All I know is that we get a new season of Metalocalypse this month. Fuck yeah! the only really good thing on toonami anyway was Megas xlr.
Then Surrealism and absurdist humor is not for youAdmiralCheez said:Yeah, I understand the appeal of it. Perhaps my statement was a bit obtuse. I just kinda wish that their programming would handle it in a way that isn't a bunch of random nonsense strung together with a fishing line of a plot. Like, if the episode had a story (doesn't have to be original, just good) and used wacky, bizarre hijincks to further the plot, I would appreciate it. Not what it seems to be where they think up the gags first and try to write a story around that. Because it doesn't work for me.8-Bit_Jack said:See, that's always been the POINT of adult swim though, it's always been too-fucked-up-for-kids television, either through extreme content (TV Funhouse "They cut off my fucking thumb!") or general bizarre nonsense.AdmiralCheez said:I think the best way to fix the line-up issues is to drop the name of "Adult Swim" entirely, or at the very least drop the stoner crowd/frat boy target audience.
That is neither the topic of this thread, nor something that was not already covered in the thread i listed in my first post.Gatx said:Why? I mean, they could just have "Toonami" be the bumpers for the Saturday anime block.8-Bit_Jack said:So, in this thread people were discussing whether or not Toonami would return to our televisions.
I feel that it could never happen, at least not without losing some of Adult Swim's lineup.
There is a difference between surrealism, absurdism, and just nonsense. Surrealism would be like that Xavier: Renegade Angel and absurdism would be Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Both of them have a coherent plot with ridiculousness that strings them along and makes them funny. Tim and Eric lacks the structure necessary for absurdism and is too grounded for surrealism. It's just a couple of jagoffs making out and throwing up on each other. There is a tremendous difference.8-Bit_Jack said:Then Surrealism and absurdist humor is not for youAdmiralCheez said:Yeah, I understand the appeal of it. Perhaps my statement was a bit obtuse. Well yeah, but that's Tim and Eric. I didn't realize you were referring to them specifically, or else I'd have let your comment pass unchallenged.ilovemyLunchbox said:There is a difference between surrealism, absurdism, and just nonsense. I'm not the person you quoted originally, I was just throwing in my two cents. It's what I hate most about the new Adult Swim stuff. Most of it is either nonsense or just plain unfunny. I love the cuteness of absurdism. The best example would be the death island episode of ATHF.8-Bit_Jack said:Well yeah, but that's Tim and Eric. I was mostly referring to them, yeah, but some of the other shows that passed through (can't remember most of them due to intentionally blocking them out) were along the same lines. Especially the ones that intentionally went for a "zero-budget" approach and had nothing but shock humor.8-Bit_Jack said:Well yeah, but that's Tim and Eric. That CSI parody is good for one thing and one thing only: Kate Mulgrew is on it, looking even more like Katharine Hepburn than she did on Voyager. I swear, I think the two of them must be related somehow.jensenthejman said:AS can keep Venture Bros., ATHF -- which is what everyone still calls it, despite the show having a new name. Metalocalypse, Squidbillies, Delocated(the only good live action show on there.), Moral Orel, and Frankenhole and Robot Chicken.
They need to bring back Sealab, now that show was awesome. Airing a rerun here and there is just not going to cut it. Oh, and like someone mentioned Korgoth of Barbaria. Indeed, that needs to come back. A return of Home Movies would also be welcome.
They need to get rid of Tim and Eric; those guys are NOT funny. Maybe I just don't get it, but I simply can't stand them. Children's Hospital can go away. That show is just plain retarded. As are Loiter Squad and whatever that show that's supposed to be a CSI/24 parody is.
Also, Crunchyroll, which is free unless you want HD videos, and is more likely to be sub only than to have a dub at all.ilovemyLunchbox said:To everyone in this thread that just wants their anime back... Get Netflix. Netflix has a robust anime collection. The only thing it's missing from Toonami is Cowboy Bebop. Also, Japanese audio. Some animes just sound and feel better with the original audio and subtitles, but that's very, very rare on Netflix.
Does it have the original soundtrack in the Aus version?Vault101 said:Daria's one of my favorite shows (got the entire series on DVD) its actually even better eatching it as an adult because I understand the jokes...and the cultural setting at the time
Not a fan of Yu Yu Hakusho??? what??? sir!ilovemyLunchbox said:We don't miss Toonami (yes we do), we miss the kind of anime it used to play. Shit like Yu Yu Hakusho, the heavily edited Tenchi Muyo, Cowboy Bebop, etc. were all made for little boys wanting to watch something more grown up. In the middle of the day, you could watch someone get fucking shot to death on Cartoon Network... But how many still running animes are like that today? The only one I personally know of with that same kind of spirit is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and it just ended last year. But then, even if a new one did come out, how many of you would watch it at like 4 in the afternoon every day after school? For everyone who WATCHED Toonami and isn't just lying to be one of the cool kids, you've got to be like 18-25. Your days of regular TV watching are fucking over. So if one of those animes come out, you're either going to DVR it on another station or you're going to download it. Toonami won't magically bring it all back.
And as far as I'm concerned, if it isn't Robot Chicken, Venture Bros, Metalocalypse, or Aqua Teen Hunger Force, it isn't Adult Swim. The rest is just asshattery (specifically if it's live action).
hmm..unofrtunatly no, obviously copyright and all thatZachary Amaranth said:Does it have the original soundtrack in the Aus version?Vault101 said:Daria's one of my favorite shows (got the entire series on DVD) its actually even better eatching it as an adult because I understand the jokes...and the cultural setting at the time
Because it would have been really nice if they had kept the soundtrack. It had a cultural context of its own.
I have a feeling that Family Guy is gonna be like Simpsons it's just not gonna die. Toonami introduced me to Anime. I liked Gundam Wing but...G Gundam was better. Maybe they should pick up MLP. (not adult Swim but Cartoon Network I mean) But a lot of what's on Adult Swim and the Saturday run is either re-runs or shows that have been there for a few years. Yeah it needs a shake up. I think if they picked up some more anime it would help we don't see a lot except the most popular. So we only get a very narrow view of it.Ninjamedic said:I started to think about it when my father began collecting the old Hanna-Barbera cartoons, if you take each generation of western animation, there is always something of note that appeals to a general audience, but between Toonami's (and in a way Cartoon Cartoon's) cancellation and the MLP reboot, I can't come up with a good example of a cartoon series that caters to everyone while retaining a high standard.Seanfall said:Huh...I never thought of it that way....
I'd honestly get rid of Family Guy now, its had its run, let the staff go onto new programmes. We honestly need a good Anime Channel (especially in Ireland and the UK), if it wasn't for the Anime Club in my IT, I wouldn't have watched anything beyond Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop.Personally I wouldn't shed a tear if they dropped like half the shows they have now. Especially Tim and Eric I just...don't like those guys. I don't mind family guy but it wears a little thin when half the night programming is usually back to back Family Guy and American Dad. They rarely show anime now and usually only on Saturday's. At least I haven't seen any anime on during the weekdays for a loooooooong time. And then it was usually yeah Inuyasha....an anime that needs to be put to rest...with a bullet.
Copyright laws and licensing agreements vary by country and sometimes even by state and province. That's why I asked. It's the only think I miss about it.Vault101 said:hmm..unofrtunatly no, obviously copyright and all that
