hope we are the only intelligent life out there. Or at least the MOST intelligent life out there. The other alternatives are just way too dark.

Except you haven't answered anyone's questions. Are these 'Independence Day' aliens? Reavers? 'War of the Worlds'? Are they here to enslave or destroy? Are they killing at will or saying: "Bring us to your leader."? Are they attacking from space or sending in fighters? Are they landing troops? Are they attacking major cities or the countryside, too? Are they just attacking One state, one country, or one continent at a time or the entire planet including hundreds of major cities and thousands of smaller cities ALL AT ONCE?!?

If so on that last one then I'd just start counting bullets in my pistol and make damn sure to keep one with my own name on it handy.

They have two primary missions: remove humanity or at least reduce to levels that will not be a threat (Stone Age levels or lower) and then move in. They're landing ground troops because they want this world intact, as they are compatible enough with it that they could colonise. They are essentially very large wingless wasps in powered armour with neurally controlled weapons. They're capturing areas of high strategic importance first, eg working on disabling our nuclear capabilities and communications, but are landing in most nations. Hope that helps.

Nah, the discovery channel broadcast an entire show detailing all our plans for dealing with various flavors of ET. Which is monumentally stupid, because if they detect the transmission, they'll have all our strategies.

It terrifies me that he is probably the kind of person that would be asked. Experts who are obvious acid freaks.

I still hold that if the Aliens did invade (And did not live in Atlantis which was then destroyed so they went to Egypt and built the pyramids. I LOVE THAT GUY.) we would not really have time to react. If they are capable of space travel, they are capable of annihilating us in a day. None of this "Float around and go for the major cities" stuff. If they wanted us dead all it would take is a few mass drivers, perhaps an asteroid or two, not to mention all of the clean weaponry they will probably have.

I seriously doubt they would kill the Earth's entire population in order to inhabit a planet that likely requires terraforming, not to mention the centuries of infrastructure that they likely would be incompatible with.

But what if they're go the Combine route? That is, use humanity as a slave labor, forcing us to literally terraform our own planet to suit their need. You'd spend the rest of your life in an increasingly hostile world, never knowing whether or not you'd be abducted next day, to be converted into a drone.
