The squad you're with during the British part of COD4. They were fairly competent and they had great personalities which made the ending really sad.
I would say Alyx, from HL2. She actually hit was what she was aiming for, stayed out of my line of fire, and was a pleasure to be around.

Morte from Planescape: Torment. He has been with you longer than you think, and has always helped you. Plus he's quite funny, and is very useful.

I had this one girl from the brotherhood in fallout 3, but she got blown away by a missile launcher five seconds into her first battle (never did find the corpse) So she can't really count.

well, i would have to say the Wolves from Too Human. they actually killed the enemy.
Also the allies from Hawx. also one of the few ai's that could kill without me holding their hand, giving them their blankies, and showing them where the thumb they want to suck is.

This. It's probably because of the amount of detail and character development valve put into HL2. Alyx is probably my favourite companion and nearly the only one I liked, if it weren't for cod4... the British S.A.S team is badassCrysisMcGee said:

The Arbiter from Halo 3 obviously simply because he is my favourite character, also can be said for Half Jaw and Cortana as side characters I liked... hell even Guilty Spark.
Also on the list is the entire Mass Effect squad, the Little Sisters and Tenenbaum from Bioshock, Carmine from Gears of War 2 and Fawkes from Fallout 3.
