Why would you take melee but not toughness? The two pretty much go hand in hand since you're going to be running up to a lot of people with guns and kneeing them in the face.

WHAT IS WITH PEOPLE SAYING IT'S NOT WORTH IT AT $2.

IT'S TWO BLOODY DOLLARS! There is no concievable situation you could be in where you are able to use the internet, and yet consider spending two dollars on a AAA title not worth your money.
I hate shooters. Sell it to me now. :p
It's not a shooter. You can play through the entire game without firing a single bullet.

It's a stealth game RPG, basically what you'd get if you took Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, added RPG mechanics and the most amazing dialogue system gaming has ever come up with.

OT: Agreed with the OP. The price is ridiculously low and it's one of the most amazing games you'll ever play if you enjoy dialogue in games (seriously, it's something quite new and amazingly done) and the other bits are pretty awesome as well. Sadly, it's indeed a bit rough around the edges and the mini games can get annoying due to their difficulty curve (but they're all doable and you've got EMP bombs to bypass most/all of them if you want).

I've posted the same thing on my Facebook profile the moment I saw it. Hell, I'm actually thinking of buying some 5 copies and sending them to my friends in case they're too stupid to buy it for themselves. I mean it's a 90% discount for God's sake and the game's a triple A title with some minor issues blown out of proportion by incompetent reviewers (who might've been playing the console version, cause I haven't encountered any of the crap they bitched about barring the minigames)

I'm fairly sure I bought a lot of toughness points eventually but in hard it didn't change much. I still died in a few shots.

Lesson here is, do not play this game in hard because all it does is highlight the flawed design and the bugs.

Yeah it's definitely better to play on easy and experience the story and dialog sections, which are Alpha Protocol's biggest strength.

Err.... how about no? its a turgid pile of crap that I have no intention of buying.

Just because you like it doesnt mean everyone else should.

I intend on getting it before the sale is over. I've spent more on games that I basically just bought to have just in case I get the whim to play them. As flawed as it probably is, I'm thinking I can at least get $2 worth of enjoyment out of it.

It's £1.50 in the UK. For that price I don't care if it isn't better than Deus ex or has alot of problems, there's no way that I'll be disappointed with it having payed £1.50 for it.

Buying now.

I bought it. I'll give it a spin after I finish Final Fantasy VII. I was always curious about it, and... I mean, c'mon. Two dollars.

It's worth full price. Fantastic game. Flawed? Yes. But it shines in a couple of big areas: choice (both in how you play and the decisions you make) and consequence. The fighting is good, you just need to make sure you know what the hell you're doing. I saw someone trying to review the game once by showing a minute of footage of him trying to rapid fire with the pistol at medium range. If you're using the pistol, keep the crosshairs on the target for just a few seconds. Fire, and enjoy the satisfaction of a clean and quiet kill.

Most underrated game in years.
agreed, every time i see someone trashing on the gameplay ,it's because they are running in like a cod tard going "HERP DERP SHOOT AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE WHILE RUNNING!" instead of trying to play it like an rpg -_-

and personally i found the boss battles awesome.

russian 80's fanatic? yes please.

they were at least semi creative in that aspect, since so many people are calling it a "deus ex rip off", even tho it plays 10x better and the characters/story are 10x better than the original DE
I don't think the characters are so deep. I don't want to oversell it there. There's really not a place for most of them to be deep, so they are instead more interesting "caricatures" (I guess that's the best word to use). Think of the ensemble in any spy or heist movie. You usually mostly have a bunch of quirky people. That's Stephen Heck, Albatross, and the rest.

But I agree on the Russian boss. Seriously, people. How can an 80's obsessed Russian who gains strength by snorting coke not sell you on the game.
oh i wouldn't call them deep either, the story moves along like a freight train so it's hard for them to be really deep, i was going for like what you said (you gave it a better word choice) better "caricatures".

Alpha Protocol is a great game, it's just also a typical Obsidian game. Meaning it's buggy and the camera sometimes has torettes. This is less of a problem on PC, so this Steam sale is a fantastic way for new people to get into the game.

BUY IT. Seriously, while playing DE3 I was wishing they took the dialogue and moral choice guys from ALpha Protocol and used them because that system in a non-buggy game like DE3 would have just about made me forget the Boss battles.

For all the people who hate it, there are at least as many people who love this game. It's not a perfect game by a long way, there are some issues with the dialogue, the boss battles are a little obnoxious if you're not specifically combat classed and yes, some builds of character far outstrip others in usefulness. However, this is one of the few games where I've seen 'moral choice' implemented WELL.

By this, I mean that there isn't a sliding scale of arbitrary right/wrong judgements that make you into a saint or a jerkass... The game makes you care about it's world, it's characters and it's background, then gives you seconds to make important decisions. Save a well-loved president and ensure the political safety of a country or stop some planned riots to save a lot of citizens but plunge the country into civil unrest? Save the girl that the bad guys kidnapped (from your safehouse that you suggested she stay at to be safe, irony) or defuse some bombs? Make friends with the obviously untrustworthy underground secret society so they can help you later, or make enemies with them so you know for definite which side they're on?

For the record, I seriously enjoyed this game because of all the little things like that. I found the plot to be a little Bames Jond in places but it never became impossible to follow. The only real problem is that playing it again you know who all the players are, all the secret agendas of certain characters, etc which kind of makes the game easier to play :(

Despite the game being very flawed in important areas, like combat, any PC gamer who thinks he can afford to have an opinion on RPGs should have played this game, now that it sells for that kind of change.

AP of all games sofar, has come the closest to this crazy ideal of an interactive story with meaningful consequences in CRPGs.
It's an impossible goal, but I can understand why such a promise may appeal the big story crowd here.

Anyway, this is a game that could have been absolutely stellar with a little more time, effort and common sense with the designers.

It's a great game, totally recommend it. I'd buy it if I hadn't already bought it new for $20 back in May or June on my 360.

Alpha Protocol is a very good game, but it is not without flaws. Most of the egregious bugs have been cleaned up by this point. As usual, Obsidian did a lot of really good things, and as usual, bugs and rough edges took a lot of shine off of what was otherwise a pretty damn solid title. It was a steal at $7 last year during the sale. At $2 it seems to be something of a no brainer for those who enjoy this sort of game.

Well...the last 5 or so bottles of coke I've bought have been flatter than a pancake...so buying coke is not risk free

I've gone over to Pepsi tbh. I also bought Alpha Protocol. 2?...I could probably make more money if I cleaned my couch.
Nothing is risk free, and it's not a matter of the money. I made more than $2 in the time it took me to read your post. It's a matter of calculating the risk. I know Valve is second only to Blizzard in the legions of blindly trusting fans, but I'm not one of them. There is already precedent for people being locked out of access to the games they bought legally, and Valve never seems to opt to make the standalone downloads available to them (imagine that!).

OTOH, I think I may pick up a bunch of those D&D games on GOG this weekend. Digital Downloads are fine when they're DRM free.

Definitely a flawed game but I enjoyed it. I've heard nothing but praise about the choice system and the consequences of your choices in this thread but I've yet to see a mention of my pet hate with the conversation system - the fact that it uses quick time events. I missed the choice a few times during play as I didn't have enough time to make up my mind and the game decided to speak professionally on my behalf.

I'd also like to take the opportunity to say fuck that hacking minigame.

I was disappointed to hear that Obsidian wouldn't be getting to make a sequel as it would be interesting to see if they could take their concept and polish it up a little. As it is £1.50/$2 it is certainly worth a look at.

Thanks for the heads up op, just got this and AvP 2010 for less than £5. Seriously, if I only get half an hour of fun shooting aliens out of that I'm all good.
