Alpha, Beta, Omega -- why does the internet get this wrong?

Something I've noticed around the internet lately is a tendency to refer to guys who have no luck with women and constantly get friend zoned as "beta males," and the people who get all the chicks as "alpha males." This seems to be biologically off to me; they have alpha mostly right, but in scientific terms, the beta male is the alpha's second in command, the one who knocks sense into the alpha when no-one else can or will, and the one who steps up to the alpha position when it is either vacant or filled by an "alpha" who has proven to be inept. The loser at the bottom of the hierarchy is actually the omega male, not the beta.

Going by this definition, I am a proud beta male; I'm happy to follow someone who is truly qualified to lead, but I am also willing, ready, and able to step up to a leadership role whenever necessary. If nobody else is willing to lead, I'll do it. If the current leader is inept? I'll take over, against his protests if necessary. If he's doing a good job? I'll help him out, and make sure what needs to be done gets done. I don't, however, have some idea that I'm perfect leadership material and people must follow me; that's alpha territory, and one of the most annoying traits associated with the type.

Because of this, I find it hilarious whenever someone on the internet says they're "beta as fuck" like it's a bad thing. Those guys aren't betas; they're gammas at best, Omegas at worst. For discussion value, do you guys have any idea how the terms got confused? Also, where do you think you fall on the scale, or alternatively, why do you think the whole thing is a load of BS?

Edit: This is cast in the male sense, but it's not meant to be sexist. These terms are just used more often in a male sense than a female sense, and they tend to have slightly different connotations between the genders. I will say that the second paragraph especially should be gender neutral; take it from someone who has had a leadership role usurped by an alpha female.

I know bumps are frowned upon, but they aren't actually against the rules, and I posted this while pretty much everyone who was awake was focused on the royal wedding. If the thread doesn't get any posts after this, I'll let it die.

I've actually never heard of anything other than "alpha male" before this post. So yeah.

As for what I think now, it just seems silly to me.

My guess? They either don't know greek, or they thing it sounds cool. Or both. Anyway, I'd say I was the Beta male in my group, to an Alpha female leader. However, as there are 8 gals and 3 guys, I'm not doing bad. :D

There's not much use pondering about this too much. i guess "beta-male" is just a nickname for those who are lesser than the "alpha-male". I've never come across this term before though. Even "alpha-male" is really hard to come by.

Im a younger brother so I basically fall into this slot. Im all to willing to follow my brother into any situation as, although I hate to admit it, hes ALWAYS RIGHT! I on the other hand have a massive amount of faults, however i'll take command if I think things are going tits up.

As for the royal wedding, I cannot believe I watched that. HE BARELY EVEN KISSED HER. He shames his fellow countrymen (im English). A women that nice by his side and he *peaks* her! Come on Will stop becoming your dad, NO ONE LIKES HIM! Im starting to prefer Harry, the one who dressed up as a Storm Trooper (the bad kind).

I've only seen that on 4chan, and they are kings of asshattery, so I wouldn't worry too much about misinformation there.

Having ovaries, I don't really fall anywhere on that scale. I'm hardly alpha in any case though. Unless you count laziness, in which case, yes, I am alpha as fuck.

So: Alpha>Beta>Gamma>Omega? In that case I'd say low Beta or Even gamma. I don't play well with others, but If you can actually lead I'll do my best to help. If not, I usually jump ship or go on my own. If I think I can help, then I step up, but I honestly don't consider myself a good leader. To lazy.

I know the Greek alphabet, just not in order.

I seriously don't know why I watched the Royal wedding, i Flipped on CNN and just stuck with it. Pretty boring.

It could have something to do with the behavior of other animal species. The Alpha Wolves (male and female) of the pack, for example, are the only ones allowed to breed in most cases. Occasionally the Beta male with breed the Alpha female if the Alpha male doesn't get around to it but 9 times out of 10 its alpha to alpha.

Why do I feel like this thread was inspired by the movie Alpha & Omega?
My first thought was The Omega Man.
Well, The Omega Man was about radioactive zombies if I remember correctly.

Alpha & Omega were about an Alpha and Omega wolves, and the female Alpha and male Omega eventually end up doing it, but the idea is still there.

Time for a lesson in internet terminology.

Alpha = Domineering badass. Emotionally unavailable but sexually exciting. Most success derived from one-night-stands, occasionally gets into turbulent and short-lived relationships.
Beta = Simpering niceguy. Emotionally sensitive and open but sexually under-stimulating. Most commonly friendzoned and used as a dumping ground for everyone else's problems, but occasionally gets into short-lived relationship and 99% of the time drives the female in question crazy with his neediness and perceived lack of self-esteem/ambition.
Gamma = Happy medium between Alpha and Beta that plays both sides of the field whenever appropriate. Relationship material, very well-rounded.
Omega = No redeeming qualities. Avoid.

See, that's my point; it's completely wrong, from a biological standpoint. My real question is how we got from what I described to what you described.

Edit: Although I guess that would make me a Gamma who has recently emerged from being a Beta, under the internet definition. There's more to it than just sexual attraction, though :/

Well using this I will still go with Omega
