Am I a gamer anymore?

I'm not going to be buying GTA4. I've played the game 3 other times on the same line of consoles and even longer before that on the PC. GTA is just a single player MMO. It's odd, though, as all the people who usually criticize MMO's shoot semen out of their ears over the GTA series.

Dude, I'm definitely not ever going to buy GTA IV (screw those games, the most overhyped crap, even worse than Halo) and I KNOW I'm a gamer. So don't worry about it man.

Left out of the discussion in the other thread, the remainder of the forum bitches and moans... You all know that the GTA series was going to be overhyped and that it was going to get fantastic reviews. Having seen the game in action (my friend got an early copy because he knows people in a game store,) I can say that it has been overhyped. But that still doesn't stop it from being one of the best games I've ever seen, probably the best game since Half-Life 2.

Relatively speaking, it's not been hyped more than Halo 3, because it delivers a hell of a lot more than Halo 3 did (still a good game, but still exactly the same gameplay as the first two with practically no innovation).

To get back to the point, not buying GTA4 is a tough decision but doing it doesn't stop you from being a gamer. It's just crazy :D

Had you excluded the "not", I would've considered you an absolute drooling moron.
*sigh* I guess people can't like what they like then? Everyone has to like what you do or they are morons, eh?

God damn, you think you're not a gamer because you don't think you will not be buying GTA IV? Then I must be the encarnation of the word heresy because not only have I never liked the GTA games (at least the 3D ones) but I also dislike FPS's and sports games in general (there are VERY few exeptions). Relax man, let the hype cool down and then give it a try (if you really must play it). And liking or not liking a game that is supposed to be very popular does not make you more or less a gamer than you already are.

Out my eyeballs, not my nose... And I'm not talkin tears, but super-soaker watergun blasts...

But about GTA being an MMO... Not true in the slightest. You do run missions in GTA games, but just because they aren't an entirely linear progression doesn't mean its MMO-like. There is no grind... Hell, there is no level system at all.
It's a single player MMO. You don't need a level system to have it be an MMO. Missions are quests. You have to grind the quests in order to access new areas/vehicles/weapons. You have to grind in order to be able to buy new weapons (some of the time). You have health and armor. You have stats which can be raised through grinding. You form in-game relationships with characters.

Sounds like a single player MMO to me.

Many people have served up a heaping plate of warm reassurance here but why not, let's add to the pile-on.

So you've got your priorities straight. There's nothing wrong with that. People have mentioned the silliness of prereq games before, but you don't have some kind of quota to be a gamer. There's adjectives for that - casual, hardcore, and the like, but you're always going to be a gamer as long as you play games fairly regularly and as a hobby.

You're also selective about what games you play. Nothing wrong with that either. I like GTA, but it isn't enough for me to buy a PS3. I used to buy all the popular games under the sun, but now because I'm a bit more practical and have other needs, I get very specific with what I want to buy. My wallet is happier for it and I don't have to turn in my "gamer card" at the door.

There's nothing wrong with playing the games you want to play, when you want to play them.

Meh; I'm strapped for cash and are in the midst of exam time as it is right now. I won't be buying any game for at least another few weeks.

Good for you. Get that journalism degree.

Re: Am I a gamer anymore? You're fine. [I want to say "You don't quit it, it quits you (when you die, your hands fall off, or something equally drastic changes)".] If you were swearing off all games forever, a) good luck with that, and b) maybe, maybe then you'd not be a gamer anymore. You're not doing that. You're just taking a vacation from being an avid gamer for while. A year or two of not playing this particular game seems like a long time to some, but it's a drop in the bucket of your both your whole life and your gaming life.

We don't call it quitting movies when you don't go to see the thing on the first weekend. You'll see it on DVD, or some other way, at your convenience, in the future. With a diploma on your wall. That degree will get you the job that will, among other things, subsidize your gaming habit.

I hate the GTA series and would rather gouge my eyes out than spend a huge gob of money of that stupid overhyped and mediocre game series. But that's just me, so I can't really relate on that note.

And for the record, I went about 3 months without picking up a game due to massive amounts of schoolwork, but then picked it back up again. I still considered myself a gamer, because I still quoted Portal, I still got my Game Informer and had Zero Punctuation to fall back on when I was bored. :O
Dear god u what nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo thats a shame i really think that GTA IV is going to be awesome/right on to topic/just because you miss out one big thing dosent kill your gaming status it dosent do anything to it there are other people who miss out on them but they still are gamers

Hmm, I expected this thread to be more serious, surely no one would actually think that in order to love games you must jump the bandwagon and also buy the most hyped up and anticipated game of the year.
