Aside from that, what's wrong with encouraging a forum where posts are mature and thought out, rather than just a bunch of condescending "well i'm clearly better than you" posts.
Because "not saying things that you worry might hurt someone's feelings" =/= "mature and well thought out posting." See also: TVTropes forums.
Yeah, but mocking isn't mature. Which was my entire point.
How so? It's an excellent way to deal with a certain sort of absurdity, in which the whole "but what about the mens T.T" thing some people do definitely fits. That's why the Daily Show is popular, and was particularly popular during the Bush years. It's also, by the way, a big part [http://geekadelphia.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/1005.jpg] of why this forum is posted on in the first place.

Ok seriously this is about the fact they are leaving Vasquez, Ferro and Dietrich out of this game ifit bothers so damn much I'll just delete that part as you have nothing better to do with your time than just argue that out.

Ok, correction, when people are actually discussing it and aren't being ridiculous about it (such as questioning why it's a big deal, while some might think is a stupid question, is still just discussion) and someone turns around and mocks them, it's not exactly cool.

Quick Edit: Imagine you're sat talking to someone about politics. Someone comes in and starts going "you're teh offendedz". Don't you just want to tell them to bugger off or disregard them completely? Yeah, basically that.

I actually have to leave the computer, so I'll make this quick. In short, my only problem is that Para made a statement that read and looked like mockery on a thread that while silly, was still just discussing it. Basically, i'd rather she attempted to not be horrible about making the point.

Para, if you're reading this, that is my response to whatever post you make after this, can you try not sounding like a condescending person when you post? That was literally the only thing I wanted to point out.

Yeah, funnily enough men haven't really complained about these games. You're making females look bad, if you're going to argue against people being sexist, do it in a civil manner. I'm tired of being on the side of female gamers only to have the occasional stupid remark fuck it up for everyone else.
Oh how am I making female gamers look bad? Because I stated my opinion on the matter? I just don't see how it's fair for a legion of men to either 1 not care or find it unnecessary to include women in games or 2 take a misogynistic view on it.
I'm a female gamer as well, and I agree with dogstile. You are being childish and completely missing the point. Men don't make games centered around men because they have this primal need to exclude females from everything, like a bunch of 10 year old boys building a treehouse. They disclude women because they naturally tend to picture men doing everything. And there is nothing wrong with that. Have you ever written a story, or come up with a character, or created a character for yourself? What gender do those stories and characters tend to be centered around? Female, most likely. That's just how we work, and that's just how guys work, too.

Are there a disproportionate number of games with male leads? Yes. Does that automatically make them inherently sexist? No, because if that's your logic, any game with a female lead is sexist against men. Male lead ≠ saying women can't do the job, just as female lead ≠ saying men can't do the job.

Do I wish there were more games with strong female leads? Yes, and you know we are getting there. You can see it with how much Bioware did to make people happy with Femshep, and you can see it with how much they are trying to make Lara Croft a real character in the Tomb Raider game. But the fact of the matter is there are more men in the field than women, just as there are more men in the film industry. So there are going to be a lot more male leads than female, and there are going to be a lot more games which get females wrong. But they are acutely aware of this fact now, and the best thing we female gamers can do is to continue to let them know we're here, in a civil manner. Don't go picking fights for the wrong reasons, and know a bit about what's going on before jumping into the fray.

If you want people to address your concerns seriously, then you're going to have to present them in a way that will make you take them seriously. And you don't do that by talking about how you're going to make a female-centered game to "piss off teh menz." Lordy. We've made it this far, don't steer yourself into the way of the trolls just yet.

Also, I don't even mind male leads that much, given they are good characters. I have over 600 hours logged in TF2, and not for a moment in that game have I ever been bothered by the fact that all of the 9 classes are male characters. It's because they are good and funny characters, and the dynamic they have works perfectly. In fact, I think throwing a woman in there (like a known woman, not like the ambiguous Pyro) would only mess with that dynamic. Right now, the game sort of reads like a Saturday Morning cartoon, but with blood and swearing. The characters throw around their little comments, the Demoman shouting to the Engineer about his machines "That's a right pretty bra-washer you built, you big ugly girl!" [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/images/a/aa/Demoman_dominationengineer03.wav] I think that line is hilarious, but having an actual girl in the mix would dampen its effectiveness. So it isn't just about gender, it's about quality of characters and dynamics. If the characters aren't good, it doesn't matter if they're male or female. And no story is improved by just throwing a double X-chromosomes into the mix.

Ah, and one more thing. I do agree with you on this--there is no reason for there not to be female characters in the multiplayer of this game, especially when the franchise has a history of appealing to a female audience. But again, if you want to get taken seriously and get support, don't alienate yourself from everybody else by shouting "IT'S ALL THE MEN'S FAULT, YOU SEXIST PIGS!"

And seriously I dropped this fact already as this is completely off topic. Your opinions are yours and I have mine.

And they have female skins for tf2 and I rather find that demo man saying offensive. But again I already deleted since you all have found it so necessary to go off on tangents about it so back to the original topic of they need to put Vasquez in the game.

Have online petitions ever achieved anything?

Flood Gearbox' forums with comments. Contact them directly about it. Pester Randy Pitchford relentlessly until he gives up and tells the dev team to give you want you want. Show that you really want having female marines in mp. Show commitment and actually raise your voice. This still doesn't guarantee anything, but it's more likely to work than an online petition.
Actually, yes they have. It got us Dark Souls DLC content for consoles.

Not sure if I'll buy the game but I signed anyway. It really is an easy problem to fix.

Hmm, seems a little silly not to include a female version online, but I really don't see it as big enough a problem to get all pissy over. People will make petitions over anything now.

It isn't necessarily a bad thing, but petitioning every little thing that comes around makes people look like whiners who complain every time they don't get their way.

I'm not usually one for petitions and all that, but if there ever was an online series based entirely around female characters, good AND bad, it's Alien!

Come on Gearbox, you've been bragging about how you're staying true to the universe, so give us the opportunity to bring Vasquez or Dietrich to multiplayer!

Edit: also, about the hitbox argument... seriously?! Most of my family is military, and my non-military aunt is taller than any of my veteran uncles. Drop the stereotypes.

No disrespect to Gearbox is intended. We are just a bunch of fans, men and women, who would like to have female marines in multiplayer, especially since strong female characters are one of the main themes of the Alien series.

It's not just a theme of the series, but it is treated as a non-issue. Female marines are just part of the team rather than a special case. It is all about equality and fairness.

We fully support and respect Gearbox and their game, we are just asking that they include this feature in a game that we are so eagerly looking forward to. No playable female marines in multiplayer in this game is odd since Aliens was one of the first big budget movies that broke ground and made it normal to have female badasses in mainstream movies. Without Aliens there may not be a Laura Croft, Buffy, River Tam, or Xena.

We are not trying to be rude, we are just respectfully requesting this.

Yeah on one hand, on the other it shows that people care about about what is in a game and don't just mindlessly accept what is given to them. It keeps developers informed on what their audience want, and if they listen they earn they respect of the audience and make them likely to be repeating customers. It's win win.

Hey all, I just got a message from the author of the petition, Melissa K. She tried registering on the forum, but was having issues so she asked me to send this message for her. She writes:

"Hey Escapists!

This is MOOSH, the starter of the petition. I want to thank you for your overwhelming support for this cause. Also I want to thank shadowedge for bringing us here. I am having trouble completing my registration, but I have been keeping an eye on these forums in between all the other message boards and gaming sites we are spread out on.

I too felt the wording of the petition needed something more. I am a very assertive person, and it ended up being misconstrued by the gaming sites as me being "outraged", which is definitely not the case!

I can assure you, all of my emails to GEARBOX have been the utmost polite, and very clear that I fully support them, and that we are passionate about our beloved ALIENS universe too!

I hope you all will like the new statement on the petition page

Take care! and Thanks for all your support and Congratulations everyone!!!"

I won't be signing, not because I wouldn't mind there being female characters in multiplayer, but because I don't think the game's ever going to come out. :p

I'm a HUGE Alien and Predator fan, me and a buddy of mine have been looking forward to this game for years now, and it keeps getting pushed back. It was supposed to come out this year...now it's been pushed back to 2013. Seriously, this game hasn't yet reached Duke Nukem Forever status, but it's getting there.
