My university is made me read this book about some guy who built schools in the middle east, and they are making me go to these lecture/seminar things about third world countries and children my age that live there and their hardships etc. I just got back from one, and i feel like i wasted an hour and a half of my life. I honestly don't care. I care about me and the people directly around me, not someone i have never met halfway around the world. So i ask you fellow escapists, am i a total heartless douche for not caring?

Well there's a difference between not caring and not helping. Personally, I care, even if I can't really offer my help. It sucks that people are in situations like that, and it's much, much worse when you consider the amount of sex slavery and such going on in those situations. I don't understand how you could just not give a crap about that. Though I suppose the predominant worldview now is that we're all just animals with random, pointless origins, and we may as well only care about our own well-being and enjoyment because human life has no value anyway.

Not really. It just means you're jaded. Personally, I stopped giving a crap about the third world sometime around the age of 10 when I realised that there is almost nothing we can do to help those shitholes.
I'd much prefer it if we stayed the hell away from the majority of those places and focussed on our own countries. We spend a ridiculous amount of money on foreign aid, yet we still have people that are homeless, uneducated, living in poverty or a combination of all three. In a first world country! So fuck the third world, fuck the middle east, fuck them all. I'd much prefer my tax dollars went to fixing up my own country first, rather than having the government pop up in the news saying how we're in debt, so we're going to increase foreign aid.
