Abe still is the greatest.

He's got his lips stitched up and he can still talk. Gorden Freeman can't even talk with unstitched lips.

There are several other characters who all deserved to go on the list.
I mean, how many fucking times have we seen the whole "MARIO VS LINK HURR" argument? Too many times for me to be bothered to see it all over. Gordon Freeman Vs. Mario, no matter how one-sided it may be, will be a change I'll be happy to see. I'm just going to have to hope the latter stops appearing everywhere. Nintendo makes enough games for me to be unable to go through a day without seeing his damn face all the time.

Link doesn't speak (at least in the games) but I always thought that he would be a prick if he could talk.

mario for basically inventing platforming
link for making one of the greatest snes games ever, introducing the world to open world 3d done ridicuously well, day and night with appropriate lighting in 3d and z-targetting (l-targetting now)

and both for consistently only releasing amazingly high quality games (ignoring spin offs and phantom hourglass)

Fine, slight correction. They haven't given a full sentence yet. Wind Waker Link only ever said stuff like "C'mon!" When people spoke to him, he never actually responds other than nodding and they act like he told them everything they needed to know.

Gordon and Link have some very similar basics. Personally, this "the hero is you" concept seemed somtimes almost silly in half-life², so my vote would go to Link.

there were 2 games before donkey kong that could be considered platformers
but neither of them work in any way similar to the modern platformer

I'm more partial to Valve than Nintendo, but Gordon is basically just an emotionless pawn or tool to the plot. I feel Link has much more character to warrant the "Hero" title. His adventure seems more geniune, despite the setting.

well... samus does have her logs and link says "YAAAH" "WHAAA" when you swing the sword (haha)

and in the early games (N64 Ocarina of time) he haves what could be called a conversation (in old game standards) with Zelda

and mario says MAMA MIA!
